NORTH ALLEGHENY VARSITY/JV WRESTLING MATCH SUMMARIES TIGERS CLAIM ALLEGHENY COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP The Tigers won their second title in four years with a victory on Saturday at the Allegheny County Wrestling Championships at Fox Chapel High School. NA scored 207 points to 197 for second place Shady Side Academy and 183.5 for third place Central Catholic. Senior Seb Fischer was the lone individual champion taking the title at 189 pounds. Senior Nick Rodgers at 119 and senior Andy Candiello at 145 both finished in second place to capture silver. Eight Tiger wrestlers placed in the top eight to pace NA to the title. Forty-one schools participated in the tournament. At 189, Fischer took the championship with a 6-1 decision over Jake Hart of Hampton. At 119, Rodgers dropped an 11-4 match to Geoff Alexander of Shady Side to finish second. Candiello, last year's champion at 135, lost a tough 3-2 decision to Nick Carr of South Fayette. Two Tigers captured bronze medals with third place finishes. At 130, junior Kevin Monper defeated Ken Scott of West Allegheny, 2-0, in overtime. At 160, sophomore Jared Lux pinned Ron Festa of Highlands at the 1:28 mark in the third-place match. Sophomore Greg Gaus was defeated by Russell Losteter of South Allegheny, 2-0, to finish in fourth place. Two additional Tigers placed as the NA depth paid off in a team title. At 140, senior Dom Leschak took sixth place after losing to Kevin Synan of Hampton, 8-2. At 152, freshman Alex DeCiantis took seventh place with a 5-1 decision over Sean Tomko of Baldwin. On Wednesday night, the Tigers will meet rival North Hills with first place in Section 3-B at stake. Both teams enter the match with 3-0 records in section matches. The Tigers posted nine forfeit wins along with pins by senior Nick Rodgers (125), sophomore Jared Lux (160), and sophomore Matt Yurcon (119) to easily defeat Avonworth, 72-6, at the Senior High gym on Wednesday night. The match started at 125 with Rodgers opening up a 6-2 lead after one period and extending the advantage to 13-4 before pinning Peter Shamot with 47.7 seconds remaining in the second period. At 130, sophomore Ryan Sippel won by forfeit as did sophomore Sam Cowley at 135 as NA opened an 18-0 lead. There was no match at 140, but the forfeits continued at 145 with senior Andy Candiello and at 152 with freshman Alex DeCiantis both recording forfeits as the lead went to 30-0. At 160, Lux took care of Mackenzie Gray with a pin at the 1:30 mark of the first period to make it 36-0. At 171, Avonworth's Ben Kramer gave the Antelopes their only points on the night with a pin of sophomore Kevin Clemens. Kramer led by a 2-0 score after one period before recording the fall with 36 seconds remaining in the second period. At 215, senior Seb Fischer won by forfeit as did senior heavyweight Alex Panormios to give NA a 54-6 advantage. The forfeits continued at 103 and 112 with sophomores Greg Gaus and Phil Bachman picking up the victories. With NA ahead, 66-6, Yurcon earned his first varsity win at 119. The Tiger sophomore built an 8-3 lead after one period before pinning Jacob Ruble with 47.7 seconds remaining in the second period. The fall gave NA the final 72-6 victory. For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Matt Yurcon as the Outstanding Wrestler of the match. The win improved the NA section record to 3-0, the overall mark to 8-1 on the season. The Tigers will host North Hills next Wednesday with the Section 3-B title on the line. This weekend, the Tigers will compete in the Allegheny County Tournament at Fox Chapel. Matches are scheduled to begin on Friday at 10:00 am. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * CANON MAC ENDS TIGER UNBEATEN The Tigers dropped a 34-21 decision on the road at Canon-McMillan High School on Wednesday night. Senior Andy Candiello at 145 and Jake Smith at 189 both recorded pins to pace NA. The loss broke a season opening seven match winning streak. The Big Macs got off to a good start with pins in the first two matches. At 112, Colt Short won by fall over sophomore Phil Bachman at 1:48 of the second period. Dario Dobbin pinned sophomore Mike Wanner at the 1:11 mark to give C-M an early 12-0 lead. The Tigers came back when senior Nick Rodgers took an 8-2 decision over Nick Oberhaus at 125 to cut the lead to 12-3. Will Pihiou from the Big Macs answered with a 5-3 decision over sophomore Ryan Sippel at 130. At 135, junior Kevin Monper came through with a 10-2 major against Vince Bushmire to cut the margin to 15-7. After Nick Catalano picked up an 18-7 major over sophomore Anthony Peluso at 140, Candiello pinned Cody Renzelli at the 4:45 mark to cut the margin to 19-13. The Big Macs captured thee next two matches with decisions at 152 and 160 as Canon-McMillan took a 25-12 lead. Sam Lombardo edged freshman Alex DeCintis, 3-1, at 152, and Colin Ryan also took a close decision with a 4-3 win over sophomore Jarred Lux at 160. NA lost a penalty point after the match at 152. The Tigers then rallied to win a pair of matches to close within four. At 171, sophomore Kevin Clemens decisioned Mark Dami, 3-1, and at 189 Smith pinned Alex Campbell at 1:58 of the second period to make the score, 25-21. Canon-McMillan came back to win the final three matches to close out the victory. Cody Klempay took a 4-2 decision over Seb Fischer at 215, senior Alex Panormios lost a tough 1-0 decision to Ian Binotto in the heavyweight match, and Connor Schram finished the evening with a 6-2 decision over sophomore Greg Gaus at 103. The Big Macs completed the 34-21 victory. With the loss, the Tiger overall record dropped to 7-1. NA will host Avonworth on Wednesday night as section competition continues. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAUS WINS TITLE AT 103; TIGER TEAM FINISHES 7TH AT MANHEIM TOURNAMENT Sophomore Greg Gaus won the individual championship at 103 to pace the Tigers at the 40th Manheim Lions Holiday Tournament at Manheim Central High School on Wednesday. At 285, senior Alex Panormios advanced to the final before losing but earned the silver medal. Three NA wrestlers captured third place medals --- junior Nick Rodgers at 125, senior Andy Candiello at 145, and senior Seb Fischer at 189. Gaus won the title at 103 with a 1-0 victory over Jake Smith of J.W. Robinson (VA). Panormios received a bye in the first round at 285 before pinning consecutive opponents to advance to the final. The NA senior put away Tim Gamber of Lower Dauphin at the 3:53 mark and took care of Steve Calderone of Kiski Area at the 14 second mark of the third period. Panormios was pinned at the 2:11 mark by Travis Friend of Cumberland Valley. At 125, Rodgers was edged, 2-1, by Joey Zoda of Shikellamy in the first round but stormed back in the consolation bracket to take the bronze. Rodgers took an 8-0 major from Jim Bistline of Kiski Area, decisioned Peter Dreher of Chapel Hill (NA), 6-0, and Quave Jesse of Spring Ford, 4-2, to move into the third place match. Rogers then edged Justin Wasmund of Erie Cathedral Prep to finish with the bronze. At 145, Candiello had a first round bye before decisioning Eric Dunhheimer of Downingtown West, 6-1. Mickey Bennett of J.W. Robinson (VA) edged Candiello, 7-6. In the consolation round, the Tiger senior decisioned Anthony Minotti of Easton, 8-4, before taking the third place medal with a 3-0 victory over Jake Taylor of Bald Eagle Area. At 189, Fischer pinned Cody Hicks of Bald Eagle Are at the 2:29 mark and followed with a pin of Tyler Greene of Easton at 1:12 of the second period. Dominick Wolfe of Shikellamy decisioned Fischer, 7-4, to drop him to the consolations. Fischer cam back with a 17-0 tech fall over Jeremy Fowler of Reynolds and captured third with a 4-3 win over David Hahn of Lower Dauphin. Several other Tigers won first round rounds to advance. At 130, sophomore Ryan Sippel took a 16-0 tach fall over Vaughn Holderman of Bald Eagle Area. In the next match, Mitchell Minotti of Easton pinned Sippel at the 2:25 mark. Sipple was eliminated in the consolations losing an 11-3 major to Dan York of Erie Cathedral Prep. At 135, junior Kevin Monper moved into the second round with a bye and then decisioned Mike McBryde of Erie Cathedral Prep with a 4-3 decision. Joseph Rizzolino of Easter sent Monper to the consolations with a 20-4 tech fall. In the consolations, Monper lost a 4-1 decision to Matt Neff of Shikellamy but rebounded to take fifth place with an 11-2 major over Ricky Gorelli of Spring Ford. At 160, senior John George moved into the second round via a bye but lost to Mike McCutcheion of Kiski Area on a fall at the 1:24 mark. In the consolations, George decisioned Jack Shope of Lower Dauphin, 7-0, before losing a 15-3 major to Jesse Derick of Cumberland Valley. At 215, senior Dan Pegher also move into the second round with a bye but was pinned by Logan Thompson of Erie Cathedral Prep at the 2:53 mark. In the consolations, Pegher pinned Justin Berg of Spring Ford at 4:17 before being eliminated by Alan Heim of Reynolds at the 0:10 mark of the match. At 152, freshman Alex DeCiantis lost a 17-0 tech fall in the first round but came back to win a pair of matches in the consolations. DeCiantis decisioned Dillan Erick of Manheim Central, 10-3 and Miles Wolfe of Shikellamy, 6-4. Ben Stallings decisioned DeCiantis, 5-3, to eliminate him from further competition. Four NA wrestlers lost two straight matches and were eliminated. At 112, sophomore Phil Bachman, at 119, sophomore Mike Wanner, at 140, sophomore Anthony Peluso, and at 171, sophomore Kevin Clemens all lost in the first round and were eliminated in the consolations. The Tiger team totaled 113 points in the tournament to finish in seventh place. Easton won the team title with Reynolds second and Kiski Area third. The Tigers took advantage of six forfeits on their way to an easy 64-12 victory over section rival Pine-Richland on Tuesday night at the Senior High gym. NA got pins from sophomore Greg Gaus at 103, senior Andy Candiello at 145, and senior Alex Panormios at 285 to win their second section match without a loss. After sophomore Anthony Pelusi started the match with a forfeit win, Candeillo jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two periods before pinning Anthon Haley 53 seconds into the third period. The fall increased the NA lead to 12-0. At 152, freshman Alex DeCiantis put together a workmanlike effort to decision Jordan Brennan of the Rams, 9-4, to increase the NA lead to 15-0. A forfeit win by sophomore Jared Lux at 160 added six more to the Tiger total. At 171, sophomore Kevin Clemens opened a 4-1 lead after two periods only to see Andrew Wood rally late. Wood's takedown with five seconds left made it close but Clemens held on for the 6-5 decision. A forfeit win by senior co-captain Seb Fischer at 189 gave the Tigers a commanding 30-0 advantage. Jake Heinz got the Rams on the board with a pin of senior Dan Pegher at the 1:50 mark. Panormios came back to pin Shawn Frankowski at the 1:37 mark to make it a 36-6 NA lead. Gaus followed at 103 with a pin of Luke Bodnar at the 2:35 mark after building a 12-2 lead in the first period. The NA lead in the match went to 42-6 before Luke Esswein answered for P-R with a pin of sophomore Phil Bachman at the 4:23 mark to cut the lead to 42-12. Two consecutive forfeit wins by sophomore Mike Wanner at 119 and sophomore Ryan Sippel at 125 pushed the margin to 54-12. At 130, junior Nick Rodgers took a 5-0 lead over Ross Orler after one, built the margin to 10-1 after two periods, and finished with a 16-3 major decision to make it 58-12. A forfeit win by junior Kevin Monper finished the scoring as the Tigers completed the 64-12 victory. The win gave NA a 2-0 mark in section, a 7-0 record overall in the early season. For his efforts against a tough opponent, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Nick Rodgers as the Outstanding Wrestler of the match. The Tigers will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Manheim Central High School for the Manheim Invitational. Action is scheduled to get under way at 10:00 am. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS TAKE TITLE AT DERRY DUALS The Tigers traveled to Derry Area High School in the snow on Saturday morning and came home with the title at the Derry Duals. NA downed Ft. Leboeuf, 57-15, before knocking off Kiski Prep, 44-25, in the second match. After an easy 73-3 win over Avonworth, the Tigers downed #3 ranked host Derry, 43-27. In the final match for the championship, NA defeated PIAA and WPIAL Class AA runnerup Shady Side Academy, 41-36. The wins improved the NA overall record to 6-0 in the early season. The Tigers will host Pine-Richland tomorrow night at the Senior High gym in a section match. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS ROLL OVER SHALER, The Tigers opened defense of their section championship with a 60-15 victory at Shaler on Wednesday night. NA got pins from freshman Alex DeCiantis (152), senior Seb Fischer (189), sophomore Greg Gaus (103) and senior Nick Rodgers (125) on their way to the easy victory. The match started at 140 with sophomore Sam Cowley winning by forfeit. A forfeit win by senior Andy Candiello at 145 gave the Tigers a 12-0 lead early. DeCiantis came through with a pin at the 2:56 mark to increase the lead to 18-0. At 160, senior John George picked up a major decision to make it 22-0 before the Titans registered any points. At 171, Shaler's Josh Fleming decisioned sophomore Kevin Clemens to put the Titans on the board at 22-3. After Fischer pinned Joe Jackson at the 51 second mark, Shaler won the next two matches. At 215, Kevin Cavolovich pinned senior Dan Pegher and Jamal Conroy won by fall over senior Alex Panormios to cut the NA lead to 28-15. The Tigers would not lose a match from this point. At 103, Gaus needed only 21 seconds to pin Kevin Bonicky and increase the lead to 34-15. NA got forfeit wins at 112 by sophomore Phil Bachman and at 119 by sophomore Mike Wanner as the lead went to 46-15. At 125, Rodgers pinned Travis Turkaley at the 2:48 mark to make it 52-15. At 130, sophomore Ryan Sippel won by major decision and at 135 junior Kevin Monper also took a major to make the final score 60-15. With the win, the Tigers will take a 1-0 record into the Derry Area Duals at Derry High School on Saturday. Match time is scheduled for 9:00 am. MATCH SUMMARY

At 103, sophomore Greg Gaus dropped an 11-1 major decision to Kaleb Lemaire of Caesar Rodney (DE) and was eliminated. At 145, senior Andy Candiello was edged, 3-1, by Tanner Lemon of Massillon Perry (OH). The Tigers finished with 28 team points and in 41st place out of 63 teams entered. Blair Academy of New Jersey won the tournament with 196.5 points. NA will begin section play on Wednesday when they travel to Shaler. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm. WALSH IRONMAN

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TWO NA WRESTLERS STILL ALIVE IN WALSH IRONMAN TOURNAMENT Two Tiger wrestlers will compete today in the consolation round of the prestigious Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament in Ohio. Three NA grapplers were victorious in the first round, but all were eliminated from the championship before the end of the day. Sophomore Greg Gaus will meet Kaleb Lemaire of Caesar Rodney (DE) today at 103 while senior Andy Candiello will face Tanner Lemon of Massillon Perry (OH) in the 145 pound weight class. In Friday's action, sophomore Kevin Monper won a 10-2 major over Zach Carbine (Smyrna (DE) at 130 to advance to the second round. Cody Pack of Quincy (CA) took a 17-1 tech fall over Monper sending him to the consolation round. Bryan Vannoy of Central Mountain (PA) eliminated Monper with a 2-0 victory. At 145, Candiello pinned Serafino Piermarini of host Walsh Jesuit at the 1:16 mark to advance. In the second round, Robert Henderson of Kiski School (PA) pinned Candiello. In the first consolation match, Candiello decisioned Isiah Morfin of Selma (CA), 5-2, to stay alive. At 160, sophomore Jared Lux downed Blake Thompson of Clovis (CA), 7-2 to advance before losing a 24-9 technical fall to Josh Demas of Westerville North (OH). In the consolations, Lux was eliminated by Tyler Buckwalter of Central Mountain on an injury default. At 103, Gaus lost to Bennett Payne of Fauquier (VA), 6-1. In the consolations, Gaus pinned Jim Regal of Mount Carmel (IL) at 2:50 before also pinning Alec Bowlick of Oak Harbor (OH) at the 48 second mark to stay alive. At 112, sophomore Mike Wanner was pinned by Evan Silver of Blair Academy (NJ) at the 1:14 mark. In the consolation round, Wanner won a 7-4 decision over Bobby Mason of Padua Franciscan (OH) before losing 6-2 to Dean obourke of Calvary Chapel (CA). At 119, sophomore Ryan Sippel dropped a 16-4 major to Jerome Robinson of St.Ignatius (OH) before being eliminated by Collan Dafonseca of Padua Franciscan (OH) by fall at the 4:43 mark. At 125, senior Nick Rodgers was edged by Ryan Hunsecker of Fauquier (VA), 4-3, before taking a forfet win from Christian Bailey of Davis (OK) in the first round of consolations. In the second round, Dante Decario of Derry decisioned Rodgers, 4-3, to eliminate him from the tournament. At 140, sophomore Anthony Peluso was pinned by Isaac Jordan of St. Paris Graham (OH) at 2:34 before being eliminated in the consolations by Tyler Calton of St.Ignatius (OH) by a 6-4 score. At 152, freshman Alex DeCiantis was pinned by Cody Allala of Hampton (VA) at 2:47 in the first round and was eliminated by Vincent Aboytes of Gilroy (CA), 4-0, in the consolations. At 171, sophomore Kevin Clemens was pinned by Huston Evans of St. Paris Graham (OH) at 1:56. In the consolations, Clemens was elminated by Bart Randolph of Wadsworth (OH), in an 8-1 decision. At 215, senior Dan Pegher was pinned by Marshall Cheatwood of Fauquier (VA) at 1:43 before being eliminated by Heckter Feliciano of Mount Carmel (IL) by fall at 2:37 in the consolation round. At 285, senior Alex Panormios also ran into a pair of tough competitors. In the first round, Brooks Black of Blair Academy (NJ) won by fall at 23 seconds. In the consolations, Greg Kuhar of St. Edward (OH) pinned Panormios at 3:19 to eliminate the Tiger senior from the tournament. The Tiger team is tied for 28th place among the 63 teams entered after the first day of competition. NA scored 28 points in the tournament. Action will be completed today at Walsh Jesuit with finals in both the championship and consolation brackets.
