Behind a flurry of touchdowns in the second and third quarters, the North Allegheny Tigers pounded the Peters Township Indians 38-7 on Friday night in the first round of the Quad-A playoffs. In an all-around performance, the Tigers offense, defense and special teams outplayed the Indians for the final three quarters of the game. However, in the first quarter, it was Peters Township who owned the early momentum. North Allegheny opened the ballgame with a 10-play, 53 yard drive that culminated with a 28 yard field goal by place kicker Alex Greenblatt to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead with 7:50 on the first quarter clock. Peters Township’s first offensive possession was impressive as the Indians nicely mixed the passing of quarterback Austin Hancock and the running of tailback Andrew Erenberg. The seven play, 73 yard drive was capped on 19-yard touchdown run by Erenberg to put the Indians in front, 7-3 at 5:30 in the second quarter. For the time being, the underdog Indians had quieted the crowd at Newman Stadium. But the home crowd wouldn’t stay silent for long as the Tigers flipped the switch once the second quarter began. Starting the second period from their own 35 yard line, Michael Buchert tossed a 41 yard pass to Dan Slivka, deep into Peters Township territory. On the following snap, Alex Papson rushed into the end zone with a 24 yard touchdown to put NA on top at 10-7. The next time North Allegheny touched the football, the Tigers traveled 72 yards on seven plays to grab a 17-7 advantage on a Papson 4-yard TD carry. Peters Township was hoping to answer the Tigers score, but Brendan Coniker had other ideas. The NA sophomore defensive back intercepted a Hancock pass and returned it 52 yards to the Indians 20 yard line. Two plays later, the Tigers were in the end zone again. This time the touchdown came on a fantastic 12-yard touchdown catch by Slivka who used his 6-foot-3 frame to take the ball away from a Peters Township defender while also tip toeing the sideline. The TD strike to Slivka came off the right arm of Buchert, the first of two scoring passes on the night for the senior. Coming out of halftime with a 24-7 lead, North Allegheny’s defense forced a three-and-out allowing the offense to continue their onslaught. Papson put the punctuation mark on a 46 yard drive with a one yard touchdown plunge to up the Tigers lead to 31-7. After a Slivka interception, NA got on the scoreboard again when Buchert fired a 57 yard touchdown pass to Coniker to increase the score to 38-7, Tigers with 6:05 left in the third quarter. Coniker’s catch was an acrobatic catch in between two defenders and then he raced the rest of the way for the score. The Tigers defense made sure that the 31 point lead would be more than enough by picking off another pass from Peters QB Austin Hancock and blanking the Indians the rest of the way. North Allegheny’s second team offense also saw some playing time in the fourth quarter. Senior running back Alex Papson got back on track with 126 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the night. Michael Buchert was outstanding, running for 96 yards and throwing for another 171, and two touchdowns. Dan Slivka pulled in five receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown. On an evening filled with tremendous performances, it was Brendan Coniker who was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game. Coniker had two huge plays in the game, a 52-yard interception return and a 57-yard touchdown catch. Not to mention 6.5 tackles and several passes defended for the sophomore. The
victory sends NA to the quarterfinals of the Quad-A playoffs to face
Bethel Park next week at Pine-Richland. The 13th seeded
Blackhawks upset McKeesport on Friday 24-21. You can hear all the action
