TIGER RALLY NOT ENOUGH AS
MT. LEBANON WINS, 3-2

The Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils built a 3-0 lead at Mt. Lebanon Stadium on Saturday night and held off a furious NA rally for a 3-2 victory.  Junior Andrew Barbin scored a pair of goals in the last five minutes of the game to bring the Tigers close.  Erin Colco scored twice for Lebo in the first half as the Blue Devils took a 2-0 advantage to the intermission.  Mt. Lebanon outshot NA, 8-6, in the half.

In the second half, Matt Witchell gave Lebo a 3-0 lead with a goal at the 31:23 mark.  Late in the game, however, the Tigers scored two quick goals to cut the lead to one.  Junior Brian Jewell set up Barbin at the 5:14 mark to make it a 3-1 game.  Barbin scored again a minute later on an assist by sophomore Ken Nakajima as the Tigers closed to within 3-2.  Mt. Lebanon was able to hold on and keep NA from getting the equalizer as they posted the 3-2 victory.

Statistically, Lebo outshot 8-6 in the first half, with both teams attempting six shots at goal in the second.  Mt. Lebanon had four corner kicks to one for NA.

The non-section loss dropped the NA overall record to 2-4 on the season.  The Tigers will host neighborhood rival Shaler on Tuesday night at Newman Stadium.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:30pm.  The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 pm.

CROKER'S GOAL GIVES NA 3-2 VICTORY OVER SENECA VALLEY

The Tigers came from behind to defeat the Seneca Valley Raiders, 3-2, in a physical contest at Seneca on Thursday night. Senior forward Ryan Croker's second goal of the game midway through the second half proved to be the game winner.  Senior forward Kevin Kearney had tied the game minutes earlier.

Neither team was able to score in the first half.  Seneca Valley posted six shots while the Tigers had five as the teams went to the intermission with a scoreless tie.

The Raiders jumped on top just 18 seconds into the second half when Shane Kunder found the net.  Croker came back to tie the game on a penalty kick three minutes later.  Seneca reclaimed the lead at the 32:41 mark on Steve Staniland's goal from 40 yards out.  The Tigers came back again to tie the game a minute later when senior Justin Runkel set up Kearney.  Croker put NA on top for good with his second goal at the 26:53 mark with Runkel again assisting.

Both teams had eight shots in the second half.  For the game, Seneca ended up with 14, NA 13.  Late in the game, things got physical between the two neighborhood rivals.  Three red cards were give, two to Seneca Valley.

The win evened the NA section record at 2-2 with the overall mark improving to 2-4 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to Mt. Lebanon on tomorrow night for a 7:30 pm non-section contest.

The Hampton Talbots scored the first four goals of the game last night and held on for a 4-1 victory over the Tigers.   Ross Hawat gave the Talbots a 1-0 advantage at the 30:19 mark.  With 10:16 left in the half, Hawat scored again as Hampton opened a 2-0 lead at the intermission.  Both teams had six shots at goal in the half.

In the second half, Greg Conner scored early in the second half at the 38:23 mark to extend the margin to 3-0.  With 30:48 remaining, Tim Ubinger hit the net with the fourth Talbot goal.  The Tigers came back to score with 15:46 remaining when senior Justin Runkel scored on an assist from Kevin Kearney.  NA outshot Hampton, 5-4, in the half and held an 11-10 margin for the game.

TIGERS DROP 1-0 DECISION TO AMBRIDGE

The Tigers were edged by the Ambridge Bridgers, 1-0, in a non-section game on Saturday night at Newman Stadium.  Senior Dawson Lindauere scored for Ambridge at the 7:05 mark of the first half, and the Bridgers were content to stay back and play defense for the remainder of the contest.

The Tigers outshot the Bridgers, 16-4, but could not beat junior goalkeeper Greg Blum who made several great saves.  NA had two corner kicks while the Bridgers did not record any.  The Tigers turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting Ambridge, 9-0, but the Bridgers held on to pick up the victory.

The loss dropped the NA overall record to 1-3.  The Tigers will be back in action again on Tuesday night when they host the Hampton Talbots in a section contest at Newman Stadium.  Game time is scheduled for 7:45 pm.

TIGERS EDGE PINE-RICHLAND, 2-1, BEHIND RUNKEL'S GOALS

Senior Justin Runkel scored twice in the second half as the Tigers came from behind to defeat Pine-Richland, 2-1, at Pine-Richland on Thursday night.  Senior Ryan Croker assisted on both NA goals.

The Tigers dominated the first half, outshooting the Rams 11-4, but neither team could score.  Pine-Richland broke through to score early in the second half when Matt Hickey made it 1-0 at the 36:10 mark.  The Rams held the lead for much of the half, but the Tigers tied the scored with 14:56 remaining in the second half.  Runkel scored on a hard, low shot to make it a 1-1 contest.  With just 7:34 left, Croker gave Runkel a beautiful feed and the Tiger senior headed it into the net for the game winner.  The Tigers outshot P-R, 7-3, in the second half.  Each team had a corner kick.

It was a good win for the Tigers who did not beat the Rams last season.  The win evened the NA section record at 1-1 and improved their overall mark to 1-2.  The win was the first for first-year Tiger coach Bobby Vosmaer.  The Tigers will host Ambridge in a non-section game on Saturday night at  Newman Stadium with game time set for 7:30 pm.

BUTLER EDGES NA, 2-1, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

In a tough defensive struggle, the Butler Golden Tornado scored early in the second overtime to defeat the Tigers, 2-1, in the section opener at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Junior forward Wade Grubbs broke through the Tiger defense and rolled the ball just inside the left post to give the Tornado the victory.

Neither team was able to generate much offense early in the game.  In the tenth minute, junior midfielder Ben Horner stole an NA clearing pass and was able to score from just inside the 18 to give Butler at 1-0 lead at the 30:44 mark.  Tiger forward Keith Kearney had three chances to equalize in the next eight minutes.  With 28:03 left in the half, Butler GK Tim Duffy made a diving stop to rob Kearney.  After Horner forced NA goalkeeper Ian McFarlane to make a good save, Kearney gave a great effort to win the ball in the box, but his shot went over the goal with 23:52 left.  Less than a minute later, Kearney took a feed from senior Justin Runkel but his hard shot hit the football upright.  Junior Brian Jewell had an opportunity from just inside the 18 but his shot went high and wide left of the goal at the 15:48 mark.

Junior Doug Moran broke free at midfield later in the half and only a  diving tackle by freshman MF Adam Sharpnack stopped a clean breakaway.  Sophomore Taylor Blose forced McFarlane to make another good save minutes later.  Kearney got another chance from 22 yards late in the half but again his shot went wide.  The Tigers finally broke through with just 25 seconds left on the first half clock.  Runkel took a pass from Sharpnack down the right side and beat Duffy cleanly with a hard shot to the right corner of the net.  The Tigers and Tornado went to the intermission tied at 1-1.

Early in the second half, Butler had several chances to take the lead.  Just 39 seconds into the half, McFarlane had to make a tough catch on a Butler corner kick.  Five minutes later, Horner headed the ball over the goal from right in front.  In the seventh minute, McFarlane made another good save on Horner, and Grubbs shot the ball over the goal.  The Tigers regrouped, however, forcing Duffy to come up big with 29:50 remaining.  Junior MF Chet Gapczynski came close from 30 yards out on a direct kick but the shot went wide just minutes later.

From the midway point in the second half, both teams went into a defensive mode.  The Tigers did have a couple of chances, however.  NA missed a golden opportunity at the 7:03 mark when Kearney set up senior Elliott Burdwood right in front of the goal, but his header misfired and went wide.  Senior forward Ryan Croker was stopped with 1:30 remaining, and the game went to overtime with the teams tied at 1-1.

In the first overtime period, each team had an opportunity for the win.  Runkel came free from about 15 yards out but his shot was blocked just wide of the Butler net at the 7:17 mark.  With 4:02 remaining, McFarlane was forced to tip the ball over the goal to keep the score tied.   Late in the overtime, McFarlane had to again leap high to push the ball over the net on a Butler corner kick attempt.  Neither team could score, however, and the game went to the second overtime.  Butler was able to get the first good scoring chance in the second extra period, and Grubbs made the best of it with the game winner.

It was a good effort by the Tigers, and they had chances to win.  Unfortunately, the combination of Butler GK Duffy and some missed shots did the Tigers in as Butler was able to pick up the victory in the section opener.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Justin Runkel as the Player of the Match.

The Tigers will be back in action again tomorrow when they travel to Pine-Richland for a section match.  The Rams were defeated by Seneca Valley, 3-1, last night in their section opener.  Game time has been changed to 7:30 for the varsity game and 6:00 pm for the JV contest.
