MT. LEBANON UPSETS LADY TIGERS, 1-0, IN WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers outplayed Mt. Lebanon on Fox Chapel on Thursday afternoon but could not score in regulation time.  In the first overtime period, Mt. Lebanon's Abby Uddstrom scored on a breakaway with 4:41 remaining to give Lebo their first WPIAL title.  NA had numerous opportunities but were unable to finish allowing the Blue Devils a chance to win.

In the first half, neither team was able to get a scoring chance in the early going.  Junior Strealy Clark had an opportunity at the 21:29 mark but her shot was kicked out by Lebo goalie Julie Drapala.  Mt. Lebanon countered when Taylor Anderson broke into the circle, but NA defender junior Erin McGee made a good play to block the shot with 19:31 left in the half.  The Lady Tigers then pressured the Blue Devils and were rewarded with a series of penalty corners.  With 16:10 remaining, the shot by senior Taylor Gaspar off the stick stop was blocked by the Lebo defense.  Just moments later, Gaspar shot the ball into the goal, but it was from outside the circle and did not count.  The Lady Tigers had their best chance with 15:35 remaining in the half when Gaspar was stopped by Drapala, and junior Steph Ertzberger shot the rebound wide.  Later in the period, Ertzberger made a good move to get around the defense along the goal line, but her shot was blocked over the goal line.  NA kept the pressure on but junior Amy Antimarino shot wide right from close in at the 7:09 mark.  Mt. Lebanon came back on a counter attack, but Conwell made a good play to beat Lebo's Marian Pearson to the ball. with 3:41 remaining.  NA got yet another penalty corner with seconds remaining but could not convert.  The teams went to the intermission with the game still scoreless.

Mt. Lebanon came out and pressured NA early in the second half but could not get any good scoring attempts.  After an NA time out with 21:15 left in the half, the Lady Tigers regrouped and once again attacked the Lebo goal.  With 20:40 remaining, Antimarino earned another penalty corner with a good centering pass but again NA failed to convert.  Senior Kelly White drove a hard shot that hit the left goal post with 14:46 remaining, and Strealy Clark followed with a hard shot that went wide left just seconds later.  Mt. Lebanon came back with their best scoring chance at the 8:55 mark.  On a penalty corner, Anderson had two good chances that Conwell stopped and the third shot went wide.  Sophomore Megan Hoot missed the left corner on a turning shot with 7:06 remaining as the Lady Tigers continued to force the play.  Finally, Lebo had a chance to end the contest in regulation time when they broke out on a 4 on none break with seconds remaining.  Conwell came out to challenge the Lebo shooters and made a great save to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Lebo got the first opportunity and forced a PC at the 10:32 mark.  The NA defense blocked the attempt, and Ertzberger came back with a good chance just 45 seconds later but her shot went wide.  With the teams playing with just seven on a side, Ertzberger broke free on a long run over over sixty yards, but her shot missed just wide to the left of the goal.  Finally, Lebo was able to send Uddstrom free on a breakway, and she ended the game with a hard shot that beat Conwell to give Lebo the title.

It was a great effort by the Lady Tigers who outplayed Mt. Lebanon for most  of the contest.  The Lady Tigers posted 11 penalty corners to just one for Lebo during regulation time.  NA had seven PCs during the second half alone.  The Lebo defense played well and times, but the Lady Tigers had great chances but could not finish.  When the game was on the line, Erin Conwell made some outstanding saves on Lebo's few scoring opportunities to keep NA alive.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Erin Conwell as the Player of the Game.

It was a tough loss for the defending champion Lady Tigers.  NA had won 13 straight without a loss to WPIAL opponents, including a 3-0 victory over Lebo just two weeks ago.  The Lady Tigers outscored their opponents, 43-4, on the season.

Congratulations to Coach Sue Phillips and the Lady Tigers for another outstanding season!

HEMPFIELD NO MATCH FOR LADY TIGERS
IN 6-0 SHUTOUT

To listen to a relay of the game, click here!

Junior Steph Ertzberger scored three goals for the second time this season against Hempfield as the Lady Tigers defeated the Spartans, 6-0, at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Junior Amy Antimarino, senior Elise Moore, and sophomore Megan Hoot also scored for the winning Lady Tigers.  NA dominated the game throughout and had numerous scoring opportunities.

In the first half, the Lady Tigers put pressure on the Hempfield defense from the outset.  With just 2:36 gone, NA was given the first of twelve penalty corners.  After senior Taylor Gaspar got off a hard shot off a stick stop, Ertzberger was there to put the rebound past Hempfield goalie Jackie Novak to give NA a 1-0 advantage.  Less than two minutes later, Ertzberger converted again on a rebound to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.  Ertzberger had two additional chances but could not add her third goal in the first half.  Just thirty seconds later, the Tiger junior shot wide of the Hempfield goal, and Novak stopped her on another corner at the 19:15 mark.  NA continued to pressure the Hempfield goal and only good play by Novak kept the game close.  Senior Lauren Umble was stopped by Novak with 16:27 remaining before Antimarino was able to score a little over four minutes later to increase the margin to 3-0.  Antimarino had another opportunity with 10:20 left in the half, but Novak made a great kick save on her hard shot.  In the final fifteen seconds of the half, Gaspar and senior Kate Testa fired three consecutive shots from right in front of the net, but Novak stopped them all as the half ended with NA on top, 3-0.

The second half was more of the same.  NA continued to pile up penalty corners.  Just 4:12 into the half, Gaspar fired another strong shot after the stick stop but again the Hempfield defense was able to block the attempt.  After junior Strealy Clark was stopped by Novak, Ertzberger finally was able to record the hat trick, but it took a great effort.  This time, the Tiger junior took three straight shots before finally beating Novak with the fourth NA goal at the 24:12 mark.  Senior Elise Moore made it a 5-0 game with a hard shot from the right side that cleanly beat Novak at the 18:14 mark of the half.  Strealy Clark continued the pressure with a pair of hard shots that Novak turned aside with just over 17 minutes remaining.  Sophomore Megan Hoot was able to convert on a pass from Umble with 12:15 remaining the the Tiger lead went to 6-0.  Seven minutes later, Strealy Clark shot just wide of the Hempfield goal.  NA had a final scoring opportunity when Testa had her attempt stopped by Novak with 7:15 left in the game.  The Lady Tigers went on to a 6-0 victory.

The Lady Tiger defense overwhelmed Hempfield as they did not allow a shot at the NA goal.  On the offensive end, NA ended up with twelve penalty corners to just one for the Spartans.  For her scoring efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Steph Ertzberger as the Player of the Game.

The win was the ninth straight without a loss for the Lady Tigers in WPIAL competition.  During the streak, NA has outscored the opposition, 31-1.  The Lady Tigers will be on the road tomorrow night when they visit Greensburg Salem in an 8:00 pm section contest.  On Friday night, the Lady Tigers will host Mt. Lebanon in a replay of last year's WPIAL title game won by NA, 1-0.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Newman Stadium.

"CHICKS WITH STICKS" DOMINATE
WOODLAND HILLS, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After a scoreless first half, the Lady Tigers scored three times in the second on their way to a 3-0 victory over Woodland Hills at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Senior Elise Moore, junior Amy Antimarino, and senior Lauren Umble scored the goals as NA dominated play to win their seventh straight against WPIAL teams without a loss.

The Lady Tigers put the pressure on the Wolverines from the outset of the game but could not score in the first half.  At the 25:15 mark, Umble had a good chance from in front of the goal but her shot was blocked.  Senior Kelly White was open to the left of the goal but sent it wide.  Senior Taylor Gaspar sent a hard shot at the Wolverine goal, but WH goalie Sam Ventura made a tough kick save to keep the game scoreless with 21:23 left.  Antimarino got loose in the circle a minute later, but Ventura again came through with the stop.  Gaspar had another opportunity on a penalty corner but her shot was blocked again by the defense.  Senior Christy Knable had a couple of chances at the 12:3;7 and 8:34 marks but could not score.  Ventura came up big again with 8:34 left when he made a sparkling kick save to rob Gaspar.  Finally, with 4:15 remaining in the half, sophomore Brooke Baxendell almost deflected an NA shot past Ventura but the WH goalie made the save.  Although the Lady Tigers controlled play, the teams went to the intermission scoreless.

It took only 2:33 for the Lady Tigers to finally score.  Moore was able to poke the ball under Ventura after a big scramble in front of the net as NA took a 1-0 lead.  Junior Strealy Clark came close to extending the lead just moments later but her shot went wide.  Moore then set up Antimarino with a good pass in the circle, and the NA junior converted with a hard shot to beat Ventura and give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 advantage.  Antimarino came free on the right side just two minutes later, but her shot went wide.  After a time out, Ventura made several big saves.  Sophomore Megan Hoot had a chance from in front at the 6:54 mark but her shot was blocked.  After senior right link Emily Scuilli had her shot stopped by senior goalie Erin Conwell, Umble was able to score from another scramble in front of the WH goal.  Scuilli came back moments later to break in free on Conwell, but the NA netminder swept the ball away for her second save of the game.  The Wolverines would not threaten again as the Lady Tigers completed a 3-0 shutout.

The Wolverines kept their defense packed in tight, making it tough for the NA shots to get through.  One problem for WH, however, was that they kept picking up fouls in the circle.  The Lady Tigers had fourteen penalty corners in the first half alone but could not convert.  The final totals showed NA with 17 corners, WH with none.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Elise Moore as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the overall NA record against WPIAL teams improved to 7-0.  The Lady Tigers outscored their opponents, 23-1, so far this season.  NA will host Allderdice on Friday night at Newman Stadium.  It will be Alumni Night with the JV game scheduled to start at 6:30 pm and the varsity contest at 8:00 pm.
