FULLER'S GOAL BEATS FOX CHAPEL, 1-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Sophomore forward Kylie Fuller scored just 3:50 into the game, and the NA defense held off Fox Chapel for the remainder of the game as the Lady Tigers defeated Fox Chapel, 1-0, at Newman Stadium on Monday night.  Once again, NA played superb defense with freshman Christina Boada, sophomore Larissa Steeb and junior MF Dawn Murphy all contributing.

The Lady Tigers started quickly, applying pressure in the Fox Chapel defensive zone from the outset.  The pressure paid off as NA earned a corner kick at the 2:30 mark.  Sophomore Taylor Gapczynski set a high ball to the far post and Steeb's header just missed giving NA the lead.  A little over a minute later, Fuller broke free down the left side and launched a high shot over the head of Fox Chapel GK Rebekah Schoenecker that settled just under the crossbar in the right corner of the net.  It would be the only goal of the game.  At the 14:02 mark, Gapczynski sent a rolling shot toward the goal but Schoenecker made the save.  Fox Chapel came back less than a minute later with their first shot of the half, but Jenny Hall's attempt from 25 yards went wide left.  NA had another corner kick with 12:50 left but could not convert.  Seconds later, senior defender Mel Versaw sent in a high shot that was caught by Schoenecker.  With 8:38 remaining, Murphy's header off a direct kick by Steeb narrowly missed.  Fox Chapel pressured the NA defense in the last ten minutes of the half but could not score.  The best chance came on a long attempt by Kelsey Russo that NA sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Middleman caught on the fly.  The half ended with the Lady Tigers holding the 1-0 advantage.

Once again, the Lady Tigers came out flying at the beginning of the half.  NA gained another corner at the 5:33 mark, but Murphy's hard shot went wide right.  Less than two minutes later, Steeb launched a hard shot off a direct kick that was caught on a bounce by the FC keeper.  After the Lady Tigers could not convert on another corner kick, Fox Chapel had a chance but were called for offsides at the 9:50 mark.  At the 14:52 mark, senior MF Chrissie Marshall had a great chance from 20 yards on the right side, but Schoenecker made a good save to keep the game at 1-0.  Less than two minutes later, Murphy had another chance off yet another corner kick that forced Schoenecker to make a diving save.  Middleman was forced to come out of the box to kick the ball away from a breaking Russo just past the midway point of the half.  NA resumed the pressure of the FC goal when Versaw set up Marshall coming down the right side, but Schoenecker made another diving save to knock the ball away with 17:50 left.  Less than a minute later, Marshall sent another attempt from the right side than the FC goalkeeper had to knock over the goal line.  With 11:09 left, the Foxes showed signs of life, but the Tiger defense was able to stop and clear an attempt by Amanda Jacobson.  With 9:50 remaining, Russo sent a long shot that Middleman caught easily.  For the remainder of the game, the NA defense held the Foxes without a good scoring opportunity.  When the horn sounded, the Lady Tigers had captured their first section victory with the 1-0 win.

The Lady Tigers controlled play for most of the game.  NA led in corner kicks, 7-1, and only some good saves by the FC goalkeeper kept the margin to one.  For her efforts on the defensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Christina Boada as the Player of the Game.

The win improved the NA section record to 1-3-1, the overall mark to 2-5-1.  The Lady Tigers will travel to rival North Hills tomorrow night to meet the Indians in a section contest.  Game time at Martorelli Stadium is scheduled for 7:45 pm.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team also defeated Fox Chapel, 1-0, with Shannon Hagy tallying the game winner for NA.

BUTLER EDGES LADY TIGERS, 1-0

The Lady Tiger defense and sophomore GK Rachel Middleman had another good performance at Butler on Friday night, but it was not enough as the Tornado captured a 1-0 victory.  The only goal came midway through the second half when Chelsea Rock got the game winner.

Early in the first half, Middleman was forced to stop the Tornado at the 5:26 mark.  A good defensive effort kept the Tornado bottled up until the 18th minute when Middle was forced to make another save.  NA had an opportunity at the 19 minute mark, but senior Kelsey Donegan's attempt was stopped by Butler GK Chelsea Rice.  At the 24:55 mark, senior midfielder Chrissy Marshall was also stopped by Rice.  After the Tornado had a pair of attempts cleared by the NA defense, sophomore Taylor Gapczynski's try of a corner kick was cleared by Butler.  Middleman was forced to make a good save on a shot by Ashley Oluschak with 3:45 remaining in the half, and the NA defense was able to clear the rebound.  A final Butler chance with less than two minutes left was also cleared by the NA defense.  The teams went to the intermission with a scoreless tie.

In the second half, the Tornado earned two corner kicks, but the NA defense was there.  At the 11:00 minute mark, Marshall sent a cross through the box but the Lady Tigers could not convert.  Senior Jourdan Spence had a chance at the 13:25 mark, but her shot went right to the Butler keeper.  The Tornado came back with the next three shots, including the goal by Rock at the 26:45 mark as Butler took the 1-0 lead.  NA had one more chance with 7:51 remaining in the game, but junior Kelly Gilmour's shot went right to keeper Rice.  Butler missed on their last attempt with a shot over the goal with 2:20 left, but one was enough as the Tornado went on to the 1-0 victory.

It was another good defensive effort by the Lady Tigers who were outshot by the Tornado, 14-6.  With the loss, the NA section record fell to 0-3-1, the overall mark to 1-5-1.  NA will host Fox Chapel tonight at Newman Stadium.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team shut out Butler, 3-0, on Friday night.  Scoring for the Lady Tigers were Nicole Goldstein, Maria Snyder, and Shannon Nagy.

PINE-RICHLAND SCORES IN LAST SECOND OF SECOND OVERTIME TO EDGE NA, 1-0

Photo Gallery

The Lady Tigers dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to the defending WPIAL and PIAA Champion Pine-Richland Rams on Wednesday night at Newman Stadium.  After keeping the Rams off the board for for two halves of regulation, an overtime period and 9:59 of the second OT, freshman Stacey Weismann was able to direct in a corner kick as time ran out.

NA Coach Chet Gapczynski decided to play defense against the high scoring Rams and it almost paid off.  Early in the game, neither team was able to mount much of an offensive threat.  At the 4:43 mark, senior MF Adrienne Steckel tried to direct a cross past NA sophomore GK Rachel Middleman but the attempt was stopped.  Six minutes later, Weismann picked off an errant Tiger clearing pass in the box but her shot went wide.  Less than a minute later, P-R had a great opportunity to take the lead.  After Middleman had to come out to made a stop, sophomore defender Larissa Steeb stepped in front of another Ram shot.  Middleman then made a diving save of yet another P-R attempt to keep the game scoreless.  Midway through the half, Ram sophomore Sarah Lusby drove a hard shot on one hop that Middleman collected.  Late in the half, the Lady Tigers had a chance.  Sophomore forward Savanna Kelly broke in alone on Ram GK Christie Kimball who made a feet first sliding save.  With 4:49 remaining, a long attempt for sophomore Taylor Gapczynski was stopped by Kimball.  Steckel made a long run with 3:30 remaining but junior Dawn Murphy made a good defensive play to clear the ball.  With 45 seconds on the clock, Lusby drove another long attempt from 30 yards but it went over the goal.  The teams went to the intermission with a scoreless tie.

Pine-Richland came out strong early in the second half and attacked the NA goal.  Just one minute into the half, freshman Halie Carter cleared the ball out of the box after a big scramble in front of the net.  Less than a minute later, senior Torie Pikur lifted a long shot that Middleman was able to go high to bring down.  Junior Lindsay Thill set up junior Mallory Miller for a good attempt from right in front of the NA goal but her shot again went over the net.  At the 10:22 mark, senior Michelle Calabrese sent another high attempt from the 18, but again Middleman was able to make the save.  With 17:50 remaining, Middleman had to come out a punch away a high corner kick.  Four minutes later, Madeline Hennings sent a drive from 35 yards wide of the NA goal.  Less than a minute later, Middleman again had to punch away a corner kick.  Down the stretch in regulation time, Lusby sent a through ball that Middleman had to stop, Miller forced Middleman to made another save on a high shot, and Pikur had an attempt from 30 yards out.  In spite of the territorial advantage, the NA defense was able to keep the Rams off the board as regulation ended.  The teams were still scoreless going into overtime.

In the first overtime, the Lady Tigers did push the ball into the offensive end on several occasions but were unable to get a good attempt.  With 2:50 left, Lusby had a chance on a direct kick from 30 yards but her shot went wide.  The Rams earned two corner kicks in the last several minutes of the overtime period.  On the second, the ball bounced free in the box, but the NA defense was able to clear the Ram attempt off the line. The game remained scoreless going into the second OT.

In the second extra period, Gapczynski drove a long shot wide from 35 yards early in the period.  With 3:40 left, Steckel had a chance on a cross from Pikur but her attempt went wide right.  Finally with time running out, Lusby sent a high corner kick toward the NA goal.  Weismann was able to direct the bouncing ball into the net as time ran out.  It was a tough loss for the Lady Tigers who fought the defending champions throughout the evening.

Pine-Richland had a huge territorial edge in the contest.  The Rams piled up a total of 12 corner kicks to none for the Lady Tigers.  P-R was able to finally convert on the last of the corner kicks to win the game.  For the defensive minded Tigers, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Larissa Steeb as the Player of the Game as she represented the effort given by NA in the contest.

With the loss, the Lady Tigers drop to 0-2-1 in section play, 1-4-1 overall.  NA will travel to Butler on Friday night to meet the Tornado in a 7:30 pm section contest.

Seneca Valley outshot the Lady Tigers, 10-0, in the first half.  Only a great effort by the NA defense and sophomore GK Rachel Middleman kept the Raiders off the board until late in the half.  With just 1:28 remaining, Kate Kelly was able to give SV a 1-0 advantage they took to the intermission.  Middleman made some great saves while two Raider corner kicks were headed away from the goal by sophomore Larissa Steeb and junior Dawn Murphy.

Both teams threatened in the early going with the Lady Tigers registering a shot and Shaler two.  Bridgitte Smalstig broke through at the 13:08 mark to score the game's first goal and give the Titans a 1-0 advantage.  A little over a minute later, sophomore Taylor Gapczynski took a corner kick but NA could not convert.  Shaler had two more good chances but sophomore GK Rachel Middleman made a pair of good saves to keep the deficit at one.  Erin Fitzpatrick had the first opportunity with Lauren Barbour coming close with the second.  Junior Kelly Gilmour had a chance at the 24:30 mark but her shot went right to Shaler GK Alicia Tutino.  Shaler had corner kicks at the 29:40 and 31:45 marks but the NA defense cleared both.  Junior Alexis Smith had the final chance but Tutino stopped her with 5:20 remaining in the half.  Shaler took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.

Shaler started strong in the second half, registering the first five shots.  Smalstig had an opportunity but her attempt went over the goal.  A corner kick was cleared by NA, another shot went wide right, and Smalstig had two additional chances but missed the goal.  Gapczynski came close at the 13:45 mark but her shot went right to GK Tutino.  Middleman stopped the next two Shaler attempts.  At the 22:35 mark, Versaw headed a pass from Spence just wide of the goal.  Less than two minutes later, the Lady Tiger duo finished with Versaw scoring on the pass from Spence as NA tied the game at 1-1.  Senior Brittany Antonucci had a chance to give NA the lead but Tutino was there to make the save.  Barbour almost put Shaler in front but her attempt went across the goal crease.  Gilmore got a final Tiger chance on a corner kick but Tutino made the save to send the game to overtime.

The Lady Tigers came out strong in both overtime periods and controlled play but could not score.  The Lady Tigers had several shots in the second OT, but could not convert.  The game ended in a 1-1 tie.  Shaler outshot NA, 15-8, with an 8-4 advantage in the second half.

LADY TIGERS, 5-2

After trailing by a 2-1 halftime score, the Lady Tigers saw Howland (OH) score the first three goals of the second half on their way to a 5-2 victory at Howland on Tuesday night.  Senior Jourdan Spence and sophomore Taylor Gapczynski scored the NA goals.

The Lady Tigers had the first scoring chance just 1:25 into the contest but Spence was unable to score.  Howland came back at the three minute but Megan Long's attempt was stopped.  Junior forward Alexis Smith set up junior defender Kelly Gilmour at the seven minute mark but she was unable to convert.  At this point, Howland turned up the offensive pressure but could not score when Drew's attempt missed and a corner was not converted.   The Howland Tigers were able to take the lead when Drew scored at the 14 minute mark.  Senior Stephanie Kaul made it 2-0 eight minutes later.  Howland had two more chances later in the half, one on a corner but could not add to the lead.  NA finally broke through with 2:30 remaining when senior midfielder Chrissie Marshall set up Spence to cut the lead in half.  After a final shot by Megan Long was turned away by NA, the Howland Tigers took a 2-1 advantage to the intermission.

Neither team mounted much offense early in the second half.  Fourteen minutes into the half, sophomore GK Rachel Middleman made a good save on a Howland attempt.  Three minutes later, the Ohio team scored on a direct kick to make it a 3-1 game.  Senior Deja Amato then headed a corner kick into the goal at the 24 minute mark to increase the margin to 4-1.  Marshall made a good run with eight minutes remaining but was stopped by the Howland keeper.  Amato answered for the Howland Tigers when she scored after taking a pass from freshman Amy Seagraves to give the home team a 5-1 lead.  With 4:15 remaining, an NA player was pulled down in the box.  Gapczynski drilled the PK home to cut the margin to 5-2.  In the last minute, both teams had chances.  after a Howland shot went wide, NA came back with Spence's shot caught by the keeper with just one second on the clock as Howland took the 5-2 victory.

The Lady Tigers had chances with 7 shots on goal to 13 for Howland.  With the loss, the overall NA record dropped to 1-2 in the early season.  NA was scheduled to play at Deer Lakes tonight, but the game was postponed until later in the season on October 4.  The Lady Tigers will begin section play on Friday night when they host Shaler at Newman Stadium.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
