LADY TIGERS FALL TO SHALER,
1-0, IN ELEVEN INNINGS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

A two-out double by catcher Megan Lynch in the bottom of the eleventh inning proved to be the difference as Shaler edged the Lady Tigers, 1-0, in a PIAA quarterfinal contest at Fairhaven Park on Thursday afternoon.  Senior Aimee Dassner retired the first 19 batters and allowed only one hit over the first seven innings.  Senior catcher Sam Goettman and junior 2B Lauren Vrabel both doubled for NA, but the Lady Tigers could not find a way to score.

Dassner controlled the Titans over the first six innings retiring the side in order in each frame.  In the bottom of the third, the Lady Tigers had a chance to take the lead.  With one out, Vrabel walked.  Senior center fielder Ali Morse grounded a base hit to center field, but Vrable was thrown out attempting to take third.  Sophomore righthander Heather Elstner got the final out on a ground out.

In the bottom of the fourth, NA again put two runners on base with one out.  Freshman RF Kelsey Fedell singled to left center field, and Goettman followed with a base hit to left.  Elstner then got a strike out and ground out to end the threat.  In the top of the seventh, Goettman drilled a double down the left field line to lead off.  With sophomore Leslie Vanderkolk running for Goettman, Elstner got two ground outs with Vanderkolk moving to third with two outs.  Dassner followed with a hard ground ball into right field.  Right fielder Kristen Lynch fielded the ball and just got Dassner at first to retire the side.

In the bottom of the inning, Dassner hit shortstop Julie Stampfle with a pitch to give Shaler their first base runner with one out.  Lynch followed with a bunt single, but Dassner was able to get out of the inning on a force out at third and a foul pop fly.

In the top of the eighth, NA threatened again.  After Vrabel led off with a base hit to center field, Morse sacrificed her to second.  Senior LF Brittany Bennett then drew a walk, but Elstner again was able to get out of the inning on a ground ball and pop fly.  In the bottom of the ninth, Shaler had a chance when center fielder Lia Sorce led off with an infield single.  After Dassner struck out the next two batters, LF Jen Simile singled to short left field.  Dassner then retired the side on a ground ball to Smith who stepped on third base for the final out.

In the top of the tenth with one out, Vrable hit a long drive that hit the left field fence on one hop for a double.  Elstner again rose to the occasion getting the final two outs on ground balls.  In the top of the eleventh, junior shortstop Mel Boozel led off with a single.  Fedell followed with a hard ground ball to short that Shaler turned into a 6-4-3 double play.  In the bottom of the inning, Dassner got the first two outs on a strike out and a ground out.  With two outs, Stampfle singled into short left field and went to second on a wild pitch.  Lynch followed with a line drive to left center field that rolled to the fence allowing Stampfle to score the winning run and end the season for the Lady Tigers.

It was a great pitching performance by Dassner.  The NA senior allowed only six hits in eleven innings while striking out 13 and walking none.  For her performance, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Aimee Dassner as the Player of the Game.  Offensively, NA left seven runners on base, two at third.  In the end, the failure to score a run allowed Shaler a chance to win.

The loss ended the NA season with a final record of 19-6.  The Lady Tigers were section co-champions and WPIAL champions.  NA won thirteen of their last fifteen games but came up a run short in their final contest.

FEDELL'S HOME RUN BEATS CARRICK, 1-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Freshman right fielder Kelsey Fedell led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a line drive home run over the left center field fence at Fairhaven Park on Monday evening to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 victory over City League Champion Carrick in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.  Senior lefthander Aimee Dassner allowed only two infield hits while striking out seven and walking none to earn her eleventh victory of the season.

Neither team was able to do much over the first six and one half innings.  In the bottom of the first, senior left fielder Brittany Bennett worked a walk against freshman right hander Rachelle Warnock.  With one out, Fedell hit a hard ground ball to second that was turned into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

In the top of the second, 2B Victoria Doerschner beat out an infield single but was stranded at second base when Dassner got a ground out and strike out to end the inning.  Carrick would not get another runner past first base.  In the bottom of the second, sophomore DP Katie Polley walked and was sacrificed to second by senior third baseman Stephanie Smith.  Warnock got the final out on a foul fly ball down the right field line.

in the bottom of the fourth, Fedell lined a single to right field that was misplayed by the Carrick fielder.  Fedell tried to make it to third but was thrown out on a good relay throw by shortstop Aubrey Martin.  In the bottom of the sixth, junior second baseman Lauren Vrabel beat out an infield hit but was stranded at second base.

Dassner finished the game by retiring the last nine batters she faced setting the stage for the bottom of the seventh.  With a 1-0 count, Fedell ended the contest with a line shot to move NA into the state quarterfinals.

It was another outstanding pitching performance by Dassner who controlled the Raiders throughout the contest.  The Lady Tigers had trouble with Warnock with the exception of Fedell, who had two of the three NA hits and hit the ball hard all three times at the plate.  For her game winning effort, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Kelsey Fedell as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Lady Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Quad A Championship playoffs.  NA will meet either Shaler or Dubois on Thursday.

LADY TIGERS BEAT SHALER, 3-2, TO
CAPTURE WPIAL TITLE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers came from behind to defeat Shaler, 3-2, at Lilly Field at California U. of PA on Thursday night to win the WPIAL Quad A Championship.  Senior catcher Sam Goettman led the way with a home run and single good for two RBIs.  Senior pitcher Aimee Dassner limited Shaler to five hits to win her tenth game of the season.

The Titans threatened in the top of the first when they loaded the bases with two outs on a walk, base hit and hit batter.  Dassner got 2B Melissa McQuade to ground to senior Stephanie Smith who touched third base to end the inning.

The Lady Tigers had runners on base in each of the first three innings but could not score off sophomore RHP Heather Elstner.  A walk to senior LF Brittany Bennett in the first, a base hit to left field by sophomore DP Katie Polley in the second, and a single by Bennett in the third put NA runners on base.  Successful sacrifices by junior shortstop Mel Boozel amd Smith moved the runners into scoring position but NA could not bring them home.

In the top of the fourth with one out, Elstner walked.  McQuade followed with a line drive into the right center field gap that scored courtesy runner Val Smolter with the first run of the game.  With two outs, 1B Lisa Huber hit a looper out behind second base for an infield single that scored McQuade.  Shaler took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.

Goettman lead off the bottom of the fourth with a long home run over the right center field fence to cut the margin to 2-1.  With one out, Smith beat out an infield hit but Elstner again ended the threat with a ground ball out.

The Lady Tigers rallied in the bottom of the fifth.  With one out, Bennett lined a base hit past Elstner into center field.  Boozel followed with a line shot to left field.  After a fly ball to right for the second out, Goettman came through with her second hit to score Bennett with the tying run.  When the ball was misplayed in center field, both runners moved up a base.  Polley followed with a ground ball to short that was dropped as Boozel scored the go ahead run.  Elstner got a strike out to end the inning, but NA had taken a 3-2 lead after five.

Dassner retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh inning to preserve the victory.  In the top of the seventh, 3B Erin Fieldhouse hit a line drive off Dassner's leg, but the senior pitcher recovered to get the out at first.  Dassner was tough down the stretch, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters.

It was a good team effort by the Lady Tigers who recorded nine hits in the game.  Defensively, NA played well handling all plays with just one error in the contest.  For her efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Sam Goettman as the Player of the Game.

The title was the third in the past five years for the Lady Tigers.  The Lady Tigers will meet Carrick in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Monday afternoon at Fairhaven Park in Kennedy Township.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS DOWN PENN-TRAFFORD, 3-1, TO ADVANCE TO TITLE GAME

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers took advantage of five Penn-Trafford errors to defeat the Warriors, 3-1, at Gateway High School on Thursday evening in the semifinals of the WPIAL Quad A tournament.  Junior 2B Lauren Vrabel and freshman right fielder Kelsey Fedell got the key hits to drive in NA runs.  Senior left hander Aimee Dassner allowed only four hits and struck out seven to earn the victory.

Penn-Trafford had runners on base in both of the first two innings, but Dassner retired the side without a run scoring.  In the bottom of the second, NA took the lead.  After senior catcher Sam Goettman reached on an error, sophomore Julie Angeloni went in as a courtesy runner.  Sophomore DP Katie Polley was safe at first when her bunt was misplayed by the P-T infield.  Senior 3B Stephanie Smith followed with a single to right field to load the bases.  After a force out at home plate, Vrabel lined a single to right field scoring Polley with Smith scoring when the ball was booted in right field.  After two innings, the Lady Tigers had a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Warrior LF Angela Speranza was safe on an error and 3B Lauren Persico followed with a base hit to left field.  Once again, Dassner was able to get out of the jam by retiring the next three batters.  In the top of the fifth, Angela Speranza led off with a triple to deep right field.  Dassner was equal to occasion again as she retired the top three hitters in the Warrior lineup on two ground balls and a line drive to the mound.

The Lady Tigers picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. After senior LF Brittany Bennett was safe on another P-T error, junior shortstop Mel Boozel sacrificed her to second.  Fedell then lined a shot to center field to score Bennett with the third NA run.  Goettman followed with a single to left field, but P-T senior pitcher Emily Kistler got the next two outs without further damage.

Penn-Trafford had a chance in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with no outs on a base hit by Kistler, an NA error, and a walk.  After a force play at the plate, Vrabel made a good play to get sophomore SS Stephanie Speranza at first with a run scoring to cut the lead to 3-1.  Dassner came through again in the clutch as she got the top P-T hitter, first baseman Suzie Denillo, to pop up to Vrabel to end the game.

It was a good effort by the Lady Tigers who were able to take advantage of the opportunities they had to score three runs.  NA Head Coach Rick Meister said, "We were able to come up with the key hit to capitalize on their errors."  Credit Dassner and the Lady Tiger infield for making big plays with the game on the line to aid the NA cause.  For her efforts at the plate and in the field, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Lauren Vrabel as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Lady Tigers advance to the WPIAL Quad A Championship game next Thursday against neighborhood and section rival Shaler.  The game will be played at California University of Pennsylvania.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 5:45 pm.  Game time has been scheduled for 6:00 pm.

DASSNER'S NO-HITTER BEATS HEMPFIELD, 1-0, IN WPIAL QUARTERFINALS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior lefthander Aimee Dassner tossed a no-hitter on Monday afternoon and evening at Fairhaven Park to lead the Lady Tigers to a 1-0 victory over Hempfield in WPIAL quarterfinal action.  Senior leftfielder Brittany Bennett led off the game with a triple and scored on a wild pitch for the game's only run.  Dassner allowed a walk and hit a batter while striking out nine in a near perfect performance.

In the top of the first, Bennett led off with a fly ball down the right field line that just fell in fair territory.  When Hempfield right fielder Sara Melius failed to make a diving catch, the ball rolled free allowing Bennett to go all the way to third for a leadoff triple.  After one out, Bennett scored what would be the only run of the game on a wild pitch.  Hempfield senior right hander Lauren Shaheen did not allow a hit after the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, Dassner walked cleanup hitter LF Marcie Potuzko to lead off the inning.  After a sacrifice moved Potuzko to second, Dassner retired the side on a strike out and a ground ball to short.  In the top of the third, Bennett reached on an error with two outs and stole second base.  Shaheen got out of the inning with a pop fly to second base.

In the bottom of the third, Shaheen led off by hitting a hard ground ball up the middle.  Junior 2B Lauren Vrabel made a diving stop to her right, jumped to her feet, and threw out Shaheen for the first out of the inning.  It was the defensive play of the game!

Dassner walked with one out in the fifth with sophomore Julie Angeloni going in as a courtesy runner.  After Vrabel sacrificed her to second, Shaheen once again got the side out without a run with a ground ball to second.  In the bottom of the sixth, Hempfield threatened to tie the game.  With out out, DP Rachel Coletta was hit by a pitch with courtesy runner Lupe Lupinacci replacing her at first.  With two outs, 2B Amanda Rupert hit a ground ball near second place that Boozel could not come up with both runners safe on second and first respectively.  Dassner got third baseman Sara Pettyjohn to ground out to short on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning with NA clinging to the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Dassner got the side in order, striking out the last two batters to end the game in style.  It was a tremendous performance by Dassner who was in control for the entire game.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Aimee Dassner as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved their overall record to 16-5 as they advanced to the WPIAL Quad AAAA semifinals.  NA will meet Penn-Trafford, a 4-1 winner of Kiski Area.  The game will be played at Gateway on Thursday with game time scheduled for 5:00 pm.

SEVENTH INNING RALLY LIFTS LADY TIGERS OVER LATROBE, 5-3

by Coach Rick Meister

The North Allegheny Tigers closed out their regular season with a solid come-from-behind victory at Latrobe.  The final score was North Allegheny 5 - Latrobe 3.  The Tigers relied on the strong pitching of junior left-hander Kelly Baxter, who limited Latrobe to just one earned run through seven innings to pick up her fourth win of the season against one loss.

The game was scoreless for the first two innings.  In the third, Latrobe scored a run on two singles and a fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead.  That score remained the same through six innings, with both teams showing solid pitching and defense to thwart any attempted rallies.

In the top of the seventh with NA trailing 1-0, the Tiger bats came alive.  Junior second baseman Lauren Vrabel opened the inning with a single to right field.  Following a perfectly executed sacrifice by senior center fielder Ali Morse which moved Vrabel to second, senior shortstop (yes, that's right) Brittany Bennett lined a single up the middle to score Vrabel with the tying run.  On an attempt to get Vrabel at the plate, Bennett moved to second base.  Sophomore left fielder Leslie Vanderkolk followed with a single to right field.  When Bennett was waved toward the plate, the ensuing throw allowed Vanderkolk to take second, while Bennett returned to third on the decoy.  Freshman Kelsey Fedell laid down a safety squeeze bunt, and when Latrobe elected to hold Bennett at third, Fedell was safe at first to load the bases with one out.  Senior catcher Sam Goettman then hit a hard grounder to second base, and on the fielder's choice retiring Goettman at first, Bennett scored the go-ahead run and the other runners moved up a base.  Sophomore first baseman Katie Polley then looped a double down the left field line to drive in both Vanderkolk and Fedell with runs number three and four.  Polley scored on senior third baseman Stephanie Smith's single to complete the scoring for the Tigers.

Latrobe made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh.  Baxter got the first two batters on a ground out to third and a ground out to the mound.  The next two Latrobe batters reached on Tiger infield errors, and scored on a double by Latrobe left fielder Jen Sapone.  Baxter got the third out on a third-to-first ground out, and the Tigers had the victory in hand.

With the win over a highly regarded Latrobe team, North Allegheny finishes the season with a 15-5 overall record and had already clinched a share of the Section 3AAAA  Championship.  The WPIAL tournament brackets will be announced tomorrow.  Check the website for the latest information about the date, time and place.

AMBRIDGE TOPS TIGERS, 3-0, IN NINE INNINGS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The #1 ranked AAA Ambridge Bridgers scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Lady Tigers, 3-0, on Senior Day at the Senior High field on Monday afternoon and evening.  NA had only two hits against Ambridge senior RHP Rochelle Carello.  Senior left handed pitcher Aimee Dassner shut out the Bridgers over the first eight innings before leaving after hit by a line drive in the top of the ninth inning.

There were limited scoring opportunities throughout the game as both pitchers dominated.  In the top of the first, Ambridge 2B Liz Decima led off with a base hit to left field and was sacrificed to second.  Dassner retired the side on two strike outs and a ground out.  Decima singled again in the top of the third with two outs but did not score.

Carello got the first thirteen Lady Tigers, including seven by strike out, before senior third baseman reached on an error in the bottom of the fourth.  Carello retired the next two batters to keep the game scoreless after four innings.

Ambridge had the first scoring threat in the top of the fifth.  With one out, catcher Courtney Briola singled to left field.  After LF Ashley Ferguson sacrificed her to second, Decima walked.  Dassner then struck out CF Katrina Gross to retire the side.  In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, senior RF Brittany Bennett got the first NA hit on a bad hop single.  Carello was able to get the final out on a pop fly to short stop to keep the game scoreless after six innings.

Ambridge once again threatened in the top of the seventh.  Third baseman Lisa Coyle led off with a single and was sacrificed to second.  After Briola walked, Ferguson grounded to Smith who tagged third for the second out.  Decima followed with another ground ball to Smith who retired the side by again stepping on the third base bag.  Both pitchers got the side in order in the eighth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Ambridge right fielder Amy Joy lined a shot off the foot of Dassner and reached first on the infield single.  Dassner had to leave the game and was replaced by junior LHP Kelly Baxter.  Coyle followed with a base hit to left field, and both runners were sacrificed to third by Gorman.  Briola followed with a ground ball that scored Joy with the first run of the game when the throw to the plate was not in time.  Ferguson drove in the second Ambridge run with a single to left field, but Briola was thrown out attempting to advance to third base on a good throw by Bennett to Smith.  The Bridgers got an unearned run when Decima's soft line drive was misplaced for the only NA error of the game.  Baxter got the final out on a ground out, but Ambridge took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

The Lady Tigers threatened in the bottom of the ninth.  After senior CF Ali Morse led off with a line drive single to right center field, the Bridgers got the first out on a force play at second.  After junior SS Mel Boozel drew a walk, freshman DP Kelsey Fedell hit a long drive to deep left center field.  Gross went back and caught the ball just in front of the fence for the second out.  A fly ball to center field ended the contest as the Bridgers picked up a 3-0 non-section win.

It was an outstanding game between two playoff bound teams for the first eight innings.  Dassner was tough as she allowed only five hits and struck out nine before having to leave the contest. For her efforts on the mound, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Aimee Dassner as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the Lady Tigers' overall record fell to 14-5 on the season.  NA will close out their regular season with another non-section game against a tough opponent.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Latrobe to meet the Wildcats in a 4:00 pm contest this afternoon.  Playoff pairings will be announced later this week.  Be sure to check the website for the post-season matchups!

LADY TIGERS DOWN NORTH HILLS, 2-0, TO TIE FOR SECTION TITLE

by Coach Rick Meister

The North Allegheny Tigers captured a share of the W.P.I.A.L. Section 3-AAAA championship with an exciting ten-inning 2-0 victory over host North Hills at Scharmyn Park.  Outstanding pitching by both North Hills' junior pitcher Louann Weigand and North Allegheny's senior pitcher Aimee Dassner kept the game scoreless for the first nine innings.

In the top of the tenth, North Allegheny scored when  Dassner led off with a single to center field.  Following a wild pitch that sent courtesy runner Sarah Nadolski to second base, freshman right fielder Kelsey Fedell lined a 3-2 pitch into the right field corner for a run-scoring triple.  One out later, senior third baseman Stephanie Smith hit a grounder to second base which allowed Fedell to score a critical insurance run.

In the bottom of the tenth, Dassner struck out the first two North Hills hitters, but Weigand kept the Indians' hopes alive with a single over shortstop. Dassner then got catcher Kelly Cummings to hit into a 5-3 groundout to end the game, giving North Allegheny its share of the title.  For the game, Dassner allowed six hits while striking out thirteen.  For the Indians, Weigand recorded twelve strikeouts while allowing four hits.

After starting 0-3 in section play, NA won their last seven section games to finish in a first place tie.  The win gave the Lady Tigers a final 7-3 section record and improved their overall mark to 14-4.  NA won their last six section games to earn a share of the title.  Shaler, by virtue of its 5-0 win at Fox Chapel, shares the title with the Tigers.

The Lady Tigers will host Class AAA Ambridge on Monday afternoon at the Senior High field in a 5:00 pm non-section contest.  The NA seniors will be honored before the game.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 4:45 pm.

LADY TIGERS RALLY TO BEAT SENECA VALLEY,
5-4, AND QUALIFY FOR PLAYOFFS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers had to rally twice in the last two innings to edge Seneca Valley, 5-4, on Thursday afternoon at the Senior High Field.  A pair of walks with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning forced in the tying and winning runs.  Junior 2B Lauren Vrabel had a double and a single for NA as the Lady Tigers had only five hits but were given ten walks by the Seneca pitchers.

In the top of the first inning with two outs, Seneca senior shortstop Aly Intihar doubled into the left center field gap with two outs.  After a walk to cleanup hitter senior catcher Tina Mangola, NA senior pitcher Aimee Dassner got the final out on a fly ball to freshman Kelsey Fedell in right field to end the inning.  In the bottom of the inning, junior CF Brittany Bennett led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by sophomore DP Leslie Vanderkolk.  Fedell singled to right field but Bennett was thrown out at the plate on a good throw by right fielder Dana Hughes.  It was scoreless after one inning.

Neither team scored until the Lady Tigers broke through in the bottom of the third.  Vrabel led off the inning with a base hit to right field.  After a sacrifice but by junior SS Mel Boozel moved Vrabel to second, Bennett bounced back to the mound.  Junior pitcher Lauren Pennell threw to third base to try to get a breaking Vrabel, but the ball was dropped.  Vanderkolk followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Vrabel with the game's first run.

The Lady Tigers continued to hold the 1-0 lead into the sixth inning although the Raiders threatened in both the fourth and fifth.  On both occasions, Dassner was able to pitch out of trouble.  In the top of the sixth, Seneca tied the score.  After a lead off double by sophomore DP Chelsea Leasure, sophomore 2B Jackie Mangola sacrificed her to third.  Mangola was safe at first when the ball was dropped.  Sophomore 1B Courtney Grootegoed followed with a single to score Leasure.  Dassner came back to get the next three outs to keep the score tied at 1-1.

Senior Laura Boselovic came in to pitch in the top of the seventh for the Lady Tigers.  After senior LF Julie Marlowe led off with a single to left field, Boselovic got Intihar on a fly ball to center.  Tina Mangola then hit a two-run homer over the center field fence to give SV a 3-1 lead.  Boselovic was able to stop any further scoring as the Raiders took a two-run lead into the bottom of the seventh.

The Lady Tigers came back quickly as sophomore pinch hitter Katie Polley led off with a base hit up the middle and Vrabel followed with a double to left center field.  Grootegoed came in to pitch for the Raiders and got Boozel on a ground ball with the runners holding.  A wild pitch allowed Polley to score, and Bennett followed with a base hit to right field to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.

In the top of the eight, Dassner came back in to pitch for NA.  After junior CF Liz Dorogy led off with a single to left field, Marlowe grounded into a force play.  Dassner got the second out on a force out at second with a good throw to Boozel.  Intihar followed with a base hit to right field.  With two outs, Tina Mangola came through again for the Raiders with a single into left field to give SV a 4-3 advantage going into the bottom of the eight.

After senior catcher Sam Goettman walked to lead off the inning, Dassner bunted into a force play with Goettman out on a contested play at second base.  Grootegoed then walked senior 3B Stephanie Smith and Polley to load the bases.  After Vrabel struck out for the second out, Grootegoed walked Boozel to force in the tying run and Bennett to force in Smith with the game winner.  The Lady Tigers scored two runs without a hit in the inning to win the game.

It was a strange ending to a highly competitive contest between two good teams.  Seneca outhit the Lady Tigers, 12-5, but the walks proved to be the difference.  The Raiders left thirteen runners on base with Dassner pitching tough in critical situations.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny; Sports Network selected Brittany Bennett as the Player of the Game.

The win improved the NA section record to 6-3 and moved them into a three-way tie for first place in the section with North Hills and Shaler.  The Lady Tigers will travel to North Hills this afternoon to meet the Indians with the section title on the line.  A win would give NA at least a share of the crown.  Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm at Scharmyn Park.  NA will host Ambridge on Monday afternoon on Senior Day with game time set for 4:45 pm.

FOX CHAPEL FALLS TO LADY TIGERS, 4-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Led by senior catcher Sam Goettman's three RBIs, the Lady Tigers shut out Fox Chapel, 4-0, at the Senior High field on Monday afternoon.  Goettman hit a two-run homer in the third inning to pace NA to the win.  Senior pitchers Aimee Dassner and Stephanie Smith held the Foxes to five hits in avenging an earlier loss at Fox Chapel.

In the top of the first, shortstop Carrie DeStout walked to begin the game and was sacrificed to second.  Dassner then retired the side on two strikeouts.  The Lady Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.  After senior left fielder Brittany Bennett singled to center field, sophomore DP Leslie Vanderkolk sacrificed her to second.  Vanderkolk reached safely when the bunt was misplayed.  Freshman Kelsey Fedell followed with another successful sacrifice bunt to advance both runners.  Goettman then hit a ground ball to second base that scored Bennett when the throw to the plate was late.  NA held a 1-0 lead after one inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Lady Tigers added two more runs.  Once again, Bennett led off with a single up the middle.  After Vanderkolk sacrificed her to second, Fedell grounded out to short.  Goettman then lined a shot over the right center field fence for a two-run home run to increase the NA margin to 3-0 after three innings.

Smith came in to pitch for NA in the top of the fourth and got the side in order.  In the top of the fifth, Fox Chapel pitcher Terri Zivic led off with a base hit to center field.  Right fielder Chrissy Ricci followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second with no outs.  Smith got out of the jam on a strike out and two ground balls back to the mound.  The Lady Tigers still led, 3-0, after four and one half innings.

Fox Chapel threatened again in the top of the sixth.  FC third baseman Jessika Smith lined a double into the left center field gap.  When Smith tried for third, she was thrown out on a good relay from senior CF Ali Morse to junior shortstop Mel Boozel to Bennett who came in to play third.  It was an important play because the next batter, center fielder Caroline Heffernan followed with another double into left center field.  Smith got the final out on a ground ball that she fielded and threw to first.

In the bottom of the sixth, NA added another insurance run.  After Goettman led off with a double to deep right field, sophomore Katie Polley came in as a courtesy runner.  Dassner then lined a single to center field that moved Polley to third.  Dassner tried to advance to second on the throw to the plate, but a good throw by FC catcher Alicia Miksic was in time to get Dassner for the first out.  Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Polley with the final NA run.  The Tigers took a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning.  Smith got the side in order, striking out two of the three final Fox Chapel batters.

It was a key win for the Lady Tigers as they won their fourth straight section contest.  NA got good pitching from both Dassner and Smith, along with consistent fielding to keep the Foxes off the board.  Offensively, Coach Rick Meister played the percentages as NA dropped down four successful sacrifice bunts with Vanderkolk accounting for three of them.  For her efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Sam Goettman as the Player of the Game.

The win improved the NA section record to 5-3 and moved them into a three-way tie for second place just one game behind first-place North Hills.  The Lady Tigers will host Seneca Valley tomorrow in a key section contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet with the pre-game show scheduled for 3:45 pm.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

LADY TIGER RALLY BEATS NORTH HILLS, 2-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the North Hills Indians, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Senior High field.  Senior left fielder Brittany Bennett singled home the winning run after sophomore PH Katie Polley drove in the tying tally.  Senior lefthander Aimee Dassner allowed only five hits and one run in earning her fifth victory of the year.

After Dassner struck out two of three to set North Hills down in order in the top of the first, the Lady Tigers threatened in the bottom of the inning.  Bennett led off with a looper to short right field that 2B Stephanie Wiegand got a glove on but could not hold with Bennett ending up at second base.  After one out, Indian 1B Nicole Tschannen made a good back handed stop of a ground ball hit by freshman RF Kelsey Fedell to get the out at first with Bennett advancing to third.  After senior catcher Sam Goettman was hit by a pitch, Dassner walked to load the bases.  NH junior pitcher Louanne Wiegand was then able to get a strike out to end the inning.

The Indians put two on base with two outs in the top of the second, but Dassner got the third out on a strike out to keep the game scoreless.  In the bottom of the third, the Lady Tigers threatened with two outs.  Fedell singled to right field and Goettman drew her a walk.  Again, Wiegand got out of the inning with the final out coming on a ground ball.

Both pitchers were in control until the top of the sixth inning.  With one out, CF Rachel Van Atta beat out a bunt single along the first base line.  Left fielder Emily Borio followed with another bunt single, this time along the third base line.  Wiegand then reached with an infield hit to load the bases.  Dassner struck out cleanup hitter shortstop Megan Hollyfield for the second out.  Catcher Kelly Cummings then lined a single to center field to score Van Atta with the game's first run.  On the play, Borio tried to score but was thrown out at the plate on a strong throw by senior center fielder Ali Morse.  North Hills led, 1-0, after five and one-half innings.

The Indians threatened again in the top of the seventh.  After Tschannen reached on an error, DP Ally Gross was hit by a pitch.  Third baseman Katie Reed then slapped a single to center field.  Once again, Morse fired a strike to catcher Goettman who tagged out pinch runner Kate Murgi for the first out of the inning.  Dassner then got the next two outs on a strike out and a foul pop fly to senior 3B Stephanie Smith.

In the bottom of the seventh with NA trailing 1-0, junior second baseman Lauren Vrabel led off with a hard ground single to right field.  Sophomore pinch-hitter Leslie Vanderkolk followed with a ground ball to the mound.  Wiegand's throw to first base was in time, but Tschannen pulled her foot off the base allowing Vanderkolk to reach safely. On the play, Vrabel moved to third.  After Vanderkolk stole second, Polley came through with a single over second base to tie the game at 1-1.  Bennett followed with the game winner, a hard single to left field, as the Lady Tigers pulled out a big 2-1 victory.

It was an outstanding effort by the Lady Tigers.  Dassner allowed only five hits while striking out nine and walking none.  In the field, Fedell made a good catch in foul territory in the fifth inning, and Morse cut down two runs at the plate to keep the Lady Tigers close.  For her efforts on the mound, however, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected pitcher Aimee Dassner as the Player of the Game.

The win moved the Lady Tigers right back into the middle of the section race as their section record improved to 4-3, just one game behind co-leaders North Hills and Seneca Valley.  The overall NA record improved to 11-4.  The Lady Tigers will host Fox Chapel this afternoon at the Senior High field.  The Foxes defeated NA, 2-0, earlier in the season.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS KNOCK OFF SHALER, 4-1

Playing just their second home game of the season, the Lady Tigers scored two runs in each of the first two innings on their way to a 4-1 victory over defending WPIAL Champion Shaler on Thursday afternoon.  Freshman RF Kelsey Fedell doubled home two runs, senior third baseman Stephanie Smith doubled home another, and senior catcher Sam Goettman had an RBI single to pace NA.  Senior lefthander Aimee Dassner allowed only two hits to earn the victory.

The Lady Tigers took control of the game in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, junior shortstop Mel Boozel walked.  After Fedell sacrificed Boozel to second, Goettman followed with a line drive single to left center field to score Boozel with the first run of the game with Goettman taking second on the throw to the plate.  After Dassner walked, Smith doubled to right field scoring pinch runner Katie Polley with the second run of the inning.  NA took a 2-0 lead into the second inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Lady Tigers added two more runs.  Senior first baseman Laura Boselovic led off with a single to left field.  after one out, senior LF Brittany Bennett drew a walk.  After Boozel was retired on a pop up on a bunt attempt, Fedell lined a double to straight away center field to score both runners and give NA a commanding 4-0 lead after two innings.

The Lady Tigers held the 4-0 lead into the seventh inning.  Catcher Megan Lynch led off with a single to left field and DP Jen Simile walked.  Shaler had two on and no outs.  Dassner then struck out opposing pitcher Heather Elstner for the first out of the inning.  Second baseman Melissa McQuade hit a line shot that was caught by Smith at third.  Smith's throw to first just missed getting Simile for the final out of the game.  Third baseman Sue Stanek followed with a base hit to left to score Lynch, but an alert throw to third base by left fielder Bennett kept the Shaler runners from advancing.  First baseman T. Huber followed with a base hit to left field, but Bennett threw a strike to catcher Goettman to get Simile at the plate and end the game.

It was good performance by Dassner who allowed only two hits while striking out six and walking only one.  The win improved Dassner's record to 4-2 on the season.

With the win, the Lady Tigers evened their section record at 3-3 as they moved into a fourth-place tie.  NA will host first-place North Hills tomorrow afternoon at the Senior High field.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 12:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS NEED ONLY THREE INNINGS TO
BEAT BUTLER, 15-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The only thing that stopped the Lady Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at the Senior High field was the mercy rule as NA hammered the Tornado, 15-0.  Senior catcher Sam Goettman had two hits, including a double, good for three RBIs while senior first baseman Aimee Dassner added a pair of hits and three runs batted in to pace the Lady Tigers.

In the top of the first inning, leadoff hitter Jenna Geibel singled up the middle for the Tornado.  With one out, DH Carly Ziegler lined a shot to senior 3B Stephanie Smith who made a good catch and doubled Geibel off first to end the inning.

The Lady Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the first.  After senior LF Brittany Bennett walked to lead off the inning, she stole second base.  With one out, freshman right fielder Kelsey Fedell singled to left field scoring  Bennett with the first run of the game.  Fedell went to second on the throw to the plate and to third on a wild pitch.  After Goettman walked, pinch runner Katie Polley stole second.  A wild pitch scored Fedell to make it 2-0.  Dassner followed with a single to left field to score Polley and give NA a 3-0 lead after one inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Lady Tigers added five more runs.  After seniors Smith and Ali Morse walked, Bennett was out on a long fly to center field.  Sophomore shortstop Julie Angeloni then reached base on an error to load the bases.  After Fedell grounded into a force plate that got Smith at home, it looked like Butler pitcher Stacy Reges would get out of the inning without giving up a run.  Goettman came through with a hard ground ball into left center field for a double that scored two runs.  Dassner lifted a single into left field to score two more runs and NA had a 7-0 lead.  Sophomore DP Leslie Vanderkolk followed with another single to left field to score Dassner as NA took an 8-0 lead after two innings.

In the bottom of the third, sophomore Karra White came in to pitch for Butler.  After Smith led off with a base hit to left field, Morse hit into a force play but the ball was dropped at second base.  Bennett beat up a slow roller in front of the plate to load the bases with no outs.  Angeloni walked to force in a run, and Fedell was hit by a pitch to bring in another run to make it a 10-0 game.  Goettman followed with a long drive off the center field fence.  Only one run scored on the hit as the runners had to hold to see if the ball would be caught.  Another run scored when the throw to the infield got away as the lead went to 12-0.  A wild pitch then scored Fedell from third base.  After Polley was hit by a pitch when batting for Dassner, pinch hitter Karen Baxter brought in another run on a ground ball.  Baxter was safe at first when the throw was wide.  With the Tigers needing only one run to invoke the mercy rule, junior 2B Lauren Vrabel was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Pinch hitter Sarah Nadolski then walked to force in the winning run.

It was a good all-around effort by the Lady Tigers against a young and inexperienced Butler team.  There were a lot of candidates for Player of the Game, but the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Sam Goettman for the honor.  Goettman had a double and a single, drove in three runs, and scored a run for the winning Lady Tigers.  Junior pitcher Kelly Baxter allowed only two hits in three innings to earn her third victory of the season.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved their section record to 2-3, the overall mark to 9-4.  NA will host defending WPIAL champion Shaler this afternoon at the Senior High field.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS BLAST BUTLER,
11-0, FOR FIRST SECTION WIN

The Lady Tiger bats took over on Thursday afternoon at Butler as they unleashed an eleven-run, ten-hit attack in an 11-0 victory over the Tornado.  Senior OF Brittany Bennett led the way with three hits, including a double.  Senior first baseman Aimee Dassner added a two-run double to back the one-hit pitching of junior Kelly Baxter.

The Tiger bats wasted no time as they struck for three runs in the top of the first.  Bennett led off with a single to center field and was sacrificed to second by sophomore SS Julie Angeloni.  When Butler failed to cover third, Bennett alertly advanced a base.  Freshman RF Kelsey Fedell followed with a run-scoring fielder's choice.  Senior catcher Sam Goettman drew a walk and sophomore Leslie Vanderkolk went in to run.  Senior third baseman Stephanie Smith followed with a single to left field moving Vanderkolk to second.  Dassner then drilled a double to left center field to score both runners and give NA a 3-0 lead after one half inning.

In the top of the second inning, junior 2B Lauren Vrabel was hit by a pitch to lead off.  Senior CF Ali Morse then singled to right field with Vrabel advancing to third.  On the throw to third, Morse took second.  Bennett followed with a double to left field scoring both runners but was thrown out attempting to take third on the play.  After Angeloni drew a walk, Fedell singled to left field.  Goettman and Smith both drew walks, forcing in Angeloni with the third run of the inning to give the Lady Tigers a 6-0 advantage after an inning and a half.

The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the third.  After Vrabel led off with a single to center, she moved to third on a base hit to right field by Morse.  Morse took second on the throw to third.  Bennett followed with a single to left driving in both runners.  The NA lead went to 8-0 going into the bottom of the third inning.

In the top of the fourth, NA put the game away with three more runs.  After Goettman walked, Smith singled.  With one out, sophomore DP Katie Polley singled to drive in Goettman.  Smith scored on a fielder's choice by Vrabel, who advanced all the way to second on a throwing error by the shortstop.  After a passed ball, Vrabel scored the final NA run on a sacrifice fly by Vanderkolk.

Baxter kept Butler under control allowing just a lead off single and walk in the first inning.  The game ended after five innings with the ten-run mercy rule ending play.

With the win, the Lady Tigers got back in the section race as they won their first section contest.  The overall NA record improved to 8-4 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will host North Hills on Monday afternoon at the newly improved Senior High field.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

a.  Section won-lost records of the tied teams will be compiled.
b.  The team with the best numerical section record among the tied teams will enter post-season play.
c.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

The two WPIAL finalists in Quad A will represent the WPIAL in PIAA inter-district play.

Postponed games must be played in order of postponement and scheduled on the first common available date.  Make up WPIAL section games must have preference over exhibition games, JV, and junior high games.  All  games postponed during the first half of the season must be rescheduled and played prior to the beginning of the second half.

During all WPIAL competition, any game that is interrupted by bad weather prior to becoming a legal game will be resumed at that point and concluded on the next available playing date.

The Ten Run/Fifteen Run Rule will be in effect for all WPIAL softball games.  It reads:
"If a team is ahead by ten runs or more at the end of five innings the game shall be terminated.  This also means if the home team is ahead by ten runs after four and one-half innings, the game will be terminated.  Thereafter, if one team should go ahead by ten runs, the same rule must apply.  If the visiting team should go ahead by ten runs after the game has become official, the home team will be permitted to bat in their half of the inning.  The same procedure applies at the end of three innings if a team is ahead by fifteen runs or more.
