GAPCZYNSKI'S GOAL FINISHES FOX CHAPEL, 3-2

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior midfielder Jordan Gapczynski drilled a shot into the left corner of the Fox Chapel net from 28 yards away with just five minutes remaining in the game to give NA a 3-2 victory over the Foxes at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Sophomore forwards Maura Romano and Jourdan Spence scored the first two Lady Tiger goals.

Early in the first half, the Lady Tigers put pressure on the Fox Chapel goal but could not score.  Spence's shot from 40 yards away was the best chance, but it went over the goal.  Later in the half, junior midfielder Kellie Cope did put the ball in the net, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul called against NA.  With 13:57 remaining, FC senior MF Kaitlyn Langett was able to direct a bouncing ball into the NA goal to give the Foxes a 1-0 lead.  Freshman Kelsey Russo came close to making it 2-0 when she lifted another bouncing ball off the crossbar with 5:45 left in the half.  Neither team could score in the remaining time, and the teams went to the intermission with Fox Chapel holding a 1-0 advantage.

The Lady Tigers came out strong in the second half and it paid off.  NA sent two players in alone on the FC goal.  Gapczynski beat FC goalkeeper Alicia Miksic to the ball, and Romano was able to direct it into the goal.  The Lady Tigers had tied the game at 1-1 just 2:29 into the half.  NA continued to pressure the Fox Chapel goal with junior MF Emily Guzzetti getting a chance right in front of the goal but Miksic made the save.  The Foxes came back to take the lead on a long direct kick by senior defender Sarah Kwoh at the 31:14 mark.  Senior GK Megan Campbell, who had replaced sophomore starter Danielle Mostachetti in the first half, was able to get a hand on the shot but could not keep from going over the line.  The goal seemed to energize NA as they had numerous chances to again tie the game.  Freshman Dawn Murphy forced Miksic to make a good save at the 30:21 mark and then put a shot over the goal just a minute later.  Spence drilled a shot from 15 yards away and forced another Miksic save with 24:07 left in the game.  Spence finally tied the game with a well-place shot from the right side from fifteen yards away that just rolled inside the left post.  With 21:46 remaining, the teams were tied at 2-2.

The Lady Tigers continued to control play and kept the ball in the FC end for most of the remainder of the game.  Junior midfielder Leigh Cullen had a chance from 26 yards at the 18:58 mark but the shot went wide left.  With 9:42 left on the second half clock, junior defender Kelly Langhans headed a corner kick just over the goal.  Gapczynski finally decided the issue.  The Tiger senior took the ball on the left side, avoided the FC defender, and got the game winner on a rocket shot that went into the upper left hand corner of the net.  Guzzetti had a chance to increase the margin, but her hard shot was caught on one hop by Miksic.  Cope had another opportunity with 1:28 remaining but put the ball over the goal.  The NA defenders then held off a final run by the Foxes, and the Lady Tigers picked up a big 3-2 victory.

The win improved the NA section record to 2-3, the overall mark to 4-3.  For her game-winning effort, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Jordan Gapczynski as the Player of the Game.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action again tomorrow night when they travel to North Hills to meet the rival Indians in a section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

PINE-RICHLAND DEFEATS LADY TIGERS, 1-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

In a tough, defensive struggle, the Pine-Richland Rams were able to defeat the Lady Tigers, 1-0, at Newman Stadium on Wednesday night.  Junior Meghan Klingenberg scored the game's only goal on a direct kick from 35 yards away to give the Rams the victory.  NA played well and had several good scoring opportunities but could not convert.

After a slow start, the Lady Tigers had the first shot at goal at the 33:00 mark but sophomore Jordan Spence's attempt went wide.  With a little over 26 minutes remaining in the half, starting sophomore goalkeeper Katie Mahoney was injured and was replaced by sophomore Danielle Mostachetti.  With 19:10 remaining, senior MF Jordan Gapczynski sent a dangerous cross through the box, but the Lady Tigers could not get a good shot.  At the 13:45 mark, Gapczynski hit the right goal post and the rebound came back right in front of the Ram goal.  Junior Leigh Cullen was unable to settle the ball in time to get off a shot, and the game remained scoreless.  With just 5:40 remaining, NA was called for a foul with the ball placed 35 yards out and to the right of the NA goal.  Klingenberg placed a perfect shot into the upper right hand corner for what was to be the game winner.  Freshman Molly Antimarino had a chance with 3:30 remaining but her cross again eluded the rushing NA players.  The teams went to the intermission with the Rams holding a 1-0 advantage.

The Rams came out strong early in the second half and had two good scoring chances in the first 9 minutes.  Junior Mariel Pfischner drove a low, hard shot that Mostachetti made a good save on at the 35:51 mark.  A little more than three minutes later, Mostachetti came up big on a shot by junior  Jordan Baranowski to keep the deficit at one goal.  With 28:14 remaining, NA sophomore forward Maura Romano went down in the penalty area but no foul was called.  The Lady Tigers best chance came at the 16:23 marked when Gapczynski's hard shot was tipped just over the cross bar by freshman GK Christie Kimball.  The Rams continued to play good defense late in the game, but NA had one last opportunity.  With time running out, Gapczynski had a direct kick from 24 yards out on the left side.  Her game-tying attempt sailed just wide to the right of the goal, and the Rams went home with a 1-0 victory.

It was a tough loss for the Lady Tigers who played well against the #4 ranked Rams.  The loss dropped the NA section record to 0-3, the overall mark to 2-3.  For her defensive efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected junior defender Kelly Langhans as the Player of the Game.  NA will be back in action again on Saturday when they travel to Butler to meet the Tornado in a section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 11:30 am.
