NA ROWERS EARN 17 MEDALS AT HEAD OF THE OCCOQUAN

Saturday & Sunday, November 5 & 6, 2005

The NA Tigers finished out their fall rowing season in style with 17 of their 24 boats earning medals at the Head of the Occoquan Regatta in Fairfax, Virginia.  The Tigers combined for 7 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.  All of NA’s boats had top 10 finishes.  In many of their events they defeated college teams and more experienced club teams.

NA’s men were dominant in the singles events, taking both first and second places in the novice and youth categories.  The NA women and men both did likewise in the quad events.  The Tiger men and women combined forces to grab the gold in the mixed octuples/eights, finishing ahead of second place Loyola College and third place Penn State University.  NA’s new fall novices jumped into the medals as well, with gold for the women and silver for the men in the youth novice four events.

The Head of the Occoquan is one of the largest and fastest growing end-of-season regattas in the United States.  It brings together highly competitive high school, college and club teams from across the East Coast.

NA’s rowers will be keeping in shape over the winter break and will be back in action on Saturday, March 4, 2006 when they will host other area rowing teams for the 7th annual North Allegheny Indoor Rowing High School Championships at Marshall Middle School.

NA DOMINATES SCULLING EVENTS AT SPEAKMON REGATTA

When the NA’s Tiger Rowers departed from the Griggs Reservoir at the end of Saturday’s Speakmon Memorial Regatta, they took home an impressive 14 medals – 5 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze.  NA continued its domination in sculling events, capturing 5 of the available 8 gold medals, adding silvers in 2 more, and sweeping the medals in the Women’s Open Quads.

The regatta, run in head race format over a 2.8 mile course in Columbus, Ohio, attracted 40 college, high school and club teams, with over 400 boats competing in 45 race events.

NASH medal winners were Joe Brendel, A.J. Cadman, Anna Crews, Rory Dahl, Erin Dauson, Cherith Elliott, Bill Francis, Kathleen Janosco, Kate Jeffries, Brittney Kelly, Ian Levy, Steven Marcus, Mark Nolfi, Caitlyn Olsson, Briana Pittman, Liz Rebhun, Elena Reynolds and Kim Weaver.

TWO NA SENIORS NAMED TO USROWING SCHOLASTIC HONOR ROLL

North Allegheny Rowing Team seniors Singen Elliott and Kim Weaver were among 68 student-athletes from across the country named to the 2005-2006 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll.

The USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in both academics and rowing.  Applicants must be USRowing members, have rowed or coxed at least one year, and successfully competed at or above the league or regional level. This is the 15th year of this award.

The USRowing Youth Committee selected the winners based on a numerical ranking of their grades in academic solids, ACT or SAT scores, and class rank.

USRowing is a nonprofit organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States.

NA ROWERS TAKE TOP SPOTS AT HEAD OF THE OHIO

NA’s Tiger Rowers entered 23 boats in eight events at Pittsburgh’s own Head of the Ohio Regatta on Saturday and claimed at least one medal in every one of those races.  The Tigers picked up six first place, three second place and four third place finishes and all 23 NA boats clinched top-ten spots.

In the Men’s High School & Youth Singles event NA took not only the three medals spots but 4th place as well.

Head of the Ohio, in its 19th year, is a major fall rowing event that attracts over 90 teams from Eastern and Midwestern states for races at the high school, college and club levels.

NA ROWING WELCOMES NEW RECRUITS

The North Allegheny Rowing Team has selected 17 new rowers as a result of its recently completed fall tryouts.

The women’s team is pleased to welcome returning rower Cyeda Banks as well as new members Brittney Bergman, Sarah Boring, Maria DeIuliis, Jordan Herbert, Katelyn Hilderbrand, Victoria Horn, Sarah Kelly, and Michelle Weaver.

The men’s team welcomes new members Canaan Colwick, Mark Dissen, Mike Dittmar, Dan Jeffries, Peter Joyce, Mike McGowan, Jim Rectenwald and Sumeet Shroff.

The Tiger Rowers will take to the water on Saturday, October 1 for the prestigious Head of the Ohio Regatta.  The event will bring together over 100 high school, college and club teams from more than a dozen states and will be held on Pittsburgh’s own Allegheny River from Washington’s Landing to Heinz Field.  Admission is free.
