Photo Courtesy of Scott Du TIGER BOYS REPEAT AS STATE CHAMPIONS! For the second consecutive year, the Tiger boys reign as the PIAA Class AAA Champions. NA scored 227.5 points to runnerup Wilson's 192 to repeat as state champions. Senior Jon Buerger won his second individual gold medal and third overall with a victory in the 500 freestyle. For his efforts, Jon was named as the Outstanding Swimmer of the meet. Jon also swam as the anchor on the silver medal winning 400 free relay team along with senior Mark Waugh, senior Sean Battle, and sophomore Matthew Buerger.
Junior Connor Kuremsky won the diving title for the third straight year to add valuable points to the NA team total. Kuremsky scored 543.855 points in winning the title to break the state record set by Steve Bohner of North Penn in 1998. The Tigers got additional team points on Day 2 from Matthew Buerger who finished seventh in the 100 backstroke, senior Jonathan Du who took 10th in the 100 breaststroke, Battle who was 13th in the 100 free, and senior Jake Scherer who finished 13th in the 500 free. The Lady Tigers finished in 5th place but were the top team from the WPIAL in the team standings. Wilson won the title followed by Hershey, Parkland and Emmaus. Senior Kylie Grady had the top individual finish for NA with a 4th in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Allie Pennetti took a 12th in the 100 free. The 400 free relay team of freshman Katya Borisov, senior Courtney Thompson, junior Corinne Talhouk, and sophomore Kally Vanderbilt won the consolation final to finish in 9th place overall. NA leads second-place Wilson, 127-111.5 with Emmaus just behind at 111. Senior Jon Buerger won the 200 freestyle race along with leading the 200 free relay to gold along with senior Sean Battle, senior Jon Du and junior Kostya Borisov. Sophomore Matt Buerger took the silver medal in the boys' 200 IM along with leading off the bronze medal winning 200 medley relay team along with Du, Borisov and senior Mark Waugh. Waugh also placed 8th in the 100 fly. The Lady Tigers are in fourth place behind Wilson, Hershey and Parkland. Both NA relay teams finished in third place in their respective races. In the 200 medley, junior Corinne Talhouk, senior Kylie Grady, senior Courtney Thompson and sophomore Allie Pennetti helped NA to win the bronze. In the 200 free relay, it was the team of freshman Katya Borisov, Pennetti, junior Marina Rozick, and sophomore Kally Vanderbilt taking third. Vanderbilt also earned a 7th place finish in the 200 free with Pennetti taking 9th in the 50 free. The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) will telecast the meet on a delayed basis according to the following schedule: Friday, March 19 Saturday, March 20 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS TAKE WPIAL TITLES Both Tiger teams were victorious at the WPIAL Class AAA Swimming Championships on Friday at Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. The girls scored 440 points to second place Latrobe's 226. The boys also dominated the meet with 400 points to finish well ahead of second place Upper St. Clair's 230.5. The boys won the title for the fifth consecutive year!

Winning gold for the Lady Tigers were senior Kylie Grady in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 relay team. Sophomore Allie Pennetti was second in the 100 free, sophomore Kally Vanderbilt took silver in the 500 free, and senior Kasey Manko captured second in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Corinne Talhouk added fourth place points in the 100 backstroke. Freshman Katya Borisov, senior Stephanie Graham, senior Courtney Thompson and Vanderbilt made up the winning relay team. Taking first place medals for the boys were senior Jon Buerger in the 500 free along with the 400 free relay team. All NA relay teams both boys and girls won their races. Senior Sean Battle won silver in the 100 free as did senior Jonathan Du in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Matthew Buerger was third in the 100 backstroke and senior Jacob Scherer finished fifth in the 500 free. Senior Mark Waugh, Battle, and the Buerger brothers made up the winning relay team. Next up for the WPIAL champions will the PIAA Championships to be held at Bucknell University. Both Tiger teams dominated the competition on Day One of the WPIAL Class AAA Championships on Thursday at Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. The Lady Tigers scored 252 points to runnerup Latrobe's 132. Sophomore Kally Vanderbilt won the 200 free while sophomore Allie Pennetti captured the 50 free gold. Both relay teams won their events in WPIAL record time. In the medley relay, it was junior Corinne Talhouk, senior Kylie Grady, senior Courtney Thompson and Pennetti posting a time of 1:46.05 to set the record. In the 200 free relay, freshman Katya Borisov, Pennetti, junior Marina Rozick, and Vanderbilt who set the new record of 1:36.46. In the 100 fly, Thompson was second with senior Stephanie Graham taking the bronze. Junior Caroline Schweers captured third place in the 200 freestyle with Talhouk finishing third in the 200 IM. The boys' team recorded a total of 200 points to 126 for second place Upper St. Clair. Senior Sean Battle won the 200 free with senior Jon Buerger just behind in second place. In the 200 IM, sophomore Matthew Buerger captured the silver with senior Mark Waugh coming in third in the 100 fly and rourth in the 200 IM. Junior Kostya Borisov finished in fifth place in the 50 freestyle event. The boys' 200 medley relay team of Matthew Buerger, senior Jonathan Du, Waugh and Borisov won gold with a new WPIAL record of 1:34.97. The 200 free relay squad of Jon Buerger, Battle, Du and Borisov also captured first place for the Tigers. The second day of competition will begin this morning at 10:00 am. Finals are scheduled in: 100 free, 500 free, 100 back, 100 breast, and 400 free relay. KUREMSKY CAPTURES THIRD
Junior Connor Kuremsky won his third straight WPIAL Class AAA diving title and broke his own record from last year in the WPIAL Championships at Pine-Richland High School on Saturday. Freshman Christian Wrigley finished in 8th place for NA. Junior Anita Sewald advanced to the semifinals against a strong field in the girls' championships and finished in 20th place. Kuremsky will try to win his third consecutive PIAA title at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University on March 18. The Tiger swim teams will battle to repeat as WPIAL Championships at Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh next Thursday and Friday.

TIGER TEAMS DUMP NORTH HILLS Both Tiger teams won section championships on Thursday night with victories at North Hills. The boys downed the Indians, 97-62, while the Lady Tigers were victorious by a 91-71 score. The boys set a pair of pool records with senior Jon Buerger in the 200 freestyle and in the boys' freestyle relay. The Tiger boys wn 8 of 11 events in downing the Indians led by Jon Buerger and sophomore brother Matthew who won the 200 IM. Senior Mark Waugh won the 100 free, senior Jake Scherer the 500 free, junior Kostya Borsov the 100 back, and junior Aaron Li the 100 fly. Both the medley and 200 free relay teams won their races. For the 200 medley, it was sophomore Johnny Songer, Li, sophomore Evan Staresinic, and sophomore Daniel Becker swimming for the win. In the 200 free race, the team was made up of Jon Buerger, freshman Steven Siclari, Waugh, and freshman Rob Clinger. Picking up second place points for the winning Tigers were senior Sean Battle in the 100 fly, Jon Buerger in the 100 back, senior Matt Reid in the 50 free, and Staresinic in the 200 IM. Third-place finishes were recorded by Scherer in the 200 IM, sophomore Jacob Plichta in the 200 free, Becker in the 100 fly, Songer in the 500 free, and freshman Ben Michaels in the 100 back. For the Lady Tigers, senior Courtney Thompson won the 200 free, senior Kylie Grady the 200 IM, senior Corinne Talhouk the 100 fly, junior Caroline Schweers the 500 free, and freshman Katya Borisov the 50 free as NA captured 7 of 11 swimming events including sweeps in the 200 IM and the 500 free. Finishing in second place were junior Adelee Choban in the 200 free, sophomore Allie Pennetti in the 500 free, sophomore Erin Bishop in the 200 IM, and sophomore Natalie Vanderzee in the 100 fly. Taking third place points were junior Marina Rozick in the 100 fly, junior Rachel Lewis in the 500 free, sophomore Dana Scherer in the 200 IM, sophomore Kally Vanderbilt in the 50 free, and freshman Anna Seethaler in the 100 free. Two relay teams won their races led by Vanderzee, senior Kasey Manko, senior Stephanie Graham, and junior Leah Garcia teamed up to win the 200 medley relay. In the 200 free relay, freshman Arielle Krigger, Garcia, Bishop and Graham beat North Hills to the finish line. In addition, the girls have now qualified 23 of 23 girls for the WPIAL championships, a first for our girls' team. The boys achieved that distinction last season for the first time when every boy on the team secured a WPIAL cut. Both teams finished the season with section marks of 6-0 and the section titles. The overall records improved to 9-0 on the season. Next up for the Tigers will be the WPIAL Diving and Swimming Championships coming in a few weeks time. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS TOO MUCH FOR SENECA VALLEY Both Tiger teams swam to easy victories over Seneca Valley on Monday night at the Senior High pool. On Senior Night, the boys captured a 100-74 win over the visiting Raiders while the Lady Tigers were victorious by a 110-74 count. With the wins, both NA teams improved to 5-0 in section, 8-0 overall. The Tiger teams will close out the regular season with a trip to rival North Hills on Thursday night. Meet time is set for 6:00 pm as the regular season concludes. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOX CHAPEL NO MATCH FOR TIGER TEAMS Both Tiger teams posted easy section victories at Fox Chapel on Thursday night. The boys captured a 127-52 victory over the Foxes to remain unbeaten in both section and overall records. The Lady Tigers matched the boys' unbeaten record with a 130-68 win over Fox Chapel. With the wins, both NA teams are now 4-0 in section, 7-0 overall on the season. The Tiger teams will host Seneca Valley on Thursday night at the Senior High pool with competition scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm. (NOTE: We will post individual results when they are available!) * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS TOP BUTLER IN SECTION ACTION Both Tiger teams recorded section victories on Thursday night against Butler at the Senior High pool. The boys downed the Tornado, 96-78, to improve to 3-0 in section, 6-0 overall. The Lady Tigers kept pace with a 109-69 rout of Butler to also move to 3-0 and 6-0. The boys won eight of 12 events sweeping the 200 and 100 freestyle races. Finishing first for NA were senior Jake Scherer in the 100 free, junior Kostya Borisov in the 200 free, junior Michael Magdic in the 50 free, junior Connor Kuremsky in diving, sophomore Daniel Becker in the 100 fly and freshman Rob Clinger in the 500 free. The 200 medley relay team of seniors Jon Buerger, Jonathan Du, Mark Waugh, and Sean Battle won their event as did the 200 free relay squad of Waugh, junior Aaron Li, Scherer, and Clinger. The girls were even more dominant that the boys in winning 8 of twelve events including sweeps in the 200 medley relay, 200 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 100 free and 500 free races. First place winners for the Lady Tigers included junior Leah Garcia in the 200 free, junior Marina Rozick in the 100 free, junior Corinne Talhouk in the 500 free, sophomore Allie Pennetti in the 100 fly, freshman Katya Borisov in the 200 IM, and freshman Arielle Krigger in the 50 free. NA won the 200 medley relay with the all-senior team of Kasey Manko, Kylie Grady, Courtney Thompson, and Stephanie Graham. The 200 free relay team was also victorious and featured Korisov, Krigger, sophomore Veronica Cwalina and Garcia. The starting time is scheduled for 6:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS SINK FRANKLIN REGIONAL Both the boys and girls' teams remained unbeaten with wins at Franklin Regional on Tuesday night. The Lady Tigers fell behind early by a 45-33 score but came roaring back with a one-two finish in the butterfly with seniors Stephanie Graham and Courtney Thompson sparking the comeback as NA won by a 104-82 count. A victory by junior Corinne Talhouk in the 100 backstroke and another by senior Kasey Manko in the 100 breaststroke sealed the victory. The Lady Tigers won nine of twelve events on their way to the victory. In addition to the winners listed above, Thompson was first in the 200 free, sophomore Allie Pennetti in the 200 IM, and freshman Katya Borisov in the 500 free. NA won all three relays. In the 200 medley, it was the team of Talhouk, Manko, Graham and sophomore Kally Vanderbilt taking first. The 200 free relay team was comprised of junior Marina Rozick, Manko, Pennetti and Vanderbilt while Borisov, Thompson, Pennetti and Graham made up the winning 400 free team. Thompson took second in the 100 fly while Pennetti was second in the 100 free. TIGER TEAMS CAPTURE TITLES AT
The boys and girls swimming teams racked up impressive victories in Wilkes Barre over the weekend at the annual All American Invitational. Both teams defeated District 3 Hempfield by identical 297 point margins as the Tigers dominated the competition. Senior Jon Buerger led the way for the boys with two pool records in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Buerger also anchored the record setting 400 free relay which also included senior Sean Battle, senior Mark Waugh and sophomore Matthew Buerger. Waugh set a pool record in the 100 fly and was also victorious in the 200 IM. Battle won the 100 freestyle, senior Jon Du the 100 breaststroke and Matthew Buerger rounded out the gold medal take by winning the 100 backstroke. The girls' team was led by the strength of the relays as the Tiger women swept all three relay events with first and second place finishes in all three. Senior Kasey Manko was victorious in the 100 breaststroke, senior Stephanie Graham won the 100 butterfly and sophomore Allie Pennetti told gold in the 50 freestyle event. The Tiger teams will be back in action tonight when they travel to Franklin Regional for a 5:00 pm non-section meet. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PINE-RICHLAND TEAMS FALL TO TIGERS The Tiger teams took a pair of section wins at the Pine-Richland pool on Tuesday night. The Lady Tigers downed the Rams, 108.5-77.5, while the boys continued to roll with a 109-72 victory. The Lady Tigers took seven of the eleven races with four different swimmers and the three relay teams victorious. Leading the was were senior Stephanie Graham in the 100 fly, senior Kasey Manko in the 100 free, junior Leah Garcia in the 50 free and freshman Katya Borisov in the 100 back. NA depth provided six second place finishes. Senior Courtney Thompson took second in the 200 IM, senior Kylie Grady in the 100 free, Graham in the 100 back, junior Corinne Talhouk in the 50 free, Borisov in the 200 free, and freshman Anna Seethaler in the 100 back. Earning third place points were junior Adelee Choban in the 500 free, sophomore Dana Scherer in the 200 IM, and freshman Gabrielle Borza in the 100 breaststroke. All three relay teams won their races. In the 200 medley, it was the team of Talhouk, Grady, Thompson and sophomore Allie Pennetti taking first place and setting a pool record. The 200 free relay team was comprise of Manko, junior Marina Rozick, Graham and sophomore Kally Vanderbilt. In the 400 free, Rozick, Talhouk, Borisov and Vanderbilt teamed up for the win. Both teams improved to 2-0 in section, 4-0 overall with the wins. The Tiger teams will be on the road this weekend when they travel to the All-American Invitational meet at the Wyoming Valley Youth Center in eastern Pennsylvania. Leading the way for the boys was sophomore Matthew Buerger who won both the 200 and 500 free races as the Tigers took 7 of 11 events. Also finishing first were junior Aaron Li in the 50 free, junior Kostya Borisov in the 100 back and sophomore Daniel Becker in the 200 IM. The 200 medley relay team of seniors Jonathan Buerger, Jon Du, Mark Waugh, and Sean Battle won their race as did the 200 free relay team of Jon Buerger, senior Matt Reid, Matthew Buerger, and junior Connor Kuremsky. END BETHEL PARK UNBEATEN The defending WPIAL Champion Lady Tigers defeated Bethel Park, 101-79, at the Senior High pool on Tuesday night. The win improved the NA non-section record to 2-0 and handed Bethel Park their first loss since 2003, also at the hands of NA. The Tiger boys remained unbeaten also with a 106-78 victory over the Blackhawks to go to 2-0 on the season. Sophomore Kally Vanderbilt won the 500 free, junior Corinne Talhouk the 100 backstroke, senior Stephanie Graham the 200 IM, junior Anita Sewald captured the diving, and senior Courtney Thompson the 100 butterfly to pace NA. For the boys, senior Mark Waugh won both the 200 free and 100 back while senior Jonathan Buerger captured both the 200 IM and 100 fly. Also winning for NA were senior Sean Battle in the 50 free, junior Connor Kuremsky in diving, junior Kostya Borisov in the 100 free, and sophomore Johnny Songer in the 500 free. Meet time today is scheduled for 1:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS DOWN LEBO IN SEASON OPENERS The top-ranked Tiger boys captured a 50-43 victory at Mt. Lebanon on Tuesday night led by senior Jon Buerger who set pool records in both the 200 and 500 freestyle. The NA 200 medley and 400 free relay teams also broke pool records. The defending WPIAL champion Lady Tigers also got off to an impressive start with a 57-36 victory over the Blue Devils. NA was led by sophomore Kally Vanderbilt who won both the 50 and 100 freestyle races. In the boys' meet, senior Mark Waugh won the 100 fly, senior Jon Du the 100 breaststroke and sophomore Matthew Buerger the 100 backstroke. The 200 medley relay team that set a pool record was comprised on Matthew Buerger, junior Aaron Li, Du, and junior Kostya Borisov. For the Lady Tigers, senior Kylie Grady won the 200 IM, sophomore Natalie Vanderzee the 100 fly, and sophomore Veronica Cwalina the 100 breaststroke. The 200 medley relay team of junior Corinne Talhouk, senior Courtney Thompson, Grady, and junior Leah Garcia won their race. The 200 free relay team was also victorious with senior Stephanie Graham, Garcia, freshman Arielle Krigger, and Vanderzee swimming. With second place finishes were Talhouk in the 200 free, senior Kasey Manko in the 50 free, sophomore Erin Bishop in the 200 IM, sophomore Dana Scherer in the 500 free and freshman Anna Seethaler in the 100 back. Both the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams were also in second. Picking up third place points were junior Adelee Choban in both the 200 and 500 free, junior Marina Rozick in the 100 free, and sophomore Kelsey Smith in the 100 breaststroke. With the wins, both teams started the dual meet season with 1-0 records. Next up for the Tiger teams will be Bethel Park on Tuesday, January 5, with the starting time set for 5:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

CAPTURE TITLES IN Both Tiger teams were victorious in the IUP Kickoff Classic at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Monday afternoon. The boys scored 96 points to second place Franklin Regional's 84 to take first place while the girls totaled 102 to Latrobe's 75 to capture the title in the girls' division. The combined total of 235 gave NA the combined team championship as well. Eleven teams competed in the event. The Tiger teams will travel to Mt. Lebanon next Tuesday to meet the Blue Devils in a non-section meet. The starting time is set for 6:30 pm.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * GIRLS FIRST, BOYS THIRD AT STATE COLLEGE QUAD INVITATIONAL The Lady Tigers took first place while the boys finished in third in the State College Quad Invitational at State College High School on Saturday. The girls' squad used overall team depth to score 383 points to edge host State College's 375 with a strong Emmaus team finishing in third place. The NA boys had several key members swimming at a Junior National competition in Columbus, Ohio, but still managed 282 points to finish in third behind Emmaus and State College. The Lady Tigers won just two races with senior Kasey Manko capturing the 100 breaststroke while the 200 free relay team also won their race. Swimming in the winning relay were sophomore Erin Bishop, senior Stephanie Graham, junior Leah Garcia, and sophomore Kally Vanderbilt. Graham finished in second in the 100 fly. Junior Corinne Talhouk took bronze in the 200 IM while sophomore Allie Pennetti was third in the 50 and 100 free. Vanderbilt also added a pair of third place finishes in the 200 and 500 free. The NA 400 free relay team was also third. The boys did not take a first place, but junior Kostya Borisov was second in the 100 backstroke. Taking third for NA were senior Sean Battle in both the 200 and 500 free, sophomore Evan Staresinic in the 100 breaststroke, and both the 200 and 400 free relay teams.

THREE SWIMMERS SIGN
NATIONAL Three North Allegheny swimmers signed National Letters of Intent to swim for colleges in the early signing period last month. Senior Co-Captains, Jonathan Buerger and Mark Waugh will be swimming for Division I schools. Senior Stephanie Graham signed a letter of intent to swim and play water polo for Division II Gannon University in the PSAC Conference. Jonathan Buerger Jon Buerger will be swimming for the Atlantic Coast Conference University of Virginia Cavaliers. Where he plans to pursue pre-med with a major in math or chemistry. Buerger is ranked number 2 in Pennsylvania and 38th in the country overall by College Swimming. Buerger chose Virginia because it was one of the top academic and swimming schools. "Jonathan was UVa's first verbal commitment. He is a talented swimmer who covers a wide range of distances in the freestyle events in an excellent manner. He has also exhibited talent in the 400 IM and this is an event we are looking to improve depth-wise in the coming season. He is an excellent student,a strong leader and a young man of great character and integrity. He has a strong work ethic and fits the UVa mold of middle and distance free swimmers. The best is yet to come for Jonathan and we look for him to to challenge our swimmers right away. " Best to you and your family for happy holidays. Mark Bernardino, Head Coach, Men's Swimming and Diving, University of Virginia Mark Waugh Mark Waugh will be swimming for the University of Missouri Tigers in the Big 12 Conference and will study computer science. Mizzou’s Head Coach, Brian Hoffer, said "we feel like [Mark] has the ability to do some damage at the championship level and can't wait to have the opportunity to coach him". Waugh is ranked number 3 in Pennsylvania and is currently 91st overall according to College Swimming. Both Waugh and Buerger were recruited by numerous Division I colleges since the recruiting period began on July 1. They both made multiple visits to schools across the country. Stephanie Graham Stephanie plans to study special/elementary education. Graham is ranked 19th in Pennsylvania by College Swimming. “The Women's

sought after recruit and an instant impact to her new TEAM! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WPIAL SWIMMING AND DIVING - 2009-10 The Tigers teams will compete again in the WPIAL in Class AAA 31 other teams. The WPIAL boys/girls are scheduled to begin on December 17, 2009. The WPIAL swimming program will be operated during the 2009/2010 school year on a double dual meet basis for all section meets. The boys and girls swimming teams will swim at the sam time at the same pool. Section champions will be determined by the best won/lost record in section play. In the case of a tie in section record for first place, all tied teams will receive a plaque. The dates of the PIAA Championships are March 17-20, 2010, site to be determined. The WPIAL AAA Diving Championships will be held at Pine-Richland HS on Saturday, February 27, 2010. The WPIAL Swimming Championships will be held at the University of Pittsburgh during the week of March 1, 2010. The specific dates will be announced in September and will be established based on the facility availability as determined by the University of Pittsburgh. The WPIAL 2010 Swimming Championship will have Class AAA run first with AA to follow. The time frames will be similar to previous meets. The 2010 WPIAL Championships will be scored to 16 places. WPIAL QUALIFYING STANDARDS A. Teams must have a minimum of 10 competitions (swimming and/or diving) prior to the WPIAL meet to be eligible to score team points at the WPIAL or PIAA Championships. B. Individuals must have been in uniform and available at 75% of the team contests to be eligible for post-season competition. C. In order to qualify for the WPIAL championship event at Pitt, all swimmers must achieve the minimum standards established by the WPIAL. These standards must be met in a WPIAL meet or in an invitational qualifying meet that is scored and uses an electronic timing device. Standards are available on the WPIAL website at www.wpial.org.
