TIGERS CRUSH WOODLAND HILLS, 47-0, FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

The Tigers rolled over Woodland Hills, 47-0, on Friday night at Newman Stadium for their third consecutive victory without a loss.  Senior Geoff Greco ran for two touchdowns and scored a third on a 14-yard pass from junior QB Mike Locke.  NA built a 26-0 lead at halftime and cruised to the easy victory.  Woodland Hills lost seven fumbles to aid the Tiger cause.  Senior halfback Carl DeCiantis scored his sixth touchdown of the year on the first drive of the game.

Greco returned the opening kickoff 45 yards to the NA 46 to give the Tigers good field position for the opening drive.  Greco then ran left for 38 yards and a first down at the Wolverine 16.  The Tiger senior ran left again for four more to the 12.  DeCiantis then took over picking up six to the six and then maintaining his balance on a six-yard scoring run.  The kick was wide, but the Tigers had taken a 6-0 lead on a 54-yard drive in six plays.  The Tigers covered the kickoff well tackling WH return man Ryan Hart at the 12.  The Wolverines got only one yard in three plays forcing Cameron Contreras to punt to Greco who returned it three yards to the NA 47.  Three plays picked up only four yards and Greco punted and got a good roll to the WH 2 where it was downed by senior safety Austin Amos.  Once again, the Wolverines could not move the ball and Contreras punted to Greco who brought it back fourteen yards to the WH 33.  NA went on a nine-play scoring drive with DeCiantis carrying the ball on seven consecutive plays.  DeCiantis moved the ball all the way to the WH 1.  On fourth and 1, Greco was able to push the ball across the goal line to give NA a 12-0 lead with just 51 seconds left in the quarter.  DeCiantis was stopped short of the goal line on the two-point conversion.  After Hart returned the kickoff to the Wolverine 28, Woodland Hills fumbled on the first play and Amos fell on the loose ball at the 27.  On second down, Greco ran the right side for five yards as the quarter ended.  The Tigers held a 12-0 advantage going into the second stanza.

On fourth and four from the WH 21, Locke hit senior WR Curtis Belcastro for 17 yards and a first and goal at the Wolverine 4.  Greco ran the left side and went in untouched as the Tiger lead went to 18-0.  Junior Nick Jovonovich came in and added the point to make it 19-0 just 1:12 into the second quarter.  The Wolverines were able to pick up a pair of first downs after Hart brought the kickoff out to the WH 33.  Junior QB Joe Shaffo hit WR Mike Lee for six and the first Woody High first down at the Wolverine 46.  On second and six, Shaffo threw to WR Kalieb Hines for 12 more to the Tiger 38.  On the next play, Shaffer found Lee open again for a first down at the NA 25.  An unsportsmanlike penalty against the Tigers moved the ball to the NA 12.  After a loss of one, the Wolverines fumbled again and senior DE Scott Linkowski recovered for the Tigers NA 26. On third and three, Greco ran the left side for ten yards and a first down at the Tiger 44.  Three plays then gained only one net yard and Greco punted.  Hart dropped the punt at the WH 15 and junior Jorden Kraus recovered at the Wolverine 16.  After freshman HB Alex Papson gained two, Locke found Greco open in the corner of the end zone for another score.  Jovonovich added the point and the Tiger lead went to 26-0 with 1:12 left in the half.  Woodland Hills picked up a pair of first downs and moved to the NA 38, but time ran out.  The Tigers

On the second half kickoff, Greco drilled the ball into the end zone for an automatic touchback.  On third down, the Tigers were called for holding to give WH a first down at the Wolverine 32.  After sophomore QB John Yezovich hit Lee for a gain of nine, the Wolverines fumbled again with senior LB Alex Calder falling on the ball at the WH 39.  After a holding call moved the ball back to the 47, Locke threw to senior TE Mike Fuhrman for a gain of 29 and a first down at the Wolverine 18.  On first down, senior FB Corey Watts gained four.  On the next play, junior Kurt Devlin ran it for nine more on an inside reverse to give the Tigers a first and goal at the 5.  On second and goal from the three, Papson took it in for his first varsity touchdown.  Jovonovich again converted as the lead went to 33-0.  Things got worse for the Wolverines as Brian Sanders muffed the kickoff and recovered at the WH 14.  A holding call against the Wolverines put the ball back to the 10.  A procedure call moved it back five more to the 5.  Junior RB Edgar Folks gained fourteen but two more plays picked up only one more yard.  Contreras then punted with the ball rolling dead at the NA 49.  Three penalties stopped the NA drive and Greco punted out of bounds at the WH 44.  On second and fourteen, Yezovich was hit attempting to pass and the Tigers recovered yet another fumble, this time at the WH 30.  Frustration began to set in as the Wolverines picked up an unsportsmanlike penalty that gave NA a first down at the 20.  After additional offsetting unsportsmanlike penalties, Papson ran the left side for five and added two more to the WH 13 as the third quarter ended.  The Tigers held a comfortable 33-0 lead going into the final period.

After an illegal procedure call moved the ball back to the Wolverine 18, Locke threw to senior WR Dan Hoover who made a leaping catch at the WH 7 for a gain of 11 and a first down.  On the first play, junior FB Jared Congedo took it into the end zone for his first varsity touchdown.  With the conversion by Jovonovich, the score went to 40-0 and the mercy rule kicked in.  After Hart returned the kickoff to the 30, Folks lost three.  On the next play, the Wolverines fumbled for the seventh time as junior Brad Comport scooped up the loose ball and ran it 22 yards into the end zone.  Jovonovich again added the point as the Tiger lead ballooned to 47-0 with 10:33 still remaining.  With the clock running, both coaches sent in a number of substitutes to play out the time left.  After the kickoff was returned to the 33, three plays gained on seven yards and Contreras punted out of bounds at the NA 33.  The Tiger reserves then mounted a drive exclusively on the ground.  Sophomore HB Jon Lowery did most of the work carrying the ball five times for 21 yards with Congedo adding ten more on three carries as NA gained a pair of first downs while moving the ball to the WH 48.  On fourth and short, junior Mike Zelik punted with WH returning the ball to the 13.  After one running play, the clock ran out as the Tigers picked up an impressive 47-0 victory.

The Tigers dominated the stat sheet with 13 first downs to WH’s 7.  NA rushed for 203 yards while holding the Wolverines to just 45.  In total yards, NA gained 281 to the Wolverines’ 98.  The big stat, however, was in the fumble column where the Wolverines lost all seven fumbles they committed.  For his efforts on the offensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Geoff Greco as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their season record to 3-0 in non-conference contest.  NA will travel to Upper St. Clair on Thursday night to meet the defending PIAA and WPIAL champion Panthers.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm as the game is being televised live by the Fox Sports Network.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet with the pre-game show set for 6:40 pm.
