The Tigers rolled up 348 yards rushing led by senior tailback Karl DeCiantis who ran for 182 and a touchdown as they routed previously unbeaten Shaler, 27-7, before a huge Homecoming crowd at Newman Stadium on Friday night.  Senior QB Geoff Greco rambled for a pair of scores as the Tigers won their seventh straight game without a loss.

Junior Jackson Boyd returned the opening kickoff ten yards to the NA 36.  The Tiger ground game started quickly with DeCiantis gaining eight on first down and another four off the right side for a first down at the NA 49.  A reverse to junior WR Brian Austin picked up eleven more to the Shaler 40.  DeCiantis then broke through the middle for a gain of 30 to the Shaler 10.  The Titan defense stiffened holding NA to just two yards in three plays.  Senior Justin Facer came in and kicked a 26-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead just 3:04 into the game.  After Greco’s kickoff went into the end zone, his sixth of the year, Shaler began at the 20.  Three plays gained only four yards, and Robert Holtz punted to Greco who returned it fourteen yards to the Shaler 46.  It took the Tigers only four plays to score.  After DeCiantis ran the middle for 14 to the Shaler 32, senior FB Corey Watts ripped off another 16 to the Titan 16.  DeCiantis picked up five more to the 11 and an offsides penalty against the Titans took it to the six.  Greco then ran around left end and went in untouched for the score.  Facer added the point as NA took a 10-0 lead with 5:37 remaining in the quarter.  After Titan RB Dan Wikkowski returned the kickoff 16 yards to the Shaler 23, the Titans went on their only scoring drive of the game.  A pass from QB R.J. Palso to SE Drew Stanny gained five on first down, and Palso followed with a keeper to pick up a first down at the Titan 38.  On third and short, a pitchout to sophomore WB Jesse DellaValle gained 18 around left end to give Shaler a first down at the NA 35.  On second and ten, Wirkowski ran right end for fifteen more and a first down at the NA 20.  Three plays picked up a first down at the Tiger 9.  A pass interference call against the Tigers in the end zone moved the ball to the NA 4.  Fullback Mike Francis took it in to complete a 73-yard drive in eleven plays.  Stanny’s extra point cut the lead to 10-7 with 0:41 seconds left in the quarter.  After the Tigers took the ball at the NA 35 when the kickoff went out of bounds, DeCiantis ran for seven yards as the quarter ended with Tigers holding a 10-7 advantage.

On the first play of the second quarter, Corey Watts broke through the middle for a gain of 30 yards to the Shaler 28.  Three plays left the Tigers with a fourth and inches at the 18.  Greco moved the sticks on a quarterback sneak to the 17.  After DeCiantis took it to the Shaler 8, Greco ran around left end for his second touchdown of the game.  Facer again added the point as the Tiger took a 17-7 lead with 8:28 left in the half.  After DellaValle returned the kickoff to the Shaler 26, the Tiger defense held the Titans to another three and out.  On the punt by Holtz, Austin faked a reverse to Greco and returned the kick 20 yards to the Shaler 40.  On first down, junior QB Mike Locke scrambled for 15 yards and a first down at the Titan 25.  After senior FB Zach Watts got five and DeCiantis ran for three more to the 17, Greco ran left for a first down at the 12.  The Tigers were able to gain only two yards in three plays, and Facer came in to kick his second field goal of the game, this time from 27 yards, as NA extended the lead to 20-7 with 3:13 remaining.  After another Shaler three and out, Holtz punted out of bounds at the 50 and the Tigers took over with 1:27 still left on the clock.  A scramble by Locke for seven and a quarterback draw by the NA junior gave the Tigers a first down at the Shaler 37.  After two incomplete passes, Locke hit Austin for 14 and a first down at the 23.  After two more incomplete passes, one a narrow miss to Austin in the end zone, DeCiantis ran for five to the 22.  Facer attempted a field goal from 35 yards that fell just short as time ran out.  The Tigers took a commanding 20-7 advantage to the intermission.

After DellaValle returned the second half kickoff 20 yards to the Shaler 27, two running plays by Wirkowski gained seven yards.  An offsides penalty against NA gave Shaler at first down at the 32.  Three more runs lost a yard, and Holtz punted and rolled the ball all the way to the NA 8, a punt of 54 yards including the roll.  On second and nine, Greco ran around right end for 13 and a first down at the 21.  On third and four, Greco picked up nine more around the left end and another first down at the Tiger 39.  After Shaler was offsides, Zach Watts ran up the middle for six and a first down at the 50.  It was Greco again around end for 12 more to the Shaler 38.  After a Shaler timeout, DeCiantis rambled for 17 and a first down at the Titan 21.  On the next play, DeCiantis ripped through the middle for 21 yards and his thirteenth touchdown of the season.  Facer once again added the point to give the Tigers a 27-7 lead.  It was a 92-yard drive on 9 plays.  After Shaler was penalized for holding on the kickoff return, the Titans started a drive from their own 19.  A fifteen yard unsportsmanlike call against the Tigers moved the ball to the Shaler 34.  Wirkowski ran the right side for gains of 11 and 14 to give Shaler a first down at the NA 39.  Junior DE Wes Henderson then broke through to nail Wirkowski for a loss of two.  Two more runs gained four yards, and an incomplete fourth down pass gave the ball back to the Tigers at their 35.  On a second and ten, DeCiantis ran the left side for 14 yards and a first down at the NA 49 as the third quarter ended.  The Tigers took a 27-7 advantage into the final period.

After an incomplete pass and a holding call against the Tigers to open the fourth quarter, DeCiantis gained fourteen back to the Shaler 48.  On the next play, the Tigers fumbled and Pat Schaefer recovered for the Titans at the Shaler 47.  Shaler began a drive that saw the Titans commit four penalties, an unsportsmanlike and three holding calls.  A run by Palso got a first down at the NA 44, but a long completion to DellaValle was wiped out by holding that moved the ball back to the Shaler 42.  Another gain on a screen pass was negated by holding with the ball put back to the Titan 44.  DeCiantis then broke through to sack Palso for a loss of six to the 38.  On fourth and long, Palso hit DellaValle down the left sideline for a first down at the NA 24.   On a second and six, another Shaler holding penalty pushed the ball back to the Tiger 30.    After a reverse to DellaValle lost four yards, offsetting pass interference penalties set up a replay of the down.  A pass from Palso to Wirkoski gained nine to the NA 25.  On fourth and ten, a pitchout to Dan McGinley gained only eight, and the Tigers took over at their 17.  A person foul against Shaler gave NA a first down at the NA 43.  The Tiger reserves then took over and ran out the clock.  Junior HB Jorden Kraus gained two, junior FB Jared Congedo picked up seven more, and Locke picked up the first down on a QB sneak to the Shaler 45.  After Congedo gained four, sophomore QB Justin Brozick was hit for a loss of five.  Congedo ran the middle for 14 and another first down to the Shaler 32.  Brozick then took two knees as time ran out.  The Tigers were alone in first place with a 27-7 victory.

It was an impressive win for the Tigers against a good Shaler team.  NA controlled the ball on the ground thanks to tough running led by DeCiantis who gained 182 yards in 20 carries.  Greco added 56 in eight rushes with Corey Watts picking up 46 in just two runs.  Credit goes to the NA offensive line of senior center Scott Linkowski, senior guards Austin Fedell and Mike Passodelis, and junior tackles Ryan Schlieper and Mike Vuono.  The NA defense also stepped up holding Shaler to just 87 rushing yards on 39 carries.  Titan running back Dan Wirkowski was held in check with just 66 yard in 15 rushes.  For his effort in leading the NA ground attack, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Karl DeCiantis as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 3-0 in the conference and clinched a playoff spot.  NA will travel to Butler on Friday night to meet the winless Tornado in a Northern Five Conference contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:10 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
