TIGERS RALLY IN SECOND HALF TO
DOWN #2 GATEWAY, 61-54

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers came back from a 14-point second half deficit to hand #2 Gateway their first loss of the season as NA downed the Gators, 61-54.  Sophomore guard Anthony Dallier tallied 15 points to pace NA while junior guard Anton Constantino added 14 for the winning Tigers.

The game started out with a fast pace but scoring was limited.  Gateway got on the board first when Devon Cottrell put back a rebound.  After Dallier drove the middle to score and tie the game, Mike Kromka hit a triple to put the Gators up, 5-2.  NA answered on a drive by Constantino and two free throws by senior forward Ryan Besonson to take their first lead of the game, 6-5.  Gateway then went on an 8-0 run on a basket by Tyler Scott, another put back by Cottrell, a coast to coast layup by Craig Banks, and a layup by Anthony Keel off the Gator bench.  Dallier stopped the run with one of two from the line, but Scott followed with a dunk off a pass from Cottrell to make it 15-7 with 2:10 remaining.  Senior Ben Colabrese scored on a driving layup to cut the margin to 15-9 after one quarter of play.

Defense was the name of the game in the second quarter with neither team scoring in double figures.  Cottrell made it 17-9 just 19 seconds into the period, and a jumper by Barnnett Harris pushed the margin to double figures at 19-9.  Constantino came back with a driving layup, and Counahan hit a long triple from the left corner to bring NA within five at 19-14 with 2:17 remaining.  After Cottrell scored on yet another put back, junior guard Steve Ferringer hit a jumper to cut the margin to 23-16 with 1:05 left.  Neither team could score again as the Gators took a 23-16 advantage to the intermission.

The scoring picked up in the third quarter.  Gateway threatened to break the game open with a 9-2 run at the start of the period.  Two foul shots and a long trey by Scott, a layup by Cottrell, and a basket by Banks led the run with a put back by Colabrese the only NA score.  After Ferringer hit one of two from the line, Cottrell answered with one from the stripe to make it 33-19 with 4:52 remaining in the quarter.  Besonson came back with a hoop off an out of bounds play but Kromka hit one of two free throws as the score went to 34-21.  With 3:29 left, Harris was called for an intentional foul with senior Jake Wrigley converting both attempts.  Dallier was then fouled on the ensuing possession and also converted a pair from the line as NA moved to within nine at 34-25.  After a Gateway turnover, Dallier drove and scored and added another free throw to make it 34-28.  Kromka answered with a layup to temporarily slow the rally, but the Tigers kept pressuring the Gators.  A layup by Dallier was answered by a Cottrell jumper to make it a 38-30 game.  NA scored the last five points of the quarter to close within three.  After Constantino drove the middle for two, Dallier converted another conventional three-point play to cut the margin to 38-35 after three quarters of play.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Tigers.  Besonson scored on a drive and followed with another layup to give NA the lead at 39-38.  The Tigers would not trail again.  Constantino added a pair from the line, and Counahan hit a triple to push the margin to 44-39 with 5:12 left.  After a time out by Gateway, Dallier scored to make it 46-39.  Cottrell came back with a hoop and free throw to cut the margin to four.  After an NA miss, the Gators broke across midcourt.  Counahan stole the ball, however, and stopped and popped another triple to push the lead to 49-42 with 4:10 still remaining.  After Kromka made two of four foul shots,  Constantino scored on another driving layup to make it a 51-44 game.  Scott came back with a triple from the right side to cut the lead to three, but the Tigers again had the answer as Constantino drilled a three from the left side to make it a 54-47 game.  Two free throws by Cottrell cut the lead to five with 2:55 left with Constantino following with one of two from the stripe.  Ferringer then drove the middle and scored, adding the free throw to push the margin to nine at 58-49 with 1:44 on the clock.  Banks hit one of two free throws and followed with a driving layup to cut the lead to 58-52.  With 38.5 left, Ferringer hit a pair from the line to make it 60-52.  Kromka answered with a hoop but the Gators were running out of time.  Ferringer’s free throw finished the scoring as the Tigers completed the upset with the 61-54 victory.

Statistically, the Tigers rallied from a poor shooting first half to finish with a respectable 20 of 57 (35.1%) from the floor but only 4 of 17 (23.5%) from beyond the arc.  From the foul line, NA converted on 17 of 23 (73.9%).  Gateway started well but finished with 19 of 45 (42.2%) from the field with just 3 of 11 (27.3%) from three-point land.  From the line, the Gators were hurt by making only 13 of 22 (59.1%).  In rebounding, the taller Gators totaled 37 to the Tigers' 29.  NA' pressure defense forced 22 Gateway turnovers resulting in 21 Tiger points.  In the paint, NA surprisingly held a 30-26 edge.  Off the bench as usual, the Tiger reserves outscored the Gator bench by a 16-7 margin.  Individually, Besonson had a great night on the boards pulling down 12 rebounds.  Counahan posted six steals to lead in that category.  Constantino was 5 for 8 from the field, including a key three-point basket.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Anton Constantino as the Player of the Game.

The win improved the NA overall record to 9-1 on the season.  The Tigers will host undefeated Butler on Friday night in a key section contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
