LADY TIGERS DROP TOUGH 2-1 DECISION TO SENECA VALLEY

The Seneca Valley Raiders scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on to edge the Lady Tigers, 2-1, at Seneca on Wednesday afternoon.  Sophomore shortstop Julie Angeloni drove in the only NA run as the Lady Tigers left seven runners on base.  Senior pitcher Laura Boselovic allowed only five hits in pitching a complete game.

The Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  Senior CF Ali Morse led of with a single to center field and advanced to second when the throw to the infield was mishandled.  After a ground out by senior Brittany Bennett, Angeloni came through with a single to right field to score Morse with what would be the only NA run of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth with one out, consecutive singles by Chris Leasure and Courtney Grootegoed put runners on first and second.  With two outs, Liz Dorogy singled up the middle to score Leasure and tie the game at 1-1.  Dana Hughes then singled to right field to score Grootegoed with what proved to be the winning run.

The Lady Tigers had runners on base in six of the seven innings but could not get the key hit when needed.

The loss dropped the NA section record to 0-3 and their overall mark to 7-4 on the season.  The Tigers will be on the road again this afternoon as they play their twelfth straight game away from home.  NA will travel to Butler to meet the Tornado in a 4:00 pm section contest.  The Lady Tigers will finally return home to the Senior High field on Monday for their first home game due to field renovations.

LADY TIGERS SPLIT PAIR AT HOWLAND INVITATIONAL IN OHIO

After dropping a 5-1 decision to host Howland (OH), the Lady Tigers came back to defeat a strong Austintown Fitch squad, 7-5, to earn a split in the Howland Invitational on Saturday afternoon.  In the first game, senior LF Brittany Bennett had three hits to pace NA.  In the nightcap, a seventh inning home run by freshman Kelsey Fedell was the game winner.

In the first game, junior Kelly Baxter pitched well in her first varsity start, but the Howland Tigers put together a three-run second inning to key the victory.  Bennett had the only three NA hits for the Lady Tigers who could score just once in the contest.  In the top of the sixth, senior catcher Sam Goettman reached second on a throwing error.  Senior third baseman Sarah Nadolski singled Goettman home for the NA run.

The Lady Tigers bounced back in the second game behind the pitching of senior Stephanie Smith and some timely hitting.  NA started quickly with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.  After Bennett led off with a walk, sophomore LF Leslie Vanderkolk was hit by a pitch.  With junior Lauren Vrabel running for Vanderkolk, both runners moved up on a wild pitch.  Goettman followed with a base hit to score both runners.  After sophomore 2B Katie Polley walked, Fedell laid down a perfect bunt.  An errant throw by the Fitch catcher allowed junior Melanie Boozel, pinch running for Goettman, to score with Polley moving to third and Fedell to second.  After senior CF Ali Morse drew a walk, Smith hit a long sacrifice fly to center field to score Polley.  NA held a 4-0 lead after one inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Lady Tigers increased the lead to 5-0.  After Bennett doubled, Vanderkolk moved her to third with a base hit.  Senior 1B Aimee Dassner drove in Bennett with a ground ball fielder's choice.  Fitch stayed close in the contest scoring three in the third and finally tying the game in the top of the seventh.  In the bottom of the seventh, Goettman hit a one-out single.  With Boozel running for Goettman, Fedell hit a three-one pitch over the left-center field fence to send NA home with a hard-earned 7-5 victory.

According to Head Coach Rick Meister, "We played well!"  It was a good day for NA as fifteen players saw action in the double header.  With the split, the Lady Tigers head to Florida with a record of 3-2 on the season.  NA will play four games in Cocoa Beach beginning with a 3:00 pm contest against West Windson-Plainsboro (NJ) on Monday afternoon.

FOX CHAPEL SHUTS DOWN LADY TIGERS, 2-0

Box Score

The Lady Tigers managed only one hit against Fox Chapel pitcher Terri Zivic at Fox Chapel on Thursday afternoon as the Foxes edged NA, 2-0.  Senior pitcher Aimee Dassner singled to lead off in the first inning, but Zivic did not allow another hit for the remainder of the game.

Dassner kept the Foxes in check over the first five innings.  In the bottom of the sixth, Jess Smith homered over the left field fence to put Fox Chapel ahead 1-0.  Consecutive singles by Jen Heffren, Stephanie Cristina, and Zivic gave the Foxes an insurance run as they took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning.

Zivic controlled the NA bats throughout the game and only an outfield error prevented the FC pitcher from retiring 21 consecutive NA batters after the opening base hit.  Zivic struck eleven and walked none to earn the victory.

The loss dropped the NA section record to 0-1, the overall mark to 2-1.  The Lady Tigers are scheduled to travel to Butler today to meet the Golden Tornado in a 4:00 pm section contest, weather permitting.

LADY TIGERS USE LONG BALL TO DOWN CONNELLSVILLE, 6-1

by Coach Rick Meister

The Lady Tigers raised their record to 2-0 with a solid 6-1 victory at Connellsville on Thursday afternoon.  Pacing the Tigers offensively were freshman right fielder Kelsey Fedell, who hit a first-inning solo home run, and senior catcher Sam Goettman, who capped the NA scoring with a two-run home run in the seventh.  Winning pitcher Aimee Dassner picked up her second victory of the season, scattering four hits while striking out seven and walking one.

Following Fedell's first inning shot over the left field fence, the Tigers next scored in the fourth inning.  Senior third baseman Stephanie Smith hit a single into left field followed by junior second baseman Lauren Vrabel's sacrifice bunt, which moved Smith to second.  When sophomore left fielder Julie Angeloni's grounder up the middle was mishandled by Connellsville pitcher Alexis Dolde, Angeloni was safe at first while Smith moved to third.  Following an Angeloni steal of second base, junior shortstop Melanie Boozel singled to left field to score Smith and send Angeloni to third.  After Boozel stole second base, senior center fielder Ali Morse followed with a hard short through short stop to score both Angeloni and Boozel to give NA a 4-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Connellsville narrowed the margin to 4-1 when 3B Lindsay O'Donnell hit a two-out triple into the right field corner.  First baseman Rachel Means followed with a single into center field to score O'Donnell with the only Falcons' run.

NA put it out of reach in the top of the seventh.  Boozel hit a one-out single to left field, took second on a passed ball, and trotted home ahead of Goettman's drive over the right center field fence.

For the Lady Tigers, all fourteen healthy players saw action in a team victory.  NA will be in action again on Wednesday when they host Fox Chapel in the section opener at the Senior High softball field.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS TRIP MONTOUR, 3-1, IN OPENER

Box Score

Senior Brittany Bennett had three hits, including a double, to lead the Lady Tigers to a 3-1 victory at Montour on Monday afternoon.  Senior lefthander Aimee Dassner allowed only four hits in earning the victory.

After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers scored twice in the top of the second.  With two outs, junior shortstop Melanie Boozel drew a walk.  On the next pitch, senior 1B Laura Boselovic was hit by a pitch.  Senior center fielder Ali Morse followed with a line drive into right center field to drive in Boozel and give NA a 1-0 lead.  Dassner then hit a hard ground ball to third that was fielded cleanly, but the throw to first was high allowing Boselovic to score.  After a inning and a half, the Lady Tigers held a 2-0 advantage.

Neither team scored again until the fourth inning.  Montour got on the board when Montour pitcher CC Capp singled up the middle and went to second on a fielder's choice.  With two out, Boozel made a good play in the hole at short, but the Montour runner was ruled safe at first allowing Capp to score what would be the only run of the game for the Spartans.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.  Bennett led off with a double into the left-field corner.  With two outs, senior catcher Sam Goettman blooped a single over shortstop, and Bennett beat the throw to the plate on a close play.  Montour failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, and the Lady Tigers had their first victory of the season.

Dassner pitched very effectively, striking out eight, walking none, and allowing just four singles.  The Tigers record went to 1-0 while Montour, the #3 ranked team in Class AAA, dropped to 0-1.  C>CThe Lady Tigers will travel to Connellsville on Thursday afternoon to meet the Falcons in a non-section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
