HERBERT'S FOUR GOALS BEAT HOLY GHOST PREP, 6-3, AS TIGERS WIN STATE TITLE

Junior forward Josh Herbert scored four goals, three in the last 2:29, to lead the Tigers to their first Pennsylvania Cup Championship with a 6-3 victory overHoly Ghost Prep at the Ice Works in Aston, PA, on Saturday afternoon.   NA scored four power play goals led by senior defenseman Wes Waldschmidt who scored a goal and three assists.

The Tigers dominated play in the first period, but it was Holy Ghost that scored first when Tommy Seravalli was able to beat NA junior goalie Max Richards at the 13:36 mark of the first period.  Wes Waldschmidt tied the game with a power play goal with just 14 seconds remaining in the period.

In the second period, the Firebirds continued to take penalties and NA made them pay.  Herbert scored his first goal at the 3:36 mark at the end of a two-man advantage to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.  NA continued to dominate the game and held a 23-3 shot advantage at one point in the period.  The Firebirds came back to tie the game, however, when Mike Andrusko scored from the right circle with 2:54 left in the period.  The teams went to the second intermission with the game tied at 2-2.

In the third period, the Tigers took the lead when sophomore Brady Waldschmidt poked home a rebound on yet another power play at the 7:54 mark.  After the Nick Seravalli tied the game at 3-3 with 5:48 remaining, Herbert got the game winner with 2:29 left with the fourth Tiger power play goal of the game.  Herbert added an insurance goal with a diving swipe to push the puck past HGP goalie Fran Begey.  The fourth Herbert tally came into an open net to complete the natural hat trick in the final period.  NA outshot Holy Ghost, 42-20, on the game.

The win marked the first state title for the Tigers and Coach Jim Black.  Coach Black picked up his second consecutive state championship after leading Pine-Richland to the crown last year.  The victory gave NA a final record of 20-4-1 along with the division title, the Penguin Cup and the Pennsylvania Cup!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH BLACK AND THE TIGERS!!!

TIGERS EDGE BETHEL PARK, 2-1, ON WES WALDSCHMIDT'S OT GOAL TO WIN PIHL TITLE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior Wes Waldschmidt scored with 1:02 remaining in the second overtime to give the Tigers a 2-1 win over Bethel Park and the PIHL Class AAA Championship at Mellon Arena on Sunday night.  Junior Josh Herbert tied the game with 1:33 remaining in regulation time to send the game into the extra sessions.

It was a defensive struggle from the outset with neither team getting many good scoring opportunities.  In the first period, Wes Waldschmidt gave indications of things to come when he drove a hard slapshot that BP goalie Pete Cosentino stopped with the rebound by sophomore Dylan Rohar just missing the goal.  Seconds later, David Spadacene hit the post behind Tiger junior goalie Max Richards and the game remained scoreless.  The Blackhawks continued to pressure the NA goal for the next several minutes but could not get off any good scoring chances.  Late in the period, the Tigers turned up the pressure forcing Cosentino to make a strong save. Late in the period, senior captain Dan Gaertner was sent to the box on an interference call with 36.1 on the clock.  Bethel did not score in the remaining time and the teams went to the first intermission still scoreless.  NA outshot Bethel, 4-2, in the period.

The Blackhawks started the second period with a power play, their only man advantage of the game.  It was the Tigers, however, that  almost scored.  Wes Waldschmidt broke into the BP zone and only a diving stop by the Blackhawk's Ken Lehmann kept the Tigers' star from getting off a good shot.  With 12:34 remaining, Bethel defenseman Matt Seifert was called for interference, the first of three consecutive BP penalties.  The Tigers came close on the power play when senior forward Matt Lancaster broke in all alone on Cosentino but missed the net wide left.  At one point, the Tigers had a two-man advantage for twenty seconds but could not score.  Tyler Trocano came close at the other end at the 7:18 mark, but Richards made a tough save to keep Bethel off the board.  Later in the period, Wes Waldschmidt made two outstanding defensive plays, sweeping the puck away from the crease and blocking an ensuing shot.  The Tigers went on yet another power play when Ramsey Netzel was sent off with 6:50 left.  Lancaster had two chances but could not beat Cosentino during the man advantage.  Late in the period, Bethel Park mounted an offensive attack getting off five shots, but Richards again stood tall in the net to keep the game scoreless after two periods.  Bethel outshot NA, 6-4, in the period with the teams tied at 8 shots a piece.

The third period began slowly with neither team wanting to make a crucial mistake leading to the all-important first goal.  It was Bethel that broke through first when Trocano was set up in front of the NA goal by Spadacene and flipped a short shot over Richards' shoulder into the net.  Bryan Brown earned an assist for his hard work in digging the puck free in the corner.  The Blackhawks then went into even more of a defensive shell to try to preserve the win and the title.  The Tigers had several chances to tie the game.  Herbert was stopped at the 7:20 mark when his wrist shot was turned aside by Cosentino.  Sophomore Donny Lewis had a great chance in front of the net with just 1:24 left but could not beat Cosentino.  Seconds later, hard work by Lancaster and Lewis got the puck free in the corner and sent Herbert in wide open. The Tiger junior came through with a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Cosentino cleanly and tied the game with 1:33 left in the period.  Neither team could score in the remaining time and the game went to overtime.  Both teams had five shots in the final period and thirteen each in regulation.

In the first overtime, Lewis had the best chance  early in the overtime but shot wide.  Late in the period, Lewis tried to set up an open Rohar in front of the  net but his pass just missed.  The NA defense kept Bethel bottled up throughout most of the overtime period sending the game to a second overtime still tied at 1-1.  NA outshot Bethel, 5-3, in the period.

In the second overtime, it was Lewis again who almost got the game winner with 7:31 to play but Cosentino was there to make the save.  Wes Waldschmidt sent a hard drive toward the BP net with 3:57 left, but Cosentino again made the stop.  Spadacene had a chance for the Blackhawks but could not beat Richards with 3:19 left on the clock.  Just when it looked like the game would go to a third OT, Wes Waldschmidt took advantage of a Bethel line change to break down the left side.  Just inside the Blackhawk blue line, the Tiger senior sent a blistering slap shot toward the goal that Cosentino got a glove on but could not keep from sliding into the net.  The Tigers had won their first Penguin Cup Championship with the 2-1 victory.

It was a great team victory for the Tigers.  Richards stopped 19 of 20 shots to earn the victory in net for NA.  The defensive corps of Waldschmidt, senior Brad Schwartzmier, junior Tyson Stupy, and junior Jake Williams combined to keep Bethel's high scoring offense under control throughout most of the contest.  For his overall performance, in addition to scoring the game winner, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Wes Waldschmidt as the Player of the Game (and season!)

The Tigers advanced to the state championship final against Holy Ghost Prep, a 7-3 winner over Cardinal O'Hara at the Philadelphia Spectrum on Sunday afternoon.  Game time is set for Saturday, April 7, at the Ice Works in Aston, PA, just outside Philadelphia.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

TIGERS STOPS LEBO, 2-0, TO ADVANCE
TO PIHL CHAMPIONSHIP

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior Matt Lancaster scored a pair of goals and the Tigers used a stifling defense that held Mt. Lebanon to just nine shots on their way to a 2-0 victory in the PIHL Penguin Cup Class AAA semifinals at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon on Wednesday night.  NA scored in each of the first two periods and held off Lebo in the third to advance to the title contest for the third consecutive year.

The first period gave indications of the outcome as NA held Lebo to just one shot in the entire period.  The Tigers did not have any chances early until junior Josh Herbert got off a good shot at the 9:40 mark that was stopped by Mt. Lebanon junior goalie Rob Behling.  Three minutes later, the Tigers got the all-important first goal when Lancaster slammed in a rebound of a shot by Herbert at the 6:04 mark.  Sophomore Brett Schindler had another chance with 7:50 remaining but was stopped by Behling.  Later in the period, Lebo's Peter Horn was sent off at the 6:03 mark.  NA pressured the Mt. Lebanon goal but could not score on the power play.  Neither team threatened in the remainder of the period as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.  NA outshot Lebo, 10-1, in the stanza.

The Tigers could not score again on an early second period  power play, and the Blue Devils had the first scoring opportunity with 11:25 remaining.  Tiger junior goalie Max Richards stopped Steve Millhouse on a Lebo power play to keep NA on top by a goal.  Two minutes later, senior defenseman Wes Waldschmidt sent Lancaster down the right side into the Mt. Lebanon end.  As Lancaster made his move, the Lebo defenseman fell allowing the Tigers senior to come in all alone on the Mt. Lebanon goal.  Behling got a pad on the shot but it slid over the line for the second NA goal at the 6:04 mark.  Later in the period Mt. Lebanon had scoring chances from Jon Willen and Brooks Behling but Richards again made the saves.  The Tigers came back with additional scoring opportunities by Herbert, sophomore Bo Schwab, and Wes Waldschmidt but Behling was able to keep it a two-goal deficit.  With just 1:05 left, Lebo leading scorer Sean McDermott had his only real chance of the game with a shot from the right side from right along the goal line, but Richards made the stop.  The Tigers took a 2-0 advantage into the final period.  In the second period, NA outshot Lebo, 9-3, and built their shot advantage to 19-4 over the first two periods.

In the third period, the Tigers continued to play tough defense to protect the two-goal lead.  With the exception of a scoring chance in the first minute, Lebo had no real opportunities to get back in the game.  The Blue Devils seemed to have a chance when Stupy was sent off for interference with 8:21 remaining.  Once again, the NA penalty killers did the job, keeping the puck out of the Tiger end.  The Tigers were content to clear the puck and protect the goal for the remainder of the period.  Lebo pulled their goalie with over a minute remaining but could not score.  In the third period, Mt. Lebanon outshot NA, 5-2, but the Tigers took home the 2-0 victory.

It was an impressive team victory for the Tigers against a good defensive team.  The NA defense, led by Wes Waldschmidt, Stupy, senior Brad Schwartzmier and junior Jake Williams never gave the Blue Devils a chance to score.  Richards had to make only nine saves but was tough when he had to be.  For his effort in the offensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Matt Lancaster as the Player of the Game.  The final shot total showed NA outshooting Lebo, 21-9.

With the win, the Tigers improved their record to 18-4-1 on the season.  NA will face top seed Bethel Park (22-0-1) in the final at Mellon Arena on Sunday night. The game will mark the third consecutive NA appearance in the title contest. Early in the year, the Blackhawks dominated the Tigers in a 7-0 victory.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 4:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.

TIGERS TOP CENTRAL, 4-1, TO ADVANCE
TO SEMIFINALS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers defeated Central Catholic, 4-1, at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night in the Penguin Cup Class AAA quarterfinals.  Junior Josh Herbert scored a pair of third period goals and junior goalie Max Richards stopped 20 of 21 shots to pace NA to the victory.  Sophomore Thomas Gillespie and senior Matt Lancaster also scored for the winning Tigers.

Neither team could score in a close checking first period.  Central had a territorial edge but Richards was able to make the key saves to keep the game scoreless.  Early in the period, NA senior captain Dan Gaertner had a chance but his shot was stopped by CC goal Phil Salerno.  Richards made two tough saves two minutes later to stop a Viking threat.  Later in the period, freshman Brady Waldschmidt was stopped by Viking goal John Scalo who replaced Salerno in the nets.  NA junior Bo Schwab was sent off for interference with 2:47 remaining but the Vikings could not scores as the teams went to the first intermission scoreless.

Early in the second period, Central's Andy Hanno was robbed by Richards just 1:04 into the period.  Senior defenseman Wes Waldschmidt raced from coast to coast less than a minute later, but Scalo made the save on his hard shot.  After sophomore Brett Schindler had a chance at the 9:58 mark, the Tigers finally scored when Gillespie tipped in a shot by Herbert from the left circle eleven seconds later.  Wes Waldschmidt picked up the other assist as NA took a 1-0 lead.  Less than minute later with a delayed penalty called on Central, Lancaster scored from in front of the goal to make it a 2-0 game.  Central had two good chances with a little over seven minutes left in the period, but a shot by Michael Kreitz went over the goal and Richards made a good save on Josh Martin.  The Tigers Donny Lewis was sent off twice in the next five minutes to give Central a chance to get back in the game.  After NA killed off the first power play with no serious threats, defenseman Josh Martin hit the post to the right of Richards midway through the penalty.  The Tigers were able to kill off the remainder of the penalty, but Central kept coming.  The hard work paid off when Adrian Scherer slammed home a rebound from in front of the goal with 50 seconds remaining in the period to cut the NA advantage to 2-1.  Gillespie then drew another NA penalty with 32 seconds left, but the Vikings could not score before time ran out.  The Tigers took a 2-1 lead into the final period.

Central opened the third period with a furious power play attack that saw Richards make three saves to keep the one-goal lead.  The junior netminder came up big again at the 12:04 mark when he stopped Scherer's hard shot from the left side.  The NA defense then stepped up and controlled play for the remainder of the game.  Herbert was able to score an insurance goal with 6:19 remaining on a hard wrist shot from the left circle with Schindler earning an assist.  Junior defenseman Tyson Stupy was sent to the box with 5:15 left, but again the NA defense and Richards stopped the Viking power play that went 0 for 4 on the game.  Central pulled the goalie with a minute remaining, and Herbert was able to break free to tap in the final score of the night with 29 seconds on the clock.  The Tigers took home a 4-1 victory on the way to the semifinals.

It was a hard-fought victory for the Tigers against a Central team that did not want to lose for the third time to NA.  A good defensive effort by the Tiger defensemen led by Wes Waldschmidt, Stupy, senior Brad Schwartzmier and junior Jake Williams supported a steady effort in goal by Richards.  For his work in the net, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Max Richards as the Player of the Game.  NA outshot Central, 26-21, for the game.

The win marks the third consecutive year the Tigers have advanced to the PIHL Penguin Cup semifinals.  NA will face Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals. The game will be played at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon next Wednesday with game time set for 8:30 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet.

HERBERT SCORES FOUR TO LEAD TIGERS TO DIVISION TITLE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers shut out Fox Chapel, 8-0, at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Sunday night to clinch the North Division title.  Junior forward Josh Herbert scored four goals and senior defenseman Wes Waldschmidt added two more along with two assists to lead NA to the decisive victory.  Also scoring for the Tigers were sophomore forwards Bo Schwab and Brett Schindler.

Fox Chapel kept the Tigers off the board for most of the first period in spite of a large NA territorial edge.  With defenseman Brian Baum in the box for interference at the 10:32 mark, FC goalie Chris Gizzi had to make two tough saves to keep the game scoreless.  The Tigers finally broke through late in the period with three goals in the final 2:40.  After just failing to send Schwab in alone, Wes Waldschmidt found Herbert open and the Tiger junior beat Gizzi on a breakaway for the all-important first goal.  Less than a minute later, Schwab blasted home the second goal on a good pass from sophomore Thomas Gillespie from behind the goal to put NA up 2-0 with 1:50 remaining.  The Tigers weren't finished as Herbert scored again with senior forward Matt Lancaster setting him up again from behind the goal.  NA took a 3-0 advantage into the first intermission.  The Tigers outshot the Foxes, 11-3, in the opening period.

The late goals seemed to energize the Tigers as they struck for four more tallies early in the second period.  Early in the period, Gizzi was forced to make a tough save on NA junior defenseman Tyson Stupy who got off a strong shot from the right circle. With FC defenseman Jack Stump in the penalty box for tripping, the Tigers made them pay as Wes Waldschmidt scored from right in front of the goal on assists from senior captain Dan Gaertner and sophomore Dylan Rohar to make it a 4-0 game.  The Tigers continued to pressure the Fox Chapel goal and Gizzi stopped Schindler from right in front at the 11:22 mark.  Less than a minute later, Wes skated through the FC defense to score a spectacular goal to extend the margin to 5-0 with 10:56 remaining in the period.  After junior goalie Max Richards made a good save to stop Zach Crowe, NA Coach Jim Black sent in senior Adam Lutty to finish the game in goal at the 956 mark of the second period.   Less than two minutes later, the Tigers scored another power play goal with Herbert scoring his third of the game with Wes Waldschmidt assisting.   Schindler came back to score on a rebound to extend the lead to 7-0 at the 8:07 mark.  Late in the period, Gizzi robbed Schwab from right in front of the FC goal as the Tigers took a commanding 7-0 lead into the final period.

With the clock running under the mercy rule, neither team had many scoring opportunities in the third period.  The Tigers scored the only goal of the period when Herbert's rolling shot got past Gizzi for his fourth of the game to make it 8-0 with 8:54 remaining.  Lutty had to make two good saves with less than five minutes on the clock to preserve the shutout.  The Tigers outshot Fox Chapel, 35-16, on their way to the 8-0 victory.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Josh Herbert as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers completed the regular season with a record of 16-4-1 in PIHL play.  The victory gave NA the North Division title and hopefully a first round bye in the upcoming PIHL playoffs.  The playoff scenario is still not decided because a number of teams still have games to play.  We will post the playoff brackets as soon as they are available.  The North Allegheny Sports Network plans to cover all NA playoff games.

TIGERS CRUSH BALDWIN, 11-2, BEHIND WES WALDSCHMIDT'S EIGHT-POINT NIGHT

Photo Gallery

Senior defenseman Wes Waldschmidt scored four goals and added four assists to lead the Tigers to an 11-2 victory over Baldwin at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Junior Josh Herbert and senior Dan Gaertner added a pair of goals each as NA increased their unbeaten streak to ten.  Senior Matt Lancaster chipped in with a goal and four assists.

The Tigers took control early with five first period goals.  The stage was set when junior Brett Schindler fired the first shot of the game off the goalie's mask.  Sophomore Brady Waldschmidt tipped in a shot by brother Wes to give NA a 1-0 lead just 2:55 into the game.  Thirty seconds later, Gaertner completed a great passing play with assists going to junior defenseman Tyson Stupy and sophomore Bo Schwab.  With Dan Cox sent to the box at the 10:52 mark, sophomore Dylan Rohar made the Highlanders pay when he tipped in Wes Waldschmidt's shot to make it a 3-0 NA lead.  Baldwin almost got on the board when senior captain Nick Posa break in on a breakaway, but senior goalie Adam Lutty made a big pad save to keep the three-goal lead.  With 5:26 remaining, Wes Waldschmidt sent a rising shot over Baldwin goalie Ryan Smith's left shoulder to increase the NA advantage to 4-0.  With 1:20 remaining, Lancaster made a great individual play to steal the puck and beat two Baldwin defenders to give the Tigers a commanding 5-0 lead after one period.

Baldwin came back in the second period to cut the lead to 5-2.  Early in the period, Lutty had to make another good save off a shot by Posa.  Tiger defenseman Brad Schwartzmier was sent off for interference at the 8:14 mark.  Baldwin capitalized when Dan Cox scored on a long screen shot to make it a 5-1 game.  With 4:41 remaining, Steve Powell found a breaking Posa out of the penalty box and her converted to cut the margin to 5-2 after two periods of play.

In the third period, the Tigers exploded for six more goals.  At the 12:06 mark, Lancaster and Herbert combined on a two-man passing play with Herbert scoring to increase the NA lead to 6-2.  A minute and a half later, Rohar was able to set up Gaertner's second goal with a pass from behind the net.   Lancaster set up Herbert at the 9:01 mark for the eighth Tiger goal.  Wes Waldschmidt added three more goals as the Tigers went on to the 11-2 victory.  Lancaster picked up two more assists, one on the second Tiger power play goal of the game.

With the win, the Tigers took over first place in the North Division with a record of 15-4-1.  With Central Catholic being given two forfeit losses, NA now leads Central by three points and can wrap up the division title with a victory on Sunday night against Fox Chapel.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there on Sunday night at Bladerunners in Harmarville as the Tigers close out their regular season against the Foxes.  The pre-game show is scheduled for 7:45 pm with game time set for 8:00 pm.

STUPY'S LATE GOAL GIVES TIGERS A
2-2 TIE WITH MEADVILLE

Photo Gallery

Junior defenseman Tyson Stupy knocked home a rebound of a shot by senior forward Dan Gaertner with just 21 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 2-2 tie with Meadville on Friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  It was Senior Night for NA, but junior Josh Herbert, along with Stupy, scored the Tiger goals.

In the first period, both teams played strong defensively with good play in goal by junior Max Richards of NA and Mike Licinski of Meadville.  The Tigers took the lead late when Herbert stole a clearing pass and scored at the 3:38 to make it a 1-0 NA lead.  Pat Leone answered for the Bulldogs seconds later when scored with 3:15 to go in the period.  The teams went to the first intermission tied at 1-1.

In the second period, the Tigers had three consecutive power plays but could not score.  Penalties at the 11:46, 7:37, and 5:31 marks all gave NA the man advantage.  With neither team scoring in the second stanza, the game remained tied at 1-1 entering the final period.

Early in the third period, Meadville had two scoring chances but Richards stopped by Morgan Nickerson and Alex Drelick to keep the game tied.  Midway through the period, Mike Noonan poked a loose puck past Richards to give Meadville a 2-1 advantage with 7:14 remaining.  The Bulldog defense was able to contain the Tigers until time was running out.  A good outlet pass to Gaertner sent in the Tigers on an odd man break.  Licinski was able to make the save on Gaertner, but Stupy was right there to put the rebound home and time the game with 21 seconds left.

In the overtime period, the Tigers almost won the game when sophomore Donny Lewis had his shot stopped by Licinski.  With neither team able to score, the game went into the books as a 2-2 tie.

With the tie, the NA record in the North Division stands at 14-4-1 with two games remaining.  The Tigers will host Baldwin on Tuesday, February 20, at Bladerunners in Warrendale.   Because of the WPIAL basketball playoffs, the North Allegheny Sports Network will NOT be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet.  We will be at the final game of the regular season on Sunday night when the Tigers travel to Harmarville to meet Fox Chapel.  The pre-game show is scheduled for 7:45 pm with game time to follow at 8:00 pm.

TIGERS DOMINATE CENTRAL AGAIN FOR 5-1 WIN

Photo Gallery

The Tigers defeated Central Catholic, 5-1, on Friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale for their eighth consecutive PIHL victory.  Senior Wes Waldschmidt had a pair of goals for NA as the Tigers broke open a close game with three third period goals.

Neither team was able to score early in the first period, but the Vikings were whistled for a penalty at the 6:42 mark.   Junior Josh Herbert was able to drive home a rebound just eleven seconds into the penalty to give NA a 1-0 advantage.  Central picked up another penalty with 5:13 remaining, and Viking goalie John Scalo had to make a good stop on Wes Waldschmidt to keep the score at 1-0.  The Tigers took the one goal advantage into the second period.

Just 17 seconds into the second period, Wes Waldschmidt came close again but missed the net.  Another Central penalty at 12:53 gave the Tigers another power play but Scalo made several good saves to keep it a 1-0 game.  Once again, the Vikings were called for penalty at the 7:40 mark, and this time the Tigers made them pay.  Wes Waldschmidt scored with just one second left in the penalty to give NA a 2-0 lead.  Less than a minute later, the Vikings had a chance, but NA junior goalie Max Richards made a key save on Doug Dietrich.  Late in the period, the Tigers took a penalty.  Josh Martin set up C.J. Burke for a power play goal that cut the lead to 2-1 with 2:05 remaining in the period.  The Tigers took the one-goal lead into the final period, but the Vikings were back in the game.

Central had a chance to tie the game early in the third period on a power play beginning at the 11:51 mark.  The Tiger penalty killers did a good job of stopping Central and preserving the 2-1 lead.   Shortly after the penalty time expired, the Tigers were able to convert on a 3-on-1 break with sophomore Brady Waldschmidt knocking home a rebound of a Herbert shot.  The goal gave NA a 3-1 lead with 9:26 remaining.  Wes Waldschmidt tallied his second goal of the game after a terrific move in traffic to make it a 4-1 game with 4:34 left.  Sophomore Brett Schindler put the finishing touches on a big NA victory when he scored the final Tiger goal.  The Tigers went on to a convincing 5-1 victory and a sweep of the season series with the Vikings.

With the win, the Tigers improved the North Division record to 14-4-0 as they moved two points ahead of Central and into first place.  NA will host Meadville next Friday night at Bladerunners with game time set for 6:00 pm.

GAERTNER'S LATE GOAL BEATS
UPPER ST. CLAIR, 4-3

Photo Gallery

Senior Danny Gaertner scored with just twenty seconds remaining in the game to give the Tigers a 4-3 victory at Upper St. Clair on Thursday night.  The Panthers had rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game.  NA got goals from sophomore Dylan Rohar, senior Matt Lancaster, and sophomore Donny Lewis as they won their seventh consecutive PIHL contest.

The Tigers took advantage of an early USC penalty when A.J. Moody was sent off for tripping at the 13:21 mark.  Junior Josh Herbert set up Rohar at the blue line and his slap shot beat the Panther goalie to give NA a 1-0 just 18 seconds into the power play.  Later in the period, Gaertner made a nice move around the USC defense but his shot went just wide.  The Tigers had a 5-on-3 opportunity at the 5:00 minute mark but could not score.  The Panthers had a chance to tie the game late in the period but a diving defensive play by junior defenseman Tyson Stupy knocked the puck away.  NA took a 1-0 advantage into the second period.

Early in the second period, the Tigers came close to opening a two-goal lead again when sophomore Bo Schwab stole the puck away from the Panther goalie who was out of the goal but was unable to score into the open net.  The Tigers did score the game's second goal on another power play with Lancaster putting a rebound in the net with assists going to senior Wes Waldschmidt and Rohar.  The Panthers scored on their own power play twenty-three seconds later when Donald Pegnataro beat NA junior goalie Max Richards with a long shot from the blue line.  Thirty seconds later, the Tigers answered when Lewis went high over the USC goalie to make it a 3-1 NA lead with 3:29 remaining.  The Tigers took a two-goal lead into the final period.

The Panthers turned up the physical play in the third period and it paid off in two goals late in the period.  USC Captain Jonathan Lohman broke free to score with 2:35 remaining.  Just eight seconds later, Lohman set up Trevor Yealy who tied the game at 3-3.  The teams exchanged penalties down the stretch, and it looked like the game would go to overtime.  With seconds remaining, Rohar knocked down a Panther clearing pass with the puck sliding right to Gaertner who scored the game winner with 20 seconds left.

The Tigers dominated play, outshooting the Panthers, 35-14.  With the win, the Tigers improved their North Division record to 13-4-0 and good for first place by two points over Central Catholic.  NA will host Central next Friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale in a key division contest.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.

TIGERS POUND SENECA VALLEY,
7-4, FOR SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior Wes Waldschmidt scored two goals and added four assists to lead the Tigers to a 7-4 victory over Seneca Valley at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Friday night.  NA also got goals from senior Brad Schwartzmier, sophomore Brady Waldschmidt, sophomore Bo Schwab, senior Matt Lancaster and sophomore Dylan Rohar as they won their sixth consecutive PIHL contest.

The Tigers wasted little time in taking the lead.  After Matt Jarrrett was sent off for slashing at the 37 second mark, Wes Waldschmidt skated through the Seneca team to score the power play goal and give NA a 1-0 lead just 1:03 into the contest.  The Raiders came back to tie the game on a long shot from the blue line by Ryan Dowd just a little under three minutes later.  With 8:40 left, Seneca had a chance to take the lead when Jarrett set up Andrew Tang but his shot went wide.  Wes Waldschmidt had two chances in a ten second span with 5:00 minutes left, but his shots also went wide of the goal.  Sophomore forward Thomas Gillespie was stopped by SV goalie Nick Miller from in front of the net with 4:01 remaining.  NA finally took the lead back on Schwartzmier's first goal of the season, a high shot from the right point that Miller got a piece of but could not keep out of the net.  The power play goal came with 1:22 remaining in the period.  Senior goalie Adam Lutty made a good save on Jarrett with 25 seconds left as the Tigers took a 2-1 advantage into the second period.

Once again, the Tigers scored quickly in the second period with Brady Waldschmidt scoring on assists from brother Wes and Schwartzmier.  The goal came at the 1:03 mark of the period, the same time as the first goal of the game in the first period.  Seneca Valley came back quickly to cut the lead to 3-2 when Tang scored on an assist from Jarrett just 16 seconds later.  Wes Waldschmidt set up Brady at the 12:28 mark but Miller robbed him from point blank range to keep the game at 3-2.  With Tyler Mesisca in the box for cross-checking, the Tigers broke in on a 3-on-1 on the power play with Wes Waldschmidt setting up Schwab as the Tiger lead went to 4-2.  Two minutes later, Lutty stopped Nick Jones, but Jones came back seconds later to beat Lutty with a shot from 20 feet out to cut the margin to 4-3.  Coach Jim Black made a change in goal with junior Max Richards coming in for the Tigers.  Less than a minute later, Wes Waldschmidt sent Lancaster in on a breakaway and the NA senior cleanly beat Miller to give NA a 5-3 advantage.  The Tigers had to kill off a late penalty but took the two-goal lead into the final period.

Early in the third period, the Tigers had to kill off another penalty.  Later, on a delayed penalty, Wes Waldschmidt scored his second goal at the 10:18 mark to give NA a 6-3 advantage.  Seneca had a chance to cut into the lead but Richards stopped Jones at the 9:39 mark.  The Raiders were able to score a minute later on a two-on-one break with Mesisca setting up Brandon Platt for the goal that cut the lead to 6-4.  At this point, the physical play picked up.  Nine penalties were called in the last 8:14 of the game with both teams enjoying power plays.  With the teams playing four each, Rohar got loose on a breakaway and scored to give NA a 7-4 lead with 7:36 remaining.  Rohar had another chance at the 6:48 mark but his shot went wide.  The Tigers had one final opportunity but Miller stopped senior Danny Gaertner's breakaway attempt with just 1:14 left.  NA held off the Raiders for the remainder of the contest to pick up a 7-4 victory.

It was another good win for the Tigers against a neighborhood rival.  Seneca Valley continued to stay close, but could never catch the Tigers.  The physical play near the end of the game resulted in some frustration on the part of the Raiders who took several roughing and misconduct penalties.  For his efforts particularly on defense the North Allegheny Sports Network named Brad Schwartzmier as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the NA record in PIHL play improved to 12-4-0 keeping them in first place in the North Division by two points over Central Catholic.  The Tigers will travel to Upper St. Clair on Thursday night to meet the Panthers in an 8:00 pm contest.

TIGERS FINISH OFF FOX CHAPEL, 4-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior Wes Waldschmidt and sophomore Donny Lewis scored two goals each to lead the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over Fox Chapel at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  The win was the fourth straight for NA as they took a two-point lead over Central Catholic in the North Division.

Fox Chapel opened the game with strong pressure in the North Allegheny end, but NA junior goalie Max Richards and the Tiger defense kept the Foxes off the board.  On the first real NA scoring threat, Lewis sent a pass from behind the FC goal that bounced off the Foxes' goalie Chris Gizzi into the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 11:35 mark.  Later in the period, Richards came up big when he stopped Jake Grumski on a breakaway.  Tiger junior defenseman Jake Williams was called for a penalty on the play, but NA killed it off.  The Tigers got the best scoring chance during the penalty when sophomore Dylan Rohar stole the puck and got off a good shot but Gizzi made the save.  Later in the period, the Tigers had a power play chance but could not score.  With thirty seconds remaining, sophomore forward Brett Schindler had another good opportunity but Gizzi again made the save.  Although being outshot, 14-6, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the second period.

Early in the second period, senior forward Matt Lancaster got loose down the right side but his shot was stopped by Gizzi.  Seconds later at the other end, Richards was forced to make a good save on FC all-star forward Jack Stump.  The Foxes turned up the pressure beginning at the 13:30 mark, and Richards came up big making four saves during the FC attack.  The Tigers regrouped, however, and pressured the FC goal with Rohar coming close with 11:30 remaining, but Gizzi kept NA from scoring.  With 5:25 left in the period, Justin Kreps sent a hard shot from the blue line that Richards stopped.  The Tigers broke through less than a minute later.  Sophomore Brady Waldschmidt came out from behind the net and tried to tuck the puck in behind Gizzi who made the save.  Lewis pounced on the rebound and scored his second goal to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead with 4:41 remaining in the period.  Stump had another good chance with 2:34 left but Richards denied him again.  The Tigers took a 2-0 advantage in the final period.

The Tigers came out strong defensively early in the third period keeping Fox Chapel out of the NA zone.  Neither team had a good scoring chance in the first five minutes.  Midway through the period, Wes Waldschmidt took the puck behind his own net, skated the length of the ice, and beat Gizzi with a hard shot to put the Tigers up 3-0 with 8:52 remaining.  After only two penalties were called until late in the third period, the physical play picked up.  After freshman defenseman Tyler Wright was sent off for tripping, Zach Crowe took advantage of a friendly bounce on an NA clearing pass to score a power play goal at the 5:21 mark.  The Foxes' Greg Lorenz and NA's Bo Schwab were sent off for roughing with 3:06 remaining.  Stump then picked up a hooking penalty with just 2:30 left.  Wes Waldschmidt put the game out of reach when he scored his second goal of the game on the power play on assists from Lancaster and Richards with 1:00 on the third period clock.  Neither team scored in the remaining minute and the Tigers took home an important 4-1 division victory.

It was another good team victory for the Tigers who were playing without several key players who were out with injuries.  For his efforts both offensively and defensively, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Wes Waldschmidt as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 11-4 on the year.  NA will meet Seneca Valley on Friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:50 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

TIGERS BLANK NORWIN, 7-0, FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

Photo Gallery

Senior goalie Adam Lutty stopped all 20 Norwin shots as the Tigers shut out the Knights, 7-0, at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Sophomore Dylan Rohar led the way with two goals and an assist while senior Wes Waldschmidt added a goal and two assists.

The Tigers took control of the game from the outset scoring three goals in the first 4:51 of the contest.  Lutty earned an assist on the games' first goal with Wes Waldschmidt giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 56 seconds into the game.  Wes set up sophomore and brother Brady for the second goal at the 1:58 mark.  The sophomore line of Donny Lewis, Brett Schindler, and Brady Waldschmidt struck for goal number three when Lewis scored with the assist going to Schindler with 10:09 remaining in the period.  The Tigers added a fourth goal in the final minute of the period when senior Danny Gaertner bounced in a rebound that came off the goalie's pads with assists going to Rohar and junior Brian Sharlow.  The Tigers took a commanding 4-0 lead into the second period.

Early in the second period, freshman Adam Jacob stopped a Norwin scoring chance but picked up a penalty on the play.  On the penalty kill, Rohar stole the puck and skated in alone to score a shorthanded goal that pushed the margin to 5-0 at the 13:05 mark.  Norwin was called for a late penalty and the Tigers made them pay again.  Wes Waldschmidt picked up his second assist of the game as he set up Rohar for his second goal of the contest, a power play goal with 42 seconds remaining in the period.  The Tigers led, 6-0, after two periods of play.

In the third period, the Tigers had to kill off an early penalty.  Senior Matt Lancaster had the best scoring chance when his wrister just missed the goal with NA shorthanded.  Lutty was able to stop a two-on-one Norwin break right after the penalty expired to keep the shutout in tact.  The Tigers added a final goal with just 24 seconds left in the game when Lewis set up Schindler who sent a quick shot past the Norwin goalie. The Tigers outshot the Knights, 38-20, in posting their second straight 7-0 victory.

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 10-4 on the season.  NA will host division rival Fox Chapel on Tuesday night at Bladerunners.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:20 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 6:30 pm in Warrendale.

PLUM FALLS TO TIGERS, 7-0,  AS
PIHL PLAY RESUMES

Photo Gallery

The Tigers traveled to the Center Ice Arena in Delmont  on Friday night and blanked the Plum Mustangs, 7-0.  Junior Josh Herbert scored twice and recorded three assists to pace NA while senior Matt Lancaster added a pair of goals.

The Tigers took advantage of an early Plum penalty just 33 seconds into the game.  Herbert got his first goal on assists from junior Corey Sheran and senior Wes Waldschmidt to give NA a 1-0 lead on the power play.  The Tigers almost made it 2-0 on another power play two minutes later.  Sophomore Dylan Rohar sent a centering pass to sophomore Donny Lewis from behind the net, but the shot went just wide of the right post.  NA did get the second goal of the period on a slap shot from the blue line by Sheran that beat the Mustang goalie with 4:36 remaining.  The Mustangs came close to scoring late in the period, but junior goalie Max Richards made a tough save as the Tigers held a 2-0 advantage after one period.

In the second period, the Tigers kept the pressure on the Plum defense.  Rohar had a chance on a good passing play from senior Danny Gaertner midway through the period, but his shot was blocked by a Plum defenseman.  At 6:37, Sheran was sent off for tripping.  The Tigers were the team that scored, however, with Lancaster scoring the shorthanded goal on assists from Herbert and sophomore Matt Gordon.  Herbert's second goal of the game gave NA a 4-0 lead with just 1:21 remaining in the period  Senior Mike Peterson and Wes Waldschmidt earned the assists as the Tigers took the commanding four-goal lead into the final period.

The Tigers scored three more goals in the third period.  Wes Waldschmidt made it 5-0 at the 12:25 mark when he skated around the Mustang goal and scored with a wrister from the high slot.  Sophomores Brady Waldschmidt and Lewis picked up assists on the goal.  With 6:13 left in the game, Lancaster put in his own rebound to increase the margin to 6-0.  Herbert recorded his third assist of the game on the goal.  Gaertner put the finishing touches on the 7-0 victory with a breakaway goal with 4:44 remaining on the third period clock with Rohar and sophomore Bo Schwab assisting.  The Tigers dominated play as they outshot Plum, 24-8, for the game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 9-4 on the season.  NA will host Norwin on Tuesday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale with game time set for 6:30 pm.
