Tigers Upended By Butler, 3-1

Posted on:

Butler pulled itself into a third-place tie with North Allegheny in the Section 1-AAAA standings with a 3-1 win over the Tigers on Friday night. Sophomore starting pitcher Connor Ollio limited the Tigers to one run on three hits in a complete game victory. North Allegheny right-hander Jake Fischbaugh performed admirably on a damp night, grinding through six innings and holding the Golden Tornado to just two runs while striking out five.

NA tallied the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning when Blake Young drove in Alex Mesaros with an RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead. Mesaros reached base three times in the game, including two walks and a single to earn Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors.

The score stayed 1-0, Tigers, until Butler tied it with an RBI single by Jarrett Lyon in the top of the fourth inning. Lyon’s base hit came with two outs in the fourth, as did Ollio’s RBI single in the fifth inning that put Butler ahead, 2-1. The Golden Tornado added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Nic Kibbie raced home on a wild pitch for a 3-1 lead.

With the Tigers down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Mesaros singled and Keegan Phillips walked to put the game-tying run on the base paths. However, Ollio buckled down and struck out Ben Marsico to close out the ballgame and a 3-1 Butler victory.

North Allegheny drops to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in Section 1-AAAA. Butler improves to 8-3 overall and 3-3 in the section. The Tigers host Howland (OH) tonight in a non-section game at NASH.
