SECOND HALF RALLY FALLS SHORT AS HOWLAND TAKES CLASSIC TITLE, 54-46

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

A furious second half rally by the Lady Tigers came up a little short on Thursday night at the Senior High gym as the Howland (OH) Tigers defeated NA, 54-46, to win the championship of the Golden Tiger Holiday Classic.  Senior Kristen Beatty led NA with 17 points with junior Maria Nolan adding ten.  Howland's 6-3 center, Ellie Shields, had 26 points to lead all scorers.

Howland scored first when 6-1 junior Alexa Williams dropped in a short jumper just 16 seconds into the game.  Beatty came back with a driving layup to tie the score at 2-2.  Shields answered with her first basket to put the Tigers back on top, 4-2, twelve seconds later.  After Nolan hit a short banker to tie the game, junior Allie Airhart scored to put Howland back ahead by two.  Williams dropped in a pair of free throws, but junior Ginny Thistle scored from under the hoop to cut it to 8-6.  After Carly Sabat hit a jumper, NA then turned the ball over twice with Williams scoring layups on both occasions to push the margin to 14-6.  Beatty set up Thistle for a driving layup as time was running out in the quarter, but Howland took a 14-8 lead after one.

The second quarter belonged to Shields and her Howland teammates.  Shields scored three quick hoops at the beginning of the period to push the lead to 20-8.  A basket and foul shot by Williams, plus two more baskets by Shields extended the lead to 27-8 with 4:45 still remaining in the quarter.  Beatty finally broke the streak with a basket, but it was Shields again and a foul shot by Allie Airhart that made it a 30-10 game.  Sophomore Julie Figan came off the bench to score on a short jumper, and Nolan followed with a hoop off the glass to cut the lead to 30-14.  Howland finished off the quarter with a basket and two foul shots by Shields along with a hoop by Melissa Airhart that gave the Tigers a 36-14 advantage at the intermission.  Shields scored 16 points in the quarter.

In the second half, the Lady Tigers came out energized and determined to make it a game.  NA held Howland to just a Shields basket and foul shot along with  two free throws by Melissa Airhart in the quarter.  The Lady Tigers rallied behind Beatty to cut into the lead.  After Airhart's foul shot made it 37-14, a foul shot by senior Meghan Hartwig, two hoops by Beatty, and a basket by Figan cut the margin to 37-21.  After Shields scored, Figan scored again on a putback to make it 39-23.  A foul shot by Shields was answered by a basket by Nolan.  After Airhart's second free throw of the quarter, sophomore Jackie Lang scored four straight free throws after she was fouled on two successive drives to the hoop.  NA outscored Howland, 15-5, in the quarter and went into the final period trailing, 41-29.

The Lady Tigers continued to press full court and were rewarded with Howland turnovers.  After Williams scored to extend the lead to 43-29, the Lady Tigers scored eight straight points.  Nolan hit a short jumper, Beatty made two foul shots and scored on another drive, and senior Sarah Haas dropped in a pair of free throws as NA cut the lead to 43-37 with 3:43 remaining.  Shields followed with one of two from the line, but Williams followed the miss with a basket to push the lead back to nine at 46-37.  Nolan broke free on a fast break to score a layup to cut it back to 46-39 with 2:42 left.  Howland then slowed the tempo and forced NA to foul.  Melissa Airhart made one of two to make it 47-39 with 2:20 on the clock.  After an NA miss, Sabat hit two from the stripe to push the margin to 49-39.  Beatty came back to hit three of four foul shots to cut the margin back to seven at 49-42 with 56.9 remaining.  Howland finally put the game away with a basket and two foul shots by Shields and a free throw by Williams to extend the lead to 54-42.  Beatty was able to make two foul shots and Lang drove for a basket with five seconds left, but Howland held on for the 54-46 victory.

After being dominated in the first half, the Lady Tigers did not give up and came back strong in the second half.  Good defensive pressure in the second half allowed NA to outscore Howland, 32-18.  One bright spot for the Lady Tigers came from the foul line where NA made 14 of 18 for 77.8%.  Neither team made a three-point basket in the game with NA 0 for 3 and Howland not attempting a triple.  For her efforts both on offense and defense, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Kristen Beatty as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the NA overall record fell to 6-4 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Chartiers Valley for a non-section game on Tuesday night.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Leading by only five points midway through the third quarter, the Lady Tigers took control of the game and went on to an easy 72-40 victory over Wheeling Park in the first round of the Golden Tiger Holiday Classic at the Senior High gym on Wednesday night.  Sophomore Julie Figan and junior Maria Nolan scored 13 points each to pace NA.  Senior Megan Hartwig and junior Ginny Thistle added 10 each as the Lady Tigers won third game of the last four.

The Lady Tigers jumped off to a 10-2 lead early thanks to defensive pressure full court that gave the Lady Patriots trouble.  Junior Kristen Beatty took the opening tip-off and dribbled in to score as NA never trailed in the contest.  Two hoops by Thistle from under the basket made it 6-0, and Nolan followed with a pair of baskets to give the Lady Tigers a 10-0 lead with 5:15 remaining in the period.  Annie DeFruscio finally broke through for WP, and Merisa Kausky came off the Patriot bench to hit a trey to cut the lead in half at 10-5.  NA answered by scoring the last six points of the quarter on two more scores by Thistle and a pair of foul shots by Beatty.  The Lady Tigers took a 16-5 lead after one quarter of play.

Wheeling Park rallied in the second quarter, actually outscoring NA, 14-13.  After Nolan opened the second period scoring with a jumper, Erika Martin answered to make it 18-7, just 1:15 into the quarter.  Beatty drove for a hoop with DeFruscio coming back from under the basket as the score went to 20-9.  Renee Lance brought the Lady Patriots closer with a driving layup and foul shot.  A long trey by senior Sarah Haas and a deuce by Thistle pushed the margin to 25-12 at the 4:42 mark.  WP scored the next five points on a hoop and a foul shot by Martin and a basket from 6-0 junior center Katelynn Hackathorn.  Two free throws by Hartwig pushed the lead back to ten at 27-17 before Lance answered with a pair from the line.  Nolan finished the first half scoring with a field goal to give the Lady Tigers a 29-19 lead at the intermission.  The NA defense forced 14 Patriot turnovers in building the ten-point halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Lady Patriots rallied early to cut the lead to five.  After Lance hit a triple, Nolan answered with a deuce to make it a 31-22 game.  Martin and DeFruscio then scored to cut the margin to 31-26 with 4:20 remaining in the quarter.  From this point, the Lady Tigers took over the game, outscoring the Patriots, 18-2, over the final minutes of the quarter.  Nolan scored on a putback and converted the foul shot to start the run.  Sophomore Dawn Murphy followed with a long trey from the right side to push the margin to 37-26.  Figan made one of two from the line, and scored on a drive plus another free throw as the lead went to 41-26.  After Beatty scored, Hartwig then took over under the basket scoring three straight hoops with Kausky tallying the only two Patriot points before the quarter ended.  After three periods of play, the Lady Tigers had a commanding 49-28 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Coach Will Saunders was able to get playing time for the entire bench.  Figan drained three consecutive treys at the beginning of the quarter to extend the lead to 58-31 with 5:45 remaining in the game.  NA continued to add to the total as Hartwig scored again, senior Nina Glisan dropped in a deuce and a triple to push the lead to 65-34.  Junior Megan Brennan added a layup, freshman Becca Aul made two from the line, and senior Tina Kachulis drained a trey as the Lady Tigers took a 72-40 victory over Wheeling Park.

It was a good team victory for the Lady Tigers who got contributions from all fourteen players.  Wheeling Park finished with 20 turnovers thanks to the pressing NA defense.  The Lady Tigers outrebounded WP, 38-23, with Hartwig pulling down 12 boards to lead NA.  For her efforts in the second half, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Julie Figan as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the overall NA record improved to 6-3 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will face Howland (OH) in the championship game tonight at the Senior High gym.  Howland edged #2 ranked Bethel Park, 40-38, in first round action.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
