TIGERS IN SECOND PLACE AFTER FIRST DAY OF PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Meet Results

In spite of a snowy day in Lewisburg that forced the PIAA to alter the format, the Tiger boys' team moved into second place in the Class AAA team standings just 3.5 points behind first-place Emmaus.  Because of a six-inch snowfall yesterday, the PIAA was afraid the swimmers and coaches might not be able to make it back in the evening for finals.  Instead of running a circle format with four heats with top swimmers dispersed throughout the heats, the PIAA went to a pyramid format using the top recorded times coming into the meet to place the top eight swimmers in a final.  It is similar to the WPIAL championships that also use a pyramid approach.

Again it was a team effort with no individual Tiger finishing higher than freshman Jonathon Buerger's seventh in the 200 freestyle.  The 200 free relay team of seniors Rob Meyers, John Nolan, Brendan Kirsch and Matt Becker finished in 3rd place while the 200 medley relay of Kirsch, Becker, Meyers, and sophomore Luis Rodriguez came in sixth.

Points are given for the top 16 places.  In the 200 free, Scherer added a 12th place behind Buerger's seventh while in the 200 IM senior Brandon Smith picked up valuable points with an 11th place finish.  In the 50 free, Meyers was 10th and Nolan 15th.  In the 100 fly, Rodriguez came in 10th and freshman Mark Waugh 12th as the Tigers used their team depth again to put themselves in a great position to win the team title.

In girls' competition, the Lady Tigers finished with 12 points good for 27th in the team competition.  Individually, junior Jamie Chakany finished in 17th, just out of the points in the 200 IM.  NA got points from sophomore diver Emilie Foley who came in 13th and the 200 free relay team of Chakany, junior Jessica Shearer, freshman Catie Kirsch, and junior Cait Cready that also finished 13th.

The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) will televise the meet on a delayed basis.  Tiger fans can view the action on Comcast Channel 48 or Armstrong Channel 50.  Swimming and diving events from both days will be presented on tape delay according to the following schedule:

TIGERS CRUISE TO SECOND CONSECUTIVE
WPIAL TITLE

Meet Results

Senior Matt Scherer won the only NA gold medal on the second day of competition in the WPIAL Class AAA Championships at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday, but the Tiger depth led them to their second straight title.  The Tigers scored 448 points to runnerup Peters Township's 256.  Scherer won the 100 freestyle to pace NA.  The Lady Tigers finished in seventh place with Bethel Park taking the title.  Junior Jamie Chakany won the bronze in the 500 free to lead NA.

The Tiger depth was the difference as a number of NA swimmers earned place points.  In the 100 free, senior John Nolan took fifth and sophomore Luis Rodriguez was sixth.  In the 500 free, freshman Jonathon Buerger won silver with junior Jack Crellin fourth and senior Brandon Smith sixth.  In the 100 breaststroke, senior Rob Meyers took third, junior Matt Becker fourth, and senior Brendan Kirsch fifth.  Junior Max Rzodkiewicz placed eighth as NA grabbed four of the eight places.  In the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay team was edged by Peters Township by 0.03 of a second.

For the Lady Tigers, Chakany qualified for the state meet with her third place finish in the 500.  The 400 free relay team came in seventh.  The top three finishers in each event automatically qualified for the PIAA meet at Bucknell University on March 14-17.  Coach Semler was pleased with the boys' title, but stated, "Our focus is to win the state championship this year."  The Tigers have put themselves in good position to achieve that goal.
