(9/24/12) After the Tigers squeaked past Seneca Valley a mere twelve days ago, the Raiders returned the favor against their section rival, edging North Allegheny 200-204. The match was contested on the back nine holes of Cranberry Highlands.
North Allegheny's Kevin O'Brien shot a 37 this afternoon and was matched on the scoresheet by Seneca Valley golfer Brennan Bench. Martin Lazzaro was the only other golfer to break forty. Through the three lowest scores on each side, the teams were deadlocked. However, Seneca Valley used its depth to eke out a win, evening the season series between the conference foes.
The loss drops the Tigers to 12-3 on the season, with their next team match scheduled for Thursday when they entertain the Shaler Titans. Scheduled tee times are set for 3:30 pm.
Kevin O'Brien will return to Cranberry Highlands on Tuesday for the WPIAL Individual Semifinals. O'Brien medaled in last week's Section Qualifier event and will look to continue to the WPIAL Individual Finals, scheduled in October. INDIVIDUAL SCORING (Top 5 scores are counted)
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * NORTH ALLEGHENY SNEAKS PAST MT. LEBANON, 188-196
(9/21/12) The Tigers traveled to the South Hills for a non-section contest against Mt. Lebanon and returned home after capturing their seventh match in a row, defeating the Blue Devils 188-196. The meeting was scheduled for earlier in the year, but inclement weather forced a postponement.
With clear skies on Friday afternoon, Josh Huhn led North Allegheny with a 35. A pair of Mt Lebanon golfers also tied Huhn's mark of par on the day. Additional scorers for North Allegheny were Martin Lazzaro (36), Brandon Maiello (38), Seth Kreutzer (39), and Kevin O'Brien (40).
The win boosts North Allegheny to 12-2 overall, with their next contest scheduled Monday at Seneca Valley. In a previous encounter this season, the Tigers squeaked by the Raiders by three strokes. Undoubtedly, Seneca Valley will be looking to exact revenge on their own home course of Cranberry Highlands. Tee times are set for 3:30 pm.
A day after the meet, Kevin O'Brien will return to Cranberry Highlands for the WPIAL Individual Semifinals. O'Brien medaled in last week's Section Qualifier event and will look to continue to the WPIAL Individual Finals, scheduled in October. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS OUTPLAY VIKINGS, EARN 177-182 WIN
(9/13/12) After dropping their first meeting with Central Catholic earlier this year, the Boys Golf Team was determined to not let it happen again. Thursday afternoon at Diamond Run, the squad benefited from a home course advantage and stellar team effort to walk away with a 177-182 victory over their section foe.
The score off 177 was the lowest for North Allegheny this season. Senior Kevin O'Brien eagled hole number nine to finish with a score of 37. Several of his teammates scored even lower. Josh Huhn, Seth Kreutzer and Brandon Maiello concluded their rounds with identical 36s. Senior John McCabe, courtesy of a pair of bogies and a pair of birdies, finished at par with a 35. However, they were all outdone by medalist winner Martin Lazzaro. After already bogeying the fourth hole and birdying the sixth, Lazzaro sank a birdie on the ninth and final hole for a 1-under 34.
The section win extends North Allegheny's record to 10-2, and the Tigers hold a 7-2 mark within conference play. The team will have the weekend free from competition, before meeting North Hills on Monday at Shannopin. Kevin O'Brien shot a 35 to pace the team and John McCabe nearly matched him with a 36. Seneca Valley's Mike Trotta was the medalist on the day with a low round of 34.
Up next for North Allegheny is a section showdown with Pittsburgh Central Catholic. The Vikings came away with a win over the Tigers in their earlier meeting at their home course. On Thursday, the location will shift to Diamond Run, where the Tigers will look to use their home course advantage. The teams will tee up at 3:15 pm. INDIVIDUAL SCORING (Top 5 scores are counted)
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * KREUTZER ON PAR, LEADS TIGERS PAST TORNADO, 182-215 (9/11/12) Seth Kreutzer led all golfers with an even par 35 at Butler Country Club, as the Tigers defeated the Golden Tornado 182-215 on Tuesday afternoon. It was the lowest round Kreutzer shot this year in school competition, scoring one birdie and one bogey through the nine-hole round. Previously, his best score this year was a 37, coming against Pine-Richland on August 28. Several of his teammates were hot on his heels, as Martin Lazzaro, John McCabe, and Josh Huhn each finished with a 36. Huhn chipped in for birdie on the third hole, but three-putted the eighth, quashing his chance to tie Kreutzer on the day. Brandon Maiello also scored for the Tigers finishing with a round of 39. The Tigers now stand at 7-2 on the season, with a mark of 4-2 in the section. North Allegheny will continue their busy week on Wednesday, when they meet Seneca Valley and North Hills in a tri-match at Diamond Run. The match will begin at 3:30 pm. Three of NA's top six golfers had never played the Orchard Course at Treesdale before, a course designed by legend Arnold Palmer, and without knowledge of the course the Tigers struggled just enough for a game Pine-Richland squad to pull out the victory. Senior Kevin O'Brien was matched by the Rams Sam Dunsmore and Brandon McCuen who all shot a 38. Pine-Richland's Kevin Kunkle led all golfers with a 35. For NA, following O'Brien's 38 was John McCabe and Seth Kreutzer who both posted 39's. Among the highlights for North Allegheny, senior Kevin O'Brien overcame a long drive over the green on the ninth hole to save par and finished one under par with a 35. Senior Brandon Maiello came on strong down the stretch and birdied the last two holes to finish with an even par 36. It was also the first home match of the season as the Tigers ruled their home turf at Diamond Run. Despite a strong wind, North Allegheny overcame the breeze and the Rams behind a complete team performance. While the Rams had some sterling individual efforts, including Brandon McCuen's 32 and Kevin Kunkle's 34, the Tigers were all around stronger and it showed in the final outcome. Senior Kevin O'Brien eagled the ninth hole on his way to a 36, and fellow senior John McCabe equaled that effort with a 36 as well. However, it was sophomore Josh Huhn who had the top performance for the Tigers by posting a 33.
