* * * * * * * * * * * * * * O'BRIEN ADVANCES TO PIAA SEMIFINALS Junior standout Kevin O’Brien has advanced to the PIAA semifinal after another impressive performance at Treesdale Golf & Country Club on Wednesday. On a course where he earlier this season set a new course record by shooting a 31, O’Brien made the cut at the WPIAL finals by posting a 79 on the day. Freshman Zack Taylor from Baldwin took gold at the finals by shooting an impressive 71, including a 34 on the back nine. O’Brien shot a 39 on the front nine and finished his day with a solid 40, putting him in him in the top 15. O’Brien moves on to the state semifinals at Tom’s Run in Blairsville on October 18. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS TAME TITANS (10/4/11) North Allegheny bounced back from their loss at Butler on Friday by soundly defeating Shaler 203-258 on Tuesday afternoon. Originally scheduled as a home meet for the Tigers, the competition had to move to Saxon Golf Course after a conflict arose at Diamond Run. Nevertheless, North Allegheny appeared comfortable with the course, with several golfers hovering around par, in spite of soggy conditions. Senior Colton Fedell was the medalist with a 2-over 38, the second time he finished atop the leaderboard this season. The previous time he led the field, he was aided by a hole in one, accomplished during a match at New Castle on September 13. Junior Kevin O'Brien and senior Pat Mittereder were close on his heels, each ending their round with a 39. O'Brien will compete in tomorrow's WPIAL Individual Finals at Treesdale. Earlier this year at Treesdale, he shot a sizzling 31 during a match against Pine-Richland, a mark believed to be a record during WPIAL competition. Brandon Maiello and Mike Sudo also found themselves on the scoresheet, shooting a 42 and 45, respectively. Alex Banfield shot the low round for the Titans, ending with a 44. Following the victory, North Allegheny is 13-2, 11-1 within the section. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS SUFFER FIRST SECTION LOSS, FALL TO BUTLER (9/30/11) The North Allegheny Boys’ Golf Team suffered their first section loss of the season on Friday afternoon, falling to the Butler Golden Tornado, 213-216. It was a miserable day for golf, as for six of the nine holes played, the wind blew ferociously and the cold rain pelted the players as it rained sideways. Numerous golf umbrellas were blown inside out, and drives hung in mid air before being blown straight down to earth. Junior Kevin O’Brien did the best at navigating through the rainy conditions to shoot a team best 41. Senior Pat Mittereder posted a 42, followed by Colton Fedell’s 43 and Brandon Maiello’s 44. Mike Sudo shot a 46 and John McCabe took a DQ. Butler was led by Corey Morabito who shot a 40. By beating the Tigers, the Golden Tornado avenged an earlier loss to NA on September 7. The loss drops North Allegheny’s record to 12-2 on the season and 10-1 in the section. The Tigers will round out their section schedule with a match against Shaler on Tuesday at Saxon Golf Course. Tee time is set for 3:00 pm. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * O'BRIEN ADVANCES TO WPIAL FINALS (9/29/11) North Allegheny junior Kevin O’Brien has advanced to the WPIAL Finals by posting a 75 at Ponderosa Golf Course on Wednesday. Four inches of rain fell on Tuesday night, leaving Ponderosa very difficult to play for the WPIAL Semifinals. O’Brien was able to navigate the adverse conditions, finishing second amongst the competitors. West Allegheny’s Garrett Browning led the field with a 69. Senior Pat Mittereder was involved in a five-way playoff for 12th place, finishing his round with a score of 80. In hole one of the playoff, Mittereder hit a long drive, but overshot the green on his approach. However, he made up for it by chipping within a few inches of the cup. The senior sank the putt for a 4. Three of his competitors were eliminated after failing to match his score. The second playoff hole came down to Mittereder and Penn Hills’ Evan Ruhling. Both players had fantastic drives and chips, but Mittereder missed his putt while Ruhling sank his, claiming the 12th spot and advancing to the WPIAL Finals. Mittereder is the alternate for the competition. North Allegheny junior John McCabe shot an 82 on the day, narrowly missing the cut by two strokes. The WPIAL Individual Finals will take place on October 5. In the meantime, the entire North Allegheny Boys Golf Team hits the links on Friday for a section meeting at Butler. Tee time at the Butler Country Club is set for 3:30. WPIAL SEMIFINALS
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * BOYS GOLF PREVAILS IN TIEBREAKER (9/22/11) North Allegheny and Seneca Valley needed extra holes to settle their match on Thursday. Upon completing the back nine holes at Cranberry Highlands in regulation, both teams were deadlocked at 202-202, forcing a tiebreaker. It was the first time any Tiger golfer had been involved in a playoff since 2003. For a tiebreaker in WPIAL competition, each coach selects two golfers to represent their team on two playoff holes. If the score remained tied after the playoff holes, play would then move to sudden death. Coach Rittman picked her two low shooters of the day, John McCabe and Kevin O'Brien. McCabe led the field with a 36, filling his scorecard with a four on every hole. O'Brien was one stroke behind, ending his round strong with a birdie on 18. On the first playoff hole, the par-4 10th, McCabe's approach shotlanded within ten feet. He sank the putt for birdie. Meanwhile, O'Brien was short of the green with his approach, and had to settle for a bogey following a two-putt. Both Seneca Valley golfers had 4's, and both teams remained tied heading to the second playoff hole. O'Brien quickly made up for his bogey by bombing a 300-yard drive to just in front of the green. A chip sent him past the hole and he two-putted for par. McCabe also had a long drive, however, his ball found a bunker on the right of the fairway. Pitching out of the sand, his shot came to rest within four feet of the hole. He sank the birdie putt, clinching the match for North Allegheny. Both Raider golfers had 5's on the final hole. The last time North Allegheny was in a playoff was the 2003 WPIAL Semifinals, when they tied with Pine-Richland for second place, needing a playoff to determine who would advance to the WPIAL Finals. Alex Morse, then a junior, defeated John Brumberg of Pine-Richland in a playoff that was halted by lightning and rain, forcing the match to be completed the following day. Further details of their encounter can be found in the boys golf archives, by clicking here and scrolling to the second and third headlines. With the victory, Boys Golf bounced back nicely from their defeat against Central Catholic, maintaining their stranglehold atop Section 3. O'Brien, McCabe, and Pat Mittereder will represent North Allegheny in the WPIAL semifinals on Tuesday, set for 9:00 am at Seven Oaks. The North Allegheny Sports Network wishes best of luck to them as they look to advance further in individual competition. The Tigers will return to team competition Wednesday when they host the Shaler Titans at Diamond Run. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS LOSE FIRST OF YEAR TO CENTRAL CATHOLIC (9/21/11) - In a match-up of the undefeated, it was the Central Catholic Boys' Golf team that outlasted the North Allegheny Tigers on Wednesday, 185-189. As expected, this meet went down to the wire and these two teams competed tightly throughout the day. NA's Kevin O'Brien once again posted the low score for the Tigers on the day with a 36. John McCabe and Colton Fedell followed by shooting 37's. Mike Sudo notched a 39, Pat Mittereder posted a 40 and Brandon Maiello rounded out the scores with a 43. However, Central Catholic was up to the task as Hogan Curry came through with the overall low score with a 36. Curry paced the Vikings in a four stroke victory. The loss drops NA to 11-1 on the season, but the Tigers remain undefeated in section play. Central Catholic improves to 14-0 on the season. The Tigers will resume section play with a meeting with Seneca Valley this afternoon. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * THREE TIGERS MAKE CUT AT SECTION QUALIFIER (9/20/11) Three North Allegheny golfers overcame wet conditions at Cranberry Highlands on Tuesday to make the cut at the Section Qualifier. Forty players were enrolled in the tournament, but only ten would hit the target score of 81, including NA’s Kevin O’Brien, John McCabe and Pat Mittereder. In dramatic fashion, Mittereder sank a six-foot put on the last hole to make the cut. The next round for this group will be determined at the WPIAL golf meeting on Thursday morning. In the meantime, the North Allegheny Boys' Golf Team will return to the links on Wednesday for a non-section match with Central Catholic at 3:30 pm. QUALIFIERS
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS TAKE DOWN PINE-RICHLAND, NEXT UP SECTION QUALIFIER (9/16/11) - On a cold and windy day at Diamond Run, the North Allegheny Tigers defeated Pine-Richland for the second time this season, 195-200. The Rams were hoping to avenge an earlier season loss to the Tigers and keep hope alive for a possible share of the section title, but NA's victory eliminated such hopes. Kevin O'Brien posted the low score of the day for North Allegheny with a 36, which included a birdie on number nine. John McCabe and Colton Fedell also birdied the nine hole to finish strong. McCabe posted a 38 and Fedell ended the day by shooting a 41. Pat Mittereder and Brandon Maiello tallied scores of 40 each. Mike Sudo contributed with a 42. North Allegheny will have the weekend off before heading to the Section Qualifiers on Tuesday. O'Brien, McCabe, Mittereder, Fedell, Sudo and Seth Kruetzer will represent the Tigers at Cranberry Highlands. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * BOYS GOLF SIZZLES TO 10-0 START (9/14/11) - One day after sloshing their way to victory North Allegheny Boys Golf returned home to Diamond Run, extending their win streak to ten with a section victory against rival North Hills, 187-203. Under ideal conditions, senior Colton Fedell followed up his hole in one on Tuesday with a season best 36. Junior Kevin O'Brien returned to his position at the top of the leaderboard, shooting a 34, including an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole at Diamond Run. The 487-yard final hole was also friendly to several other Tigers today. Six of eight golfers carefully navigated the greenside bunkers to score under par, including Connor Gingrich sinking his first eagle ever on the final hole of the day. Fedell, John McCabe, Mike Sudo, and Brandon Maiello also birdied number nine, emphatically clinching double digit wins for North Allegheny. The Tigers return to Diamond Run on Thursday in a home match against Pine-Richland. Tee time is set for 3:30 pm. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * FEDELL'S HOLE IN ONE LEADS TIGERS TO VICTORY AT NEW CASTLE (9/13/11) - North Allegheny Boys Golf traveled to New Castle on Tuesday afternoon, where senior Colton Fedell had the highlight of the year thus far. With an eight iron in hand, he aced the par-3 177 yard third hole at Sylvan Heights, on his way to pacing the Tigers with a 38. Despite his accomplishment, it was not entirely smooth sailing for the rest of the team due to the recent heavy rains. Nevertheless, the Tigers managed to pull out a 207-229 victory in less than ideal conditions. Last weekend's rainfall turned much of the course into a swamp, as balls became lodged in the muck. Even parts of some fairways were a quagmire, causing several players to drop due to lost or unplayable golf balls. As a result, much of the team shot above their average score. Junior Kevin O'Brien finished with a 44, his first round over 40 this year. His previous high score was 38 in the season opener at home against New Castle. Fellow junior John McCabe also finished with a 44. However, Pat Mittereder and Mike Sudo provided stability, shooting 40 and 41, respectively, giving North Allegheny their seventh section win in as many matches this season. In the JV match, North Allegheny fell to Central Catholic by just one stroke. However, they too had their highlight of the year. Junior Jack Hopkins had a hole in one on the par-3 fifth hole, at the Bob O'Connor golf course, giving North Allegheny golfers the remarkable feat of two holes in one on Wednesday. The victory over New Castle extends the varsity boys' record to 9-0 overall, and gives them a sweep of the Red Hurricane on the year. Next up for the golf team is North Hills, as they will try to extend their winning streak to double digits on Wednesday afternoon at Diamond Run.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS ESCAPE INDIANS, WIN EIGHTH STRAIGHT (9/8/11) - Despite posting their worst collective score of the season, the North Allegheny Boys Golf team managed to squeak past section rival North Hills at Highland Country Club on Thursday afternoon, 201-207. Kevin O'Brien shot the low round of the day with a 36. This past weekend the standout junior won his first career International Junior Golf Tournament, capturing the crown with a final round 71. He finished the two day event with a 144, 2-over par, coming back from a stroke down on Sunday to win. For the complete story recapping his weekend, click here! Senior Pat Mittereder was one stroke behind O'Brien, shooting a 37. Junior John McCabe chipped in for birdie on the par 3 ninth hole to end his round with a 41, while sophomore Mike Sudo finished his round with a 42. Senior Colton Fedell and junior Seth Kreutzer each scored a 45 on the day. By defeating the Indians, North Allegheny improved its record to 8-0. The Tigers are also now 6-0 in section competition, having defeated each conference foe once. The Boys Golf team will begin the second half of their section schedule next Tuesday when they travel to New Castle to face the Red Hurricanes. The teams will hit the links at 3:30 pm.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * FIVE GOLFERS BREAK 40 AS TIGERS WIN SEVENTH STRAIGHT (9/7/11) - Although gray skies posed threatening weather for the second consecutive match, the Tigers golf team was able to finish their match Wednesday without any delays, defeating Butler 184-200. Thanks to the rains in the early part of the week, Diamond Run was soaked, offering little roll, but very soft greens. As a result, eight golfers shot under 40, including all five scorers from North Allegheny. As has become commonplace this season, Kevin O'Brien was the medalist with a one-under 34. Senior Pat Mittereder was two off of O'Brien's pace, shooting a season-best 36. Two Tigers also tied their season bests, with senior Colton Fedell finishing with a 38, and sophomore Mike Sudo ending his round with a 39. John McCabe has also become one of the most consistent golfers on the team, shooting his fifth straight round of 40 or lower with a 37. With the victory, the Tigers are 7-0 for the first time since 2008. That season, North Allegheny won the section, finishing in 6th place in the WPIAL team semifinals. The Boys Golf team will seek their eighth consecutive victory tomorrow when they visit North Hills to take on the Indians. Tee time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS OUTLAST TITANS, WEATHER, TO SECURE VICTORY (9/1/11) - After a long weather delay, featuring rain and some lightning, the Boys Golf team finally extended their record to 6-0, defeating Shaler 198-225 on Thursday afternoon. North Allegheny was the first visiting team to break 200 at Pheasant Ridge, the new home course of the Titans this year. Junior Kevin O'Brien led the Tigers with a 36. Closely on his heels were Mike Sudo, John McCabe, and Colton Fedell, shooting 39, 40, and 40, respectively. The victory improves the Tigers' section record to 4-0. For the first time all season, junior Kevin O'Brien did not lead the field, despite shooting a 37. Instead, a different North Allegheny junior led the way, as O'Brien's teammate John McCabe bested his score by three strokes, finishing with a 1-under 34. Senior Pat Mittereder also shot well, ending his round with a 38. Colton Fedell and Seth Kreutzer contributed a 40 and 42, respectively. Franklin Regional was led by Nate Hlozek's 39, the only Panther to break 40. The victory pushes the Tigers' record to 5-0, including 4-0 in home matches. Their perfect home record will remain in tact for at least a week, as the golf team does not return home until next Wednesday against Butler. For their next competition, they will hit the road on Thursday afternoon, traveling to section foe Shaler for a 1:30 tee time.
