File Photos Courtesy of Jim Judkis PINE-RICHLAND ENDS TIGERS' UNBEATEN SEASON Pine-Richland defeated the Tigers, 3-2, in the semifinals of the WPIAL Team Tournament at North Hills on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Matt Smith won at #3 singles for the Tigers while the #1 doubles team was also victorious. The freshman team of Sam Gill and Matt Kosovec earned the second team point for NA. In the singles competition, senior Zack Skorupka had to retire because of injury in his match against Casey Watt. Skorupka won the first set, 7-6, with a 7-3 tiebreaker. Watt took the second set, 6-4, and was leading, 4-0, in the third set when Skorupka could not finish. At #2 singles, Steve Eaglen downed senior Payom Dousti, 7-6, 6-2. Smith came through against Nick Kluthe with a 6-4, 6-4 win at number three. In the doubles play, Gill and Kosovec downed Rob Lawler and Ron Heurich of the Rams, 6-3, 6-4. At #2 doubles, the junior team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac won the first set, 6-4, only to see Eliot Blackstone and Brian Yates rally to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4. The Tigers came close with tiebreakers and three-set matches but could not come up with the decisive third point. Playing in their final match for NA were seniors Zack Skorupka and Payom Dousti. Congratulations to the two NA super seniors for a great career! To celebrate the conclusion of another fantastic season, the varsity tennis team will be sponsoring two weeks of Intramural Tennis! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS DOWN NORWIN, 4-1, TO ADVANCE TO WPIAL SEMIFINALS Led by seniors Zack Skorupka and Payom Dousti who won their singles matches, the Tigers eliminated Norwin, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Team Tournament at the Senior High courts on Tuesday afternoon. In doubles play, the freshman team of Matt Kosovec and Sam Gill won at #1 doubles while the junior team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac took their match at number two. With the win, the Tigers advanced to the semifinals this afternoon. NA will meet Pine-Richland at the North Hills courts with match time set for 3:00 pm. The Tigers edged the Rams, 3-2, in a non-section match early in the season. ALL TIGER FANS ARE URGED TO
ATTEND AND * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS COMPLETE UNDEFEATED SEASON WITH 4-1 VICTORY OVER SEWICKLEY ACADEMY The Tigers traveled to Sewickley Academy on Friday afternoon and came home with a 4-1 victory over the Panthers. With the win, NA finished the regular season unbeaten with a record of 17-0. The victory was the 21st consecutive win for the Tigers over a two-year period. Seniors Zack Skorupka and Payom Dousti led the way with victories in the singles matches. In doubles play, the freshman team of Matt Kosovec and Sam Gill and the junior team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac swept the doubles to secure the victory. In other tennis news, senior Chad Skorupka has decided to drop out of the PIAA Singles Tournament. Skorupka won the WPIAL title earlier this year to qualify for the state tournament. The NA senior has decided to attend the North Allegheny Senior Prom. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS TUNE UP FOR PLAYOFFS WITH 5-0 WIN OVER CENTRAL CATHOLIC The unbeaten Tigers won their 20th consecutive match over a two-year period as they downed a good Central Catholic team, 5-0, at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon. In singles play, seniors Zack Skorupka and Payom Dousti, along with freshman Matt Smith, were victorious to pace the Tigers. The doubles teams swept their very competitive matches to complete the shutout. At #1 doubles, it was the freshman team of Sam Gill and Matt Kosovec while the junior team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac won at number two. The Tigers will complete their regular season tomorrow when they travel to Sewickley Academy for a non-section match. The starting time is scheduled for 4:15 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DOUSTI, GILL LOSE IN QUARTERFINALS After winning their first round match over Sam Jockel and Joe Appolonia of Indiana, 10-1, the #1 Tiger doubles team of senior Payom Dousti and freshman Sam Gill were eliminated in the quarterfinals. The team of Jay Jones and Chris Foster from Upper St. Clair downed the NA duo, 10-5, to drop them from the tournament. The number two team of freshmen Matt Smith and Matt Kosovec was defeated by the top team from Upper St. Clair, Alex Su and Arjun Prabhu, by a score of 10-3. WPIAL SECTION DOUBLES TOURNAMENT
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS DOWN NORTH HILLS, 4-1, TO WIN SECTION TITLE The Tigers wrapped up the section title with a 4-1 victory at North Hills on Thursday afternoon. Senior Zack Skorupka and junior Adam Leach led the way with straight-set victories in singles play. In doubles action, Section Champions senior Payom Dousti and freshman Sam Gill prepared for Monday's WPIAL tournament with an easy win. The #2 team of freshmen Matt Smith and Matt Kosovec also won convincingly as they too got ready for Monday's tournament. The Doubles Tournament will get under way on Monday at the Senior High courts with action set to begin at 1:00 pm. The finals will be held on Tuesday at Shady Side Academy. The win gave the Tigers a perfect section record of 10-0 in winning the title. The overall NA record improved to 15-0 with just two non-section matches remaining. The Tigers will play Central Catholic and Sewickley Academy in preparation for the WPIAL Team Championships. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS SHUT OUT SHALER, 5-0, FOR 14TH CONSECUTIVE WIN The Tigers clinched a playoff spot with a 5-0 victory over the Shaler Titans at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon. The Titans were no match for NA as the Tigers won their matches in straight sets. In singles play, senior Zack Skorupka, freshman Matt Smith and junior Adam Leach dominated their opponents. At number one doubles, the Section Champion team of senior Payom Dousti and freshman Sam Gill had little trouble. The junior team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac won their match easily. The win improved the NA section record to 9-0, the overall mark to 14-0. The Tigers will travel to North Hills this afternoon in search of another unbeaten section record as today's match will complete section play. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm at North Hills. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DOUSTI, GILL WIN SECTION DOUBLES TITLE In an all-NA final, the number one team of senior Payom Dousti and freshman Sam Gill defeated the number two team of freshmen Matt Smith and Matt Kosovec, 6-4, 6-1, to win the Section 2 Doubles Championship. Both teams will advance to the WPIAL Doubles Tournament next week. In quarterfinal action, Dousti and Gill defeated Sean Moore and Jared Hartzel from Seneca Valley, 10-1 while Smith and Kosevec knocked off Mike Kress and Tom Garka of Hampton, 10-4. In the semifinals, Dousti and Gill eliminated Eric Fischer and Adam Jones from Hampton, 6-3, 6-4, while Smith and Kosevec took care of Steve Herchko and Matt Maguire of North Hills, 7-5, 6-3. The Tiger team is back in action this afternoon when they host Shaler at the Senior High courts. A win today will clinch a playoff spot with a victory. Match time is scheduled for 3:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS SHUT OUT SENECA FOR 13th STRAIGHT VICTORY The Tigers won their 13th consecutive match without a loss with a 5-0 victory over Seneca Valley on Friday at the Oxford Athletic Club. In singles play, senior Zack Skorupka, junior Adam Leach, and freshman Sam Gill were overpowering in singles play. In doubles action, the freshmen team of Matt Smith and Matt Kosevec and the junior team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac dominated play. The victory kept the Tigers in first place in Section 2 with an 8-0 record. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WPIAL TENNIS - 2006 The Tigers will compete again in Class AAA along with 36 other teams. The WPIAL will advance three singles players and three sets of doubles teams to the PIAA Tournament. The WPIAL champion and runner up will advance to the PIAA team championship. WPIAL team championships will begin when section play is completed. The section winner and runner up will compete in the tournament. If two teams tie for first place, only those teams will enter the tournament and both will receive a plaque. If two teams tie for second place, only the winner of the head-to-head competition will advance to the tournament round. Multiple ties will be broken in the following manner: a. Section won-lost records
of all tied teams will be compiled. In all section matches and WPIAL competition, the seven-man team concept will be followed. Each team will have three singles players and two teams of doubles players for each match. No player can participate in both singles and doubles on the same day. Coaches must play their best player of the three singles players designated for each match at the number one singles position, second best at number two, and third best at number three. Postponed matches must be played in order of postponement and scheduled on the first common open date. Make up WPIAL section matches must have preference over exhibition matches, JV, and junior high matches. CLASS AAA - 37 TEAMS
